Im not sure TableManners is saying he expects Brown to try and play a different way or that Herbert is a silly coach, rather its an observation about the way we do play, the style of players we happen to have and a personal view that its not an ideal model for kids to learn from.

Agreed in otal. Was just stressing the point we have to play the hand dealt. and while it may not be an "ideal model" it is the very best model we have ever had in NZ and would far rather this model than no model.

I thought the commentary team flattered us by complimenting our direct approach. While I want results first and foremost the style of football Ricki's team's play is pretty average. What sums it up for me is this (and watch in next time we play).

We when kick off watch Brown take the ball and pass it to Lochhead. Then watch how he does not offer a return option but just turns his back and heads up field to wait for scraps behind long balls pumped to the front men. This sums up Ricki's style - it relies on having a defence and a front line 50 meteres apart with very fit non ball playing midfielders to break up the opposition play.

That may be so for the All Whites, but the Phoenix have a larger player base to find a player that suites the way Ricki may want to play.

Brown for me typifies everything that has held NZ football back in the last 20 years. As much as I like the guy (he really is a great spokesman and not an arrogant player at all) I think watching the Nix is not what I want the youngers trying to copy.

Whatdo you guys think??

It may be as you say what has held NZ foottball back for twenty years but I disagree. You can not expect players who have been brought up on a diet of kick and rush football to suddenly turn into Lionel Messi at the drop of a hat. Personally I think Ricki does very well in adapting sysems to suit the resources at his disposal. We would all like to be able to play like spain, but reality is we can not and will not be able to as long as Junior football is the way it is. The issue starts at six years old not when they get to the age of a senior player in a professional football team.

Funny that I mentioned this a couple of seasons ago and apart from the odd comment agreeing, most were quite disagreeable.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

snth jeff.. I think we all agree that the issue starts at 6 and now that football is much more visible than it ever has been it throws up a couple of questions for me.

1. The Nix are the shop window for kiwi kids.. what do we want them watching? a) the Nix playing a direct style that is probably more focused on not losing more than winning; or b) the Nix trying to play possession football like the teams the win Champions Leagues and World Cups albeit that they will not do it as well as those teams. In the short term they may lose more games than they win playing option b) but will this not help the game here in NZ? Is that even the purpose of the Nix?

2. On that last question we often wonder why players like Clapham aren't signed or why Brockie etc are playing in Australia while we are signing young Australians. I would love to read the Vision and/or Mission of the Nix and what their strategic intent is? If NZ Football are going to have to put money in to save the club (as rumours have it) will these change? Will we see more players like Clapham signed?

Don't get me wrong in that players like Ifil and Durante bring so much to the club but players like Hearfield, Lia, Macallister, Ferrante (RIP) are not in that same category...
