Awesome performance and result. Our big players really took the responsibility well.

Mossy 7 No fault goals, sound
Brindall-South Hmmmm 5.5 but some very good moments including  great cross in first minute. Just gave his marker too much space as he got tired
Siggy 6.5 Did well, but dived out of the line for the first goal
Dura 7.5 Excellent display
Manny 6.5 Made a big difference to shut them out when he swapped roles, almost got himself sent off though
Lia 6.5 More errors than usual but did very well considering lack of experience around him
Ridenton 5.5 Worked hard, a few useful passes
Caira 6 Was better when he went into the back line
Carlos 8 Terrific passing and a great goal
Tyler 6 Worked very hard
Stein 9 Man this guy is on fire
Hicks 7 A great goal and made an impact
Brockie 5 Sadly, made little impact
Rufer Not on long enough to rate

Ernie 10 Did bloody amazing to get a result today

What do you think?

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

Brindell-South merits more than 5.5. Grade him according to his age and ability. He is only a backup player for this position after Fenton and Boxall.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Really tough assignment for him. He got done a few times by Goodwin, one which led to the second goal, but never gave up chasing and actually had the better of Goodwin after that goal until his legs gave out.

It would be hard to choose between Carlos and Stein for man of the match. Best game from Carlos in a Nix shirt in my opinion.

Not to seem like I'm trying to make excuses for him but the conditions would likely have played a factor. I imagine he has rarely travelled to, let alone played in the environment and temperatures before, nor played at all for sometime.

Also not fully convinced Stein is 9, close to though. Ernie though cranked it up to 11 in that game, terrific result.

How can you give Stein a 9? Does the amount of chances he had and the inability to use his right foot not have a bearing?

It is more a preference to use his left. You mark a player on their performance on the day, not their technical ability or perceived lack of it.

Moss 7 - still doesn't look great with crosses and corners.

Manny 7 - worked hard and looked better in the backs. lucky not to be sent off for a second yellow with 20 to go.

Shermy 5.5 - needs to mark tighter and some of his passes put us under pressure.

Durante / Siggy 7 - won alot in the air covered well to snuff out Taggert and his pace. Showed their experience.

Lia 6 - gave away possesion a little too much for me. Worked has as usual with good passion (i'm sure I heard the commentators say he's leading the league in intercepts... surely this is wrong)

Ridenton 7  - some really nice passes and tracked well in his first start. got caught in posession on occassion but did not look out of place.

Caira 6.5 - won the ball to set up the second goal and worked hard. Can't cross to save himself and did not offer much on attack. However, he did help us keep tighter through the middle.

Boyd 6 - some nice runs and good work on D but drifts out too much. Not sure its totally his fault, having to sit high up on the line does make it harder to get the ball when he's been told to not drop in.

Hernandez 8.5 - wide and open game was made for him. Nice passing / control and shooting.

Hysegems 8 - created a lot, made top runs and scored a good goal. Missed some good chances though.

Hicks 8 - made things happen and what a cracker of a goal for your first one as a pro.

Brilliant result all things considered.

I thought brindell-south looked very promising.

Rating above seemed fair, as well as the comments, but his pace, size, strength and right foot all seem like very good attributes to me. Hope Merrick is working hard with him as he could be someone for the future by the looks.

Can't believe some of the bagging he got in the match-thread, brainless crap.

Grade him according to how he played, like everyone else is graded! I think those marks are pretty fair

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Agree. Its a pro league. Opposition don't go 'well he's young and hasn't played much so we will go easy on him' He gets graded on what he does.

Ridenton at least 6.5

Agree. You can't grade a player on what he really cannot do either technically or because of his age/ injury status/ fitness etc.
Brindell-South cramped up because he has no match fitness yet he commited himself fully. For a third-choice RB I reckon he did alright, but I also agree that he was the weak spot that the Jets exploited, predictably.  Goodwin has not scored since late 2012 till last night.

paulm he got bagged in the match thread as he was poor. 5.5 is a fair reflection.

I think it seems clear that we can only have one of JBS, Caira or Fenton on the flanks at any one time.

@paulm I love Ernie as much as the next guy but you'd be naive to think that he's always giving his honest opinion in a situation like this. He may well have been impressed with JBS, or he may have been disappointed, but either way he'll know that publicly what is most helpful for the player's development is a bit of encouragement. He's very media savvy.

So nothing but a well-crafted set of lies about Brindell-South then, impressive, he must be rubbish after all.

Yep, he was very complimentary in the media about a Leo a couple of months back also, but we've rarely seen him since (even before the injury). I wouldn't at all take from his comments that we'll be seeing heaps of JBS in the future once others come back. Ernie just tends to like building his players up in the media, and giving them confidence that he believes in them, which is a pretty good thing generally.

I didn't take that from his comments at all. I just believed what he said made sense and seemed more logical than just bullsh*t to mentally build up a young player.

Going back to the match-thread now and the opinion is very divided, so I'm hardly the only person saying Brindell-South looked promising. For the record I agreed with the 5.5 rating but I wouldn't say "he was poor" as a general comment on his performance. He was targeted all day and did very well under the circumstances.

Huysegems definitely should've scored from that cross too.

I could be wrong but I'm sure the name on the back of JBS shirt was spelt Brindall-South. I can't find any photographic evidence but am sure I saw it while watching the game.

How old is JBS?
He can play either wing back, is fairly fast and I understand young. Could be a huge asset to the team and national side on years to come. He has a lot of development ahead of him he could become a quality player given some patience. That's probably where Ernie is coming from. By shermy's goals, standards and what is expected of him in his development he had a good and impressive game, objectively he was not good enough as an a-league wing back. But not a terrible 3/4th choice Rb as I'd put him behind Fenton, Boxall, and Leo. I'm curious if Leo had been fit whether Ernie would have played him there.

I've been a bit surprised by the overwhelming praise of him, I thought he was ok, did well in patches and no so well in others, it's telling that both goals came down his side.

He's not quite the 'second coming' which seems to be thrust of some...

Since he is both an Aussie and a Ginge is he the official scapegoat for 2013/14?
