Who would be our rival team for us o have our own 'derby'?

Maybe Perth, and it could be called the 'Longest Derby' considering the longest trip made by any two teams to play each other in a competition in the world would have to be Perth vs Wellington

Um no. Phoenix cannot have a derby unless there's another wellington team.... that's whata derby is. The A-league doesn't have the tight geographic spread necessary for derby matches. ..  sorry.

No derby,

1. there is no team in WEL nor whole NZ.
2. most importantly no aus team is as good as the Nix

In the first 2 seasons I always regarded Perth as our 'derby' matches...

Not so much anymore.

None in the A-League.

Perth if I had to pick, just for the novelty.

Ahhhh the 'wooden spoon' derby. So glad we seem to have moved past that one.

I kind of like the concept of Perth as our "local Derby". Has a tongue-in-cheek-ness consistent with our great club (we do sing about the wind, rain & the Phoenix in the same breath). Needs a wee tag - global derby?

I know, I know, its serious!

They're all grudge matches cos we're playing Australians.

Grudge match does not equal Derby match.

Ah, yet another of these topics that comes up once a year.

There can be no derby, but we really do seem to hate GCU and Newcastle (though not as much since JG has gone).

Has been discussed before (and on the podcast if I remember rightly), but there is apparently a match in Russia where the two teams are further apart.

IIRC relegation has changed that.

I'd say for this season at least it's GCU cos they stole Smeltz and Porter.

In the past for me at least it's been the Roar, I fu$king hate the roar.

Are you trying to tell me that the 'Queensland Derby' last week between two teams 1000km apart wasn't actually a derby?!

Yeah, though it might be a bit of a purist's derby.  Don't think many fans are really going to be screaming for the Zoo to knock about the young 'Nix or pinning their hopes on the kids winning the NZFC.

Just change the word Derby to rivalry and you can hate whoever you want.

A-league commentators keep trying to force Derby's upon everyone. (F3 etc)

A derby cannot be a Derby without some history, you also need a bit of controversy somewhere in history to heat it up that extra couple of notches.

Indeed - it was St Petersburg v Vladivostock. 'stock were relegated last year.

From Wiki

Situated in the far east of the country, their location poses a significant problem for away teams:9 hours by flight from Moscow. When playing FC Zenit Saint Petersburg at home, a trio of Zenit fans (Evgeny Stepanov, Aleksandr Zaraysky and Veronika Davidova) drove 15,000km across the country only for their car to break down when in Vladivostok, leaving them unable to drive home. These fans thus took the Trans-Siberian Railway back to Saint Petersburg, upon which the club rewarded them with a new car on October 1, 2006. In addition to this, Igor Akinfeev, the CSKA Moscow goalkeeper, said that "they should play in the Japanese League", after his team lost 4-0 after a seven hour flight.[1]

When Hibs, went up, to win the Scottish Cup - I wisnae there - furfuxake!

Good point. derbie's occur naturally, and evolve over time.

If/when there's another New Zealand team in the league (Christchurch?) - then that would be regarded as a New Zealand derby. I'm sure it would create significant interest - even though it wouldn't really be a local derby as we think of them overseas.
