Manny and Leo easly the best players for us I think.

Don't think Ifill was great, to be honest.

Troy was probably the only disappointing one for us.

those are quite reasonable Oi Oi

thought Lia was average. main contribution was to foul. on the other hand brown had a good game i thought turning over possession and generally tidy when he had the ball.

Dura was excellent, with manny, leo

Observations;
Manny easily our best player - read game very well and distributed well.
Pavlovic impressed
Daniel and Leo both looked confident on the ball
McAlistair looks awkward and gangly but actually has a good first touch - he's prepared to mix it and could scramble his fair share of goals
Durante picked up where he left off last year
Sigmund looked a bit sluggish - maybe needs more game time to get up to race pace
Lia needs to learn how to keep his temper under control - we don't need another season of Lia's unnecessary yellow cards
Toto - very nice touch - obviously tried hard to make an impression - could go either way (very good or Diego 2) - need more time to tell

Overall it was an impressive hit out - the team played well and thoroughly deserved the win.

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

Yeah Muscat is often the unsung hero as I have said earlier this month. Durante was solid, Leo was dangerous, and Daniel proving a very effective sub again. This Shuker guy had little time on the ball, but did show the intent to attack. I think he will be a ggod caceres replacement. And looks like he will cross more too.

Striker wise, McCallister was good and Greenacre proved his worth witha fair few decent passes and great work ethic. Looks a great partnership forming. Pavlovich looked good, perhaps some poor decisions but could do a job, just need to see on his finishing.

Now toto, I was happy with his performance. He arrived only yesterday off the plane, cant speak English, yet seemed to fit in nicely. Sure he had a few poor touches, but he has that direct attacking intent that we have lacked in the past two seasons. He looks like he will take on his man, but also make those dangerous passes. He was on trial and did look he tried overly hard to impress, but i think he will be a good pickup for us. And seems to link well with Daniel, which is reminiscent of a certain south American link up of season uno.

If we play 4.4.2 with Lochy back, I could see Manny slotting comfortably back at right fullback ahead of Hearfield.

Very happy with that performance.

Paston - 6 - had nothing to do really.
Muscat - 8 - was quality all night.
Hearfield - 6 - some very wayward passing and crossing but was still somewhat comfortable.
Durante - 8 - controlled defence, played really well, deserved a goal and couldn't have been more unlucky to score an own goal.
Sigmund - 7 - fairly solid.
Brown - 7 - played well, passed well, got stuck in.
Ifill - 7 - was good.
Lia - 7 solid as.  Nearly started a few riots.
MacAllister - 7 - well taken goal.
Bertos - 7.5 - very impressed, played well, beat his man and tried to deliver the ball in.  Played a good role in the first goal.
Greenacre - 6.5 - ran hard but not a lot went his way.

Daniel - 5 - didn't notice a lot from him.
Pavlovic - 5.5 - seemed OK.
Toto - 6 - Got involved in play and I liked the look of him.  Will be even better when he can properly communicate with his teammates.
Shuker - 5 - just got off the plane, though, so not unhappy.

PATT really needs to cool down, in a competitive match he probably would have been sent off.

I much prefer Manny at full back and have said so from the start - he doesn't have the skill set to play in the middle, but is perfect at the back (though he is a bit of a hot-and-cold player, much like Troy. I remember one game last year where he got absolutely done over and over again at full back)valeo2010-07-24 00:11:16

Was Pavlovic #27? He really impressed me of the trialists. Chased the defenders and pressured them into mistakes. Nice turn and cross which Greenie almost got on the end of as well.

agree although i'd bump greenie up to 7 thought he was lively in the gap between the strikers and the midfield.

Hearfield 6. Really? gave away ball. bad temper. Awful crosses which only met the opposition players. I'd probably rate him 5.

Greenacre's assist.

Daniel 5?? he fitted in really well where leo had left off. Plus an assist. Looked comfortable with the ball.

I'd rate Pavlovic 6.5. as someone else has earlier mentioned, he looked decent in a 'target man's' position. He could be good as an impact player off the bench in last 20 odd minutes.

other ratings are fair.

Fair point about Hearfield, don't know why I gave him a 6 as was not particularly impressed with him.  Funny when he laughed at the Boca player, shaking his head after he attempted to boot the ball at him (Hearfield).

Didn't notice much from Daniel but that could just be classical me not paying as much attention as I should.

I think Daniel did a good job off the bench. He is good at quickly adapting to the pace of the game, of course has good distribution, and good set pieces. For me he has become a very good super sub. Has the ability to beat his man and stretch the defense but also doesn't over think things too much anymore and doesn't need to use all his tricks.

Think he had a good hitout off the bench

Daniel has been the Phoenix's best crosser of a football since he got here.

Daniel did plenty, given the time he was on the field, and possession he had.

Daniel put in a brilliant ball across the goal, in very GCU 6-0 like fashion, and Greenacre standing almost in the goal failed to get anything on it.

So don't rip on Daniel, just because you weren't paying attention.

As for Toto, I'll take attacking intent with some skill (eg Fred, Caceres, Bertos, Daniel) over lazy and defensive minded (eg Diego, Ferrante)

I am sure he will prove himself and establish his place in the team. we need to give him time. time to familiarize with the league, with players, players' style of football, pairing with strikers (crosses and through pass practise) and general pace of the game in general. I think that people who believe (at this moment) he's not good enough for phoenix, might praise him when he delivers what we want from him - Attacking midfield/playmaker with pace and skills.. IMO

But also possible that he could impress in the trial and then take his foot off the pedal once signed...who knows?

Hearfield was disappointingly poor and Pavlovic impressed.

Manny best player, Ifill looked dangerous but I think Boca quickly identified him as the danger man and did their best to shut him down.

i though macallister was quality

threw himself about with gusto, showed a decent first touch despite looking rather gangly

im stoked to have him in the side if he's guna play like that all year and he's the perfect foil for greenie

just about strongest eleven out there yesterday, hearfield was pants at times but he's got good pace and trickery when pushing his forward, and his defence will only improve with time

that game certainly gave me confidence for the season ahead, CMON NIX

i wondered about ifill's waistline pre-game as he seems the genetic type to be prone to weight fluctuation, but i thought he looked fine - he always carries a wee bit anyway and the white shirts do them no favours... although in saying that ifill didn't appear completely match-fit, he went missing at times and looked a tad tired so you may be onto something there...

+1.

LG, no idea how you can rate Daniel below hearfield!? As well as the assist for Durante's goal, he had that driving ball through off the short corner from Toto, plus some pinpoint passing (and yes, a couple of turnovers when he was trying to link up with Toto, who wasn't where he thought he was going to be).

Paston - 6 - Quiet night really.
Muscat - 8 - Got stuck and the passing game going forward was great.
Hearfield - 5 - Got better as the game went on but look very shaky in the first half.
Durante - 8 - played well - great performance oggy aside.
Sigmund - 7 - solid.
Brown - 7 - Solid and wound the oppo up brilliantly.
Ifill - 7.5 - looked dangerous - part of the reason Boca started losing it.
Lia - 7 did his job well and won all his fights.
MacAllister - 8 - good goal and held the ball up well - we were missing his like last season.
Bertos - 8 - impressive out dazzled the dazzlers.
Greenacre - 7 - worked relly hard and set up the first goal with more luck could have scored himself.

Daniel - 6 - Did well for the time he had.
Pavlovic - 6 - Impressed with work rate will be a solid replacement for MacAllister if he's injured.
Toto - 6 - Got involved but probably tried too hard - looks like he'll be a good addition with more time with the team.
Shuker - 5 - Hard to say based on 5 mins.

I've never been sold on Lia. A few good games for us, but just seems more of a liability than anything.

My own ratings
Pasty 6.5: A couple of saves, not busy at all.
Troy 6: Didn't have a good start but picked it up. Loved his fiery attitude.
Siggy 7: Proved Ricky that he could perhaps to the job with Dura at the back this year.
Dura 7: Great performance.
Manny 8: Man of the match in my opinion. I forgot how good he was at LB. I think he enjoys it more than DM.
Leo 7.5: The "old" Leo made an appearance at the RoF yesterday after a few months
Timmy 7: Quality and quantity, as usual.
Lia 6: Got skinned a few times but man can he run and recover the ball.
Ifill 8: Had the scored he would have been my MoM. But still he proved to be our best player by far.
Greenie 6.5: Ran heaps and got an assist. Pity he couldn't finish that cross from Daniel. Hope it's not a sign of things to come.
Dylan 7: Did the job well. I thought his touch let him down a few times. Still, he scored vs Boca Jrs. Here's a memory for the childern!
Daniel 7: Came on and got an assist straight away. I hope he gets more and more game time this year.
Toto 5.5: He has some tricks up his sleeve but he over-did it. I'd love to see more of him to be honest.
Pavlovic 6.5: For a youngster he really got involved. Showed a few good touches. Could be a better version of Draper if signed.
Shuker: Looks like Landon Donovan's older brother. Not really fair on him to play after jumping on a plane. Hopefully Ricky will look at him properly after the jet-lag subsides.

This. A lot of Hearfield bagging on the first 10 mins, but he seemed to settle and actually played quite well after that. Passed well. Don't give a damn about the fiery attitude, and want to see him run at players.

I would actually like to see him get some time up front this year, especially with no Costa. Lochy and Muscat at the back and Disco Troy Ifill and Leo up front...still trying to recreate that Disco Smeltz Leo combo...loved that fast skillful front line...

except that twice in a minute in the second half Boca got in behind Hearfield including for the goal.

Ill have to watch the replay to decide whether he at fault or somebody left him exposed but at the time i thought he got caught out

plus a terrible 40 yard switch he tried that put Boca on the counter attack

Think that's a little harsh - that was a difficult chance and his lack of size wouldn't have helped. Sure it was a great cross  but reacting in time to a cross fired in that quick and hard isn't easy.

6.5 is a decent mark. I just think that, as much as I like Greenie's high work-rate, he should be banging those 'ugly goals'. All it took there was a knee, bum, elbow, anything to deflect the ball into the net. Had he scored he probably would've gotten a 7/7.5.
