What an anticlimax...
Objectively, we were almost lucky to get a draw, but leading 3 - 1....
A lot of players' form fluctuated throughout the game, so it's hard to decide on some of these ratings.
Pasty 5.5 Tough conditions to be a keeper, but he looked out of sorts in that first 20 minutes
Manny 6.5 Did a good job, probably cost us the game when he was shifted from right back
Siggy 6 Poor in first 30 min, but made a some good contributions later
Dura 6 Some useful work, but was quite often stretched, not his fault
Lochie 5.5 Some good tackles etc, but was caught too far forward several times.
Leo 6 a few errors later, but was a good force attacking for the first hour
Timmo 5.5 Struggled to contain the passing of Caravella and co
Lia 5.5 Ditto
Ifill 6.5 Good first hour
Greenie 7.5 or 8 Top game, few errors
Big Mac 5.5 Was well martialed but not bad
Daniel 7 A shame he wasn't on earlier
Troy 4 Was torn apart by Porter

Ricky hmmm, now he knows why he started Manny instead of Troy.
What do you think?

Pretty much agree, maybe Siggy down a notch, Hearfield lucky to hit four.

Yep, can't argue with most of those but Siggy should be down to 4 or 5 - was quite bad, I think. Did well to get back to stop Porter scoring but the only reason Porter got there in the first place was because Siggy didn't clear it.

Greenie was brilliant and was the clear MoM for mine - not just his goals but everything else too.valeo2010-08-13 22:50:05

i thought siggie was fantastic.

defence failed in the air, when we had big mac on, he would clear it away

ok i think Sigmund saved us a fair few times. Was pretty happy. with his goalline saves.

Hearfield really was out of sorts. thought he mite have played more up the field when he came on?

Ifill was doing nothing in the second half. I would have taken him off instead of bertos -

Need to see replay but for that first goal Siggy didn't even jump - he was just waving his arms about complaining like an Italian

If Leo had been subbed a bit earlier he wouldn't have lost the ball in the middle that set up the 2nd goal for GCU...

i'd give most of them either .5 or 1 more than you have, but maybe absence has made the heart grow fonder

thought Big Mac did better (relative to some others) than your marks

i wonder if Timmo and Vinnie were worried about putting themselevs about because of the wet and consequently gave Culina too much time on the ball

Not fantastic but nowhere near as bad as some think. Saved us several times with gutsy interceptions and strong headers. Lots of errors from all the defenders.

I suspect that now we have a Socceroo defender at the club everything Siggy does will come under ridiculously intense scrutiny.

Hearfield nothing greater than a 1. Why dear lord why did he bring him on before Daniel! I'm effing raging over this.

I didn't have a problem with him coming on, but he shouldn't have gone in the back line and he shouldn't replaced MacAllister.

Remembering that Siggy is a central defender, he was covering Lochy playing wide left a lot, and the GCU long balls through in the wet weather the defenders were always going to be going backwards

He made some key saves for us that stopped GCU being up by a few goals, so I'd take that over anything else.

.

Agree, it was just a bad bad tactical change.

Thought Bertos and Ifill had drifted out of the game and if making a change one of these should have been off. Mac/Greenie were doing a good job and in those conditions you just have to get the ball forward.

The comedy conditions hardly made it easy for the players tonight, honestly surprised there wern't any major injuries, would find it hard to be too critical of some of the players tonight, as the pitch seemed to be rather unpredictable in patches!

Thought Lochhead, Lia, Ifill, Greenacre & Macallister were the best for us, and a few players just didn't find their feet, though I think that would have been even more of a hell of a game on a good dry pitch!  We looked good going forward til Mac went off, at the back, a bit shaky.

In the end, we didn't lose and I think that the draw was a fair enough result.

Spot on. Big Mac provided a good distraction that gave Greenie the space he needed. he was also a threat in the air, and always seemed to be in the box at the right time for crosses.
It's just that the crosses never seemed to be placed as well

hmm yeah taking off big mac was silly. if daniel had came on to replace one of ifill or bertos then thatd make sense to me.

When hearfield came on, i thought maybe we could have switched to a 442 with ifiill up top and disco on a wing? Not sure bout troy now at all. Think Pav would have been a better option?

Obviously weather played a huge part but here's my thoughts on the team.

Paston - 5 - Was poor.  Some good saves but overall unimpressed.
Siggy - 7 - Saved our bacon several times.
Durante - 5.5 - Didn't impress.
Lochhead - 6 - got up and down the wing fairly well.
Hearfield - 4 - Fairly useless.
Muscat - 5.5 - Didn't notice him a lot but when I did he seemed to do alright.
Brown - 6 - Did well in mid, won the ball several times, great flick across for Greenacre's first goal.
Lia - 6 - Won some ball in the middle, unleashed a very good shot which Moss did well to save.
Daniel - 7 - Was lively and played some good balls.  Wanted to go for the winner.
Bertos - 7.5 - Continually running and was effective.  Did the thing where he kicks the ball past a player and runs onto it which I like to see as he has the pace.
Ifill - 7.5 - Very effective as well.  Well taken goal and a few other fair shots.
MacAllister - 7 - Held the ball up well and showed good pace, unlucky not to get onto the end of one or two.
Greenacre - 8.5 - ran all up the front of the field and was rewarded with two goals (one off the underside of the bar which is always better).  Other good attempts at goal like that header.

Leo Bertos? One of his best displays for a very long time, despite that one disastrous loss of possession in midfield. Supplied two crosses that led to goals for us.

Yeah that bloody stupid (and obvious) loss of possession kind of took the gloss off it for me!!  I don't know if it was just the conditions but he seemed to not want to run at his man in the second half?

Thought a bump up deserved for most players.  GCU looked like a team that had blown out the cobwebs last week, we didn't, but still deserved the draw pretty much; so I'm happier with the performances overall and the result.  just imho

Pasty 5.5 -> 6.5 a couple of good saves and no major error
Manny 6.5 -> 7.0 as you said - did a good job
Siggy 6 - yeh but mixed some 7.5 some 5  - looked short of game time - funny that
Dura 6 -> 7 no errors, covered a lot, almost all the problems came from wide
Lochie 5.5 fair enough, was troubled at back and not effective enough forward, maybe 6
Leo 6 - yep -  again a mix, sometimes a seven, but a pretty good cock up for the goal and drifted out late i thought
Timmo 5.5 -> maybe a 6, midfield competed, but it was a tough day at the office, especially later in the game
Lia 5.5 -> 6 Ditto
Ifill 6.5 - agreed but again mixed, 8 to the middle of the game.  but should have been subbed with nothing happening from ~65mins
Greenie 7.5 or 8 -  yeh, but a point belongs to Dylan who made the space for Greenie, so  -> 7
Big Mac 5.5 -> 6.5 as above, could have improved defensive workrate from the top of the field
Daniel 7 A shame he wasn't on earlier - tick
Troy 4 Was torn apart by Porter -> + torn apart by Herbert, sack Ricki
nah, not really
Herbert 7 - has built a better squad and taken us far.  Still somewhat conservative and oh those subs sometimes

subs for me, as for many others it seems, were better Daniel, Troy for Ifill, Leo; let the fresh legs work hard wide, and back and forward and allow Brown and Lia to come more central

ah well good game

I think that because Siggy is a nice guy, and a friend of the fever, he can almost do nothing wrong.  There have been times where he has been terrible and everyone on here seems to blame everyone around him (fullbacks, other centre back, defensive midfielders, etc) for his mistakes.

This

He was ordinary last night. The first 15, he knocked long balls to the ball boy sitting behind the goal line, didn't even get up for Smeltz header (yeah there was contact but hardly anything to moan about and he prides himself on being a hard man) and while he did save us on the Porter goal, he was dragged out of position often. I think we can see the effect of how well the McKain-Durante partnership last year was and how a CB pairing should work. Will North be better? Who knows but I would think that neither him nor Sigmund would be that ordinary again.

As Frankie said, nice guy, shirt off my back for him but he was not all peaches and cream last night.

Paston 5 - could do with some more training on catching a ball. I know it would've been a bit slippery last night but this constant punching is ridiculous, and often dangerous.
Muscat 6 - was doing ok at right back, no idea why he was shifted into midfield
Lochhead 6 - did ok
Sigmund 5 - average, part of an overall shambolic defence
Durante 5 - see above comment
Lia 6 - was ok but defence didn't seem to be well protected throughout, Lia culpable?
Brown 4 - barely featured at all IMO, anonymous
Bertos 4 - can't remember him doing too much of note
Ifill 6 - great goal, not much from him after that though, tried to do too much at times
Greenacre 7 - good poacher goals, more of the same please, struggled a bit when McAllister inexplicably went off
McAllister 6 - didn't do a whole lot, but puts himself about and is a handful, should have stayed on

Subs -

Hearfield 1 - terrible, proved once and for all that he is not a right back, got ripped a new one
Daniel 3 - no time to really do much

Overall it was a strange game. They looked like scoring almost every time they came forward but somehow we found ourselves 3-1 up and almost cruising. The substitutions cost us the game IMO and trying to keep the lead intact by sitting back and taking a striker off was a mistake, we barely saw the ball up front after that and were under a lot of pressure. Taking Muscat out of the defence was a stupid decision and while it's not a SACK RICKI moment, I think Ricki has to take some of the flak for us not getting the 3 points with the tactical decisions he made.

I actually agree. Once Big Mac came off,we had no one up front to recieve it after we lugged it out of defence (which we had to do in conditions like that in the 2nd half - with the condition of that half of the pitch) to hold it up and retain possesion and get our defence pushed back up. Greenacre ended up being a defender, which is probably not what he should have been doing.

A tactically strange substition.
