I thought Hearfield was a lot better last night - I can remember him taking on and beating players in the final third a few times and some of his long passes over the top were inch perfect. I don't remember any major blues defensively either.

Sure some of his crosses were average but, as a team, we are appalling at crosses.

I do remember about a 10 minute spell when things didn't go so well - passing / beating players but that would be true for just about everyone last night.

I'd have no problem starting him at RB next week.

Funny how a number of people can watch the same game and see things so differently.

Ward - my man of the match.
Bertos looked better - at least seemed interested but his crossing is generally poor.
Lochead played well and only had a few errors.
Hearfield was significantly better than before and close to last year's form.
Manny - that has to be his position and he has to be kept there surely?
Ifill - anyone else notice that a couple of times he chose to go inside [and had his shot/pass blocked] rather than go outside to his left where he had an open shot at goal?
Greeny - he does do a lot of work but I want my strikers to score goals, Those 2 vs GCU were the type we hired him to score. Those alone give me confidence in him this year.
Siggy and Durante - solid and dependable as usual.
Brown - looked OK
New Goalie - OK
Pav - didn't see enough to make an impression on me.

Edit: Just a note on Siggy: To my mind Siggy is playing A League because he is a grafter; he doesn't have the silky skills of many at this level but he fights for everything he gets. Sometimes he doesn't quite do it right but he will never let you down through lack of effort or determination. That is why guys like him are crowd favourites and they deserve to be. Siggy's history exactly depicts what he is and where he is today.
I could have sworn I wrote what you wote. Agree with everything apart from Vukovic. I would have rather had Gouldy out there last night.

I cannot recall those, but what I do remember are long kicks up field to absolutely nobody. I thought he played a very unintelligent game, but he wasnt the only one, our midfield & defence were caught out of position so many times it was embarrassing.

I thought he looked a lot better when Danning came on and he had someone trying to keep the ball and run at him.  Before that when they were looking to pass around him, he looked more flakey.

Hearfield isn't in form with ball at feet, but you kinda feel things might click soon...Had a nice overlapping move with ifill that coulda set something up if someone had been on the end of the cross...but a lot of waste in between that...

think he has more to offer than he has shown so far

If people want Greenie to start scoring then perhaps the rest of the team should set up some chances for him? he was very tidy, hardworking, and held the ball up excellently well, and thats not counting the assist for the winner.

Lochead and hearfield's delivery was route one and drastically lacking quality. If you're unsure lay it into Ward dont just lamp it up field.

Thoroughly inmpressed by Mr Ward last night, perhaps the missing link between midfield and attack that Ricki has been trying to find for 2 years now!  Robust enough to ride the challenges and skillfull enough and enough confidince to play the ball well, as good a first start as you could ask for and will hopefully get better.

Muscat, glad to have you back Manny, added that something missing to the midfield and protected his defence well and passed it nicely and added some much needed energy.

Greenie worked his bloody socks off up front.

Troy and Leo, perhaps our least effective players, Troy has to learn the basics of playing RB if we are to keep him there and Leo needs to start taking on people again and work on his pretty woefull crossing.

Sydney not the side they were last year, but was glad to get the points I think we deserved.

This, and also needs to stop dropping like he has been shot think he was lucky to just get away with a warning at one stage.

I think Hearfield is an adequate enough backup RB but that is probably it. Think he should be guaranteed a spot on the bench pretty much. Excellent versatility which is what we need on 3 man bench. Two strikers is not intelligient.

You've got to be joking (or have a predetermined view).
Lochy was very good tonight (well, at least OK). I was with a committed Lochy-knocker tonight who even admitted he played very well.

I'm traditionally not a fan of Lochy, admit that was an improvement. Hearfield was disappointing. Seems to be trying to play himself into form, but unfortunately it resulted possession being given away needlessly via aimless passes too often. Others were guilty too - but he was the worst.

Good tocues from Greenie - showed his class a couple of times with lay offs. Good performance from Ward and Manny played well again. I'd have liked to see Bertos brought off instead of Greenie for Pav.

I reckon Siggy in at right back, North into the centre back spot and Hearfield back on the bench as utility man.

Siggy RB, no.

You'd be daft to put North at CB and Siggy at RB, if anything North at RB and Siggy at CB.

Thanks people for getting in to the ratings.
My ratings would have
Vukovic 5.5 Dodgy moments, but hopefully his combinations with defence would only get better
Troy 5.5 Defended a lot better, great runs down the wing, let down by awful crosses. Why doesn't he take the ball right to the line, he's fast enough to do it and then there'd be more people in the box.
Siggy 6.5 Sound
Dura 7.5 A really good game
Lochie 6 Defended well, crosses not as bad as Troy's but, well...
Manny 6.5 A really tidy job of keeping pressure on their midfield
Timmy 5.5 Worked hard, shame he didn't bury that header, what a difference 3 cm makes
Ward 8.5 Terrific performance and a memorable goal
Ifill 6 Average, which for him is still quite good
Greenie 6 Fantastic holding the ball up, nice pass to set up Ward, did he have a shot?
Leo 6 Average, did well enough
Pavlov 5 worked hard, few chances

I see I'm more generous than some!

i frighteningly agree with whooo

Hearfield was arse. his passing and his crossing was absolutely terrible. his performance was as bad as anything we saw from Mulligan.

We never saw Mulligan...

Indeed. I thought Bertos was crap last night. His final ball was utterly woeful and all the good work done before counts for nothing if you can't cross a ball.

Agree on the diving too, absolutely embarrassing.

Lets give bertos a run at RB. He has shown with his performances with the AWs that he is capable of assuming defensive responsibilities, plus has the speed and athleticism.
And maybe he will be more dangerous overlapping.
I dont think it would be a huge adjustment shifting from a defensive wide midfielder (as per AWs)  with 3 at the back to an out and out full back

Disappointing to see so much long ball from us.

I think I prefer watching Adelaide or Brisbane at the moment, at least they keep the ball on the ground ...

No, I think he could be cultured into a v good RB.

Nobody thought he could defend until 6 months ago, and he proved for the AWs he bloody well can. Next step is to complete the transformation into a full back, obviously with a mandate to get forward when possible.

He's a better, smarter footballer than Hearfield - and Hearfield had never played RB until last year.

There is a big difference between occasionally being able to defend playing as a RM, and playing as a full back and defending most of the game.

There is also a big difference bw playing as an attacking winger and playing as a wide player in 343 when you are under the kosh for 90 minutes, and he made that adjustment fine.

I genuinely think he has the discipline and attributes to play there, definitely more so than Party ATT.

apart from Manny that seems to have been our criteria for selecting right backs since Oldy strode forth in season one

If Leo defended half as doggedly as Marius has defended his argument he'd be brilliant.

Considering Leo's duties at international level recently have been mostly defensive (pretty adequately too IMO) it's not such a ridiculous idea, but I wouldn't really want to see him back there.

Lets be honest - it's no less ridiculous than Hearfield, a naturally attacking midfielder, playing right back. valeo2010-09-12 22:37:09

Yes please. Then Daniel assumes the left midfield role.

In a word: impotent.

My MOTM would be Ward closely followed by Durante.

Have to agree, in the first half Hearfield and Bertos had many chances to get crosses in but failed to deliver or hit it straight into defenders.

Liked midfield with Muscat and Ward. Ifill improved on last couple of efforts but still a bit to go.
I find myself wanting to go down to the pitch and shake the hell out of Leo at times. He does some very nice things but either seems reluctant to make a positive run forward either with or without the ball. His ability to cross a ball fron either a dead ball situation or from open play is so variable, ie it so often gets drilled at an oposition player standing right in front of him or is some horrible loopy thing that gives our attackers no chance, and dont start me on the fact he seems to think he is the man when it comes to taking freekicks. He has scored one against Perth last year Courtesy of a deflection, but aside from that not a thing, rarely even hits the target.

Ward was fantastic but i thought Muscat was inspirational, he puicked up so much ball and after getting off the plane less than 24 hpurs earlier, makes him my man of the match

assume yr talking about Leo

1 memorable goal from a free-kick

not sure if that makes him unbeatable as a free-kick taker

and he wastes a few these days trying to repeat that memorable goal

perhaps I'm being a bit harsh but Daniel can put the ball into good spots,

I wonder why Iffy doesn't take more free-kicks??

will Ward be worth a go??

Don't you think he should be told not to have these attempted shots on goal? if he doesn't listen, don't let him take the bloody kicks in the 1st place.  I'm sorry but this sort of inaction from the coaching staff worries me some times. I'm not an A League coach [you might have guessed] but why are some of these things not addressed and put right?

If bertos is the best we've got at taking corners, freekicks and any other kick which he appears to get to take by default then god help us..his free kicks are dire. he has one free kich where he scored a goal at distance and I believe that one was a deflection. His corners are dire at best....give some one else a go

I'd rate Daniel as a better corner taker. But he's hardly on the field. As for his freekicks, I only ever remember seeing them hit the wall.
