And I don't see why we wouldn't get it.  When you look at the financial problems that have beset almost every other club at some stage, ownership changes, unusual funding arrangements (ANZ stadium owns part of the new West Sydney team WTF??) we are definitely one of the most stable teams in the league.  Obviously there are some issues that need to be sorted but surely there is no reason why we shouldn't be rewarded for a strong contribution to the competition.

For one, it would sure up Terry's substantial investment.  It would mean that if, and there is no suggestion that he wants to, he decided to sell the club for any reason he could do so knowing that a long term licence was in place.  He's invested a great amoutn of his own money in the face of some reasonably substantial hurdles and the FFA should recognise that

Mike Cockerill wrote a good article in the SMH pre-sydney game saying that the FFA should end our uncertainty and give us a licence, basically that they need to look after their own first before pandering to the AFC.

If we don't get support from the FFA I'd see it as the biggest betrayal by Australia ever, I'd suggest cutting off diplomatic relations

We're normally pretty friendly, so he either didn't clearly articulate his message or caught us on a bad day.

i can't see a reason why not but I could see it only getting renewed for 3 or 4 maybe? playwithFire2009-09-25 00:00:48

There are some really stupid arguments on that thread made against us.  This idea that by including the Phoenix the FFA is helping NZ football and somehow that is a bad thing is ridiculous.  The money comes from Terry, they can't get their own bids and franchises in order, and here's a well run franchise that's helping to keep the competition frsh and dvierse.  It's fairlly odd...

I like the "theyre from New zealand so we should get rid of them. Its an Australian league, put canberra in there" (so they can go under with no crowd support or stable financial backer).

Most of the negative posts on there have no opinions as to why stated, they just simply say "get rid of the NZ team, because i dont like it". i suddenly appreciate this forum a whole lot more.

Prior to a fortnight or so ago we were a bastion in a sea of stoopid (as are Sydney and a limited number of others) but this place has had a bad couple of weekks.

The numbers are decreasing though, once upon a time that thread would have been two or three supporting and the rest against, but I think the number of supporters using the internet has increased and is a much broader cross-section of genuien Aus feel.

It seems to get a similar reaction on the Sydney boards, almost unanimously positive and a couple of dissenting voices.

I think from an australian point of view there are a couple of reasons to get rid of us (not one's that I support) but no-one on there is smart enough to articulate them!

If the Phoenix don't get their licence extended I'll be furious.  One of the more professionally run football teams.

I'd seriously consider going on a hunger strike to bring attention to the cause like the Irish did in the 20's and 80's.  Mind you, I probably wouldn't be taken too seriously as I'm a fat bastard.

Our club is acknowledged as being very well organised and run. It's also known to be very professional in its dealings with other A League clubs and the FFA. The support numbers whilst lower than season one are also consistant and higher than some other clubs. Our financial base is solid and dependable. If Australian clubs are helping NZ players getting better then so be it. Perhaps in our own way, we are helping some Australian players improved too.

Terry's recent interview was a positive and refreshing outlook on the A League and the position of the Phoenix towards it.

Good to see increasing support for the Nix remaining in the A-League from the 442 forum..may the trend continue. The most well reasoned posts in that thread were some of ours.. imo.
Lets hope the FFA get behind the Nix and confirm soon, with a decent renewal period.

we'll get it renewed, won't be 10yrs but at least 3yrs. if they don't it'd be ludicrous.

I don't see any reason for not extending it by 10 years. Obviously we have the funding and infrastructure in place to justify applying for a 10 year extension, so why wouldnt they grant it? Quite frankly I think the FFA would be pleased we have our house in order and they can go back to wetting themselves over their western Sydney lovechild.

Agreed UberGunner, 10 years would be the go for the Nix.
Especially important....There may also be opportunities to attract longer term, significant marketing and sponsorship, with potential sponsors knowing the Nix have a future in the A-League and their sponsorship investment can be sustained, built upon and have ongoing opportunity for return on that investment.

10 years would be good to allow Terry and co to grow the club over a number of years knowing they have a good timeframe to get plans in operation and get a reserve team up and running and continue to develop the local NZ talent.  Fingers and toes all crossed!

Do think a second NZ team (Christchurch maybe?) would be a good call in a few years time whenever the league next expands, would be good to have a proper local derby game at last

I think Christchurch as a market would back it, but the problem would be finding a 'Terry' willing to chuck away a million bucks a year on it.

A good test will be to see how big a crowd the Nix get in the Christchurch game I guess.

I'm sure there are people/organisations that could afford it and we could name them but none of them have ever indicated an interest in doing so, so it would seem pointless to fill this thread which is about our future.

From a purely selfish point of view I don't want CHCH to get a team.

I couldn't support them and Wellington because they'd hate each other.

I would feel like a traitor if I stopped supporting the 'nix.

I'd feel dirty if I didn't support the Canterbury team.

It would be sh*t either way.

on the contrary,id hope a CHCH team to do well and would probably support them also. Id want them to do well, but not quite as well as the nix

The derby would of course be massive, and would draw decent crowds, and id imagine many people (myself included) would make the trip down to CHCH to see the nix play them.

All the A League teams have been hanging out till this point in time when Media negotiations are about to be openned. I think every A League club is looking at a 10 year licence.

Did the new teams this year get a long licence or are they having to negotiate a 10 year one already?

Would be good for the stability and growth of the whole league if all teams had longer licencing agreements in place.

and on another note, after a rough(ish) year last season, this season we are proving to be competitive and on the way up. What I can see, if this continues is success in some sort of form. The playoffs will come, we will be successful in whatever way you want to measure it and at some stage we can win this damn thing.
The longer we have in this comp the better we will be. We are only a player or two from cracking this comp wide open now and in year 3. That is some wild achievement in itself, despite what the doom merchants believe in other threads.

No doubt the threat of being tossed out by Bin Laden because of the Asian confederation has died?

I'm glad you're so optimistic, but the reality is, this is a very even league. Apart from gold coast, no team is 'cracking the comp wide open" at the moment.

I suppose cracking it open is optimistic, but we could well be with the leaders if we had a couple more goals. By cracking it open I mean being succesful and shutting up the doomsayers who blame everything on what is happening right now, which is fairly positive, and can't see the big picture

CCM 3 - 0 GCU.

Jets 1 - 0 GCU.

Gold Coast are serious championship contenders, yes. But they are also just as beatable as everyone else. I don't think that anyone is 'cracking the comp wide open.'

Makes for a great league.

I think from an australian perspective a lot of the benefits of having the Phoenix would perhaps be undone by having an additional NZ team
