Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

I'm not sure what mood I'm coming from with these...
Paston 6 Did well, with not a lot to do
Siggy 5.5 Struggled with the go forward part, and gave the wing quite a bit of room
McKain 6 Had a hard time with their big strikers
Dura 5.5 Ditto
Lochie 6 A couple of useful runs forward, defended ok
Lia 6 Worked hard
Brown 6 worked hard, but needed to nail one of his chances, still gives away silly fouls
Bertos 6 Lost in the midfield as the game went on. We needed to revert to 4 4 2 so Leo could have the space to do damage.
Daniel 7 Damned good crosses, hardly any dives
Ifill 8.5 Deserved to have scored the winner, excellent game
Greenie 6.5 His luck wasn't in, would've buried any of Brown's chances
Hearfield 6.5 Showed what he could have done at right back if given the chance for the start
Diego hmmmm
Ricki - needed to change the formation
Ref - allowed it to get far too physical
What do you reckon?

I only saw Daniel do one bad dive. One of his best performances he's had for us.

Greenie was average again. Nowhere near a 6.5 - didn't really do anything.

Lochy up half a point, Greenacre down a half but otherwise I wouldn't dispute too much, Oi Oi. Apart from that badly defended goal and the usual hoof balls up the paddock I thought our re-jigged defence went pretty well against a dangerous Adelaide attack.

Bertos did not look like he enjoyed playing up the middle. He's far more effective running at defences from the flanks. Perhaps a Ricki ploy that didn't pay off tonight.

Agree all over the park except I do think our defence could be worth a half or whole point more.
Lochhead did play better and he is getting there. I thought our two central defenders did quite well to keep Owusu and Cristiano out.

Ifill was outstanding and yes Daniel too. I liked that Daniel and Ifill switch around and would like to see Bertos wider more.

And yes Hearfield did well with what he got.

All the players who needed to prove themselves did in my book

Agree with you PWF - defence was a lot better than it has been and very good on the Adelaide strikers.

I like seeing Ifill or Leo running down the wings, more of that please.

I was disappointed in the game (but not about to slit my wrists or jab needles into me) but there is a lot more promise about the team this season (hope I haven't jinxed them now).

Agree with you Oi Oi, thought Greenacre had another tough night but wouldn't change his rating as at times he was having to do things on his own, without a 2nd out and out striker this is probably going to happen a lot this season.

Ifill was immense and I thought Daniel wasn't far off it.

I thought that Greenacre did alright.  He got very little protection in the first half, but kept working and putting his body in the right position to win free kicks, etc.

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked

Now I'm firefly like a burning kite

In my opinion Greenacre would do alot better if he had Ifill up beside him instead of a 5 man midfield. 4 4 2 could have been alot better for us.

Ifill, Daniel outstanding. Lochy getting better. Lia worked hard.

Oi Oi - The starting 11 only got 1.5 points more in total than your ratings last week when they were woeful. Probably more on the correct side tis week and far too generous last week.

Does Diego still want residency? Doesn't look like he wants to be here

What made Daniel's performance special was from start to finish he tracked back and defended with focus.
We all know how good he is with crossing and dribbling but that added so much more to the team effort!!

I was happy with Daniel's performance. Let's not forget that the lad hasn't had a full game in ages, and no matter how hard you train, if you do not play 90' every week you won't be at the same pace as the others. Lia has heart, I like how he takes his shots everytime he gets the chance, unlike other members of the team. If he keeps on going like this, he'll get his first goal soon.
Siggy improved from last week, and McKain/Durante did their usual bit. Glad to see Brown back in the squad.

Ifill was the best player on the pitch, having scored two (difficult) goals and running himself into the ground. The linesman spoiled his night. Greenacre wasn't as pungent as he has been, but man the guy runs a marathon every week, and is not afraid of getting hit in order to protect the ball.

Leo was OK, but didn't shine. But then again, I think we're used to see Super Leo every week, so when he puts in a performance like yesterday (a positive one, but not a super one), we feel like we're missing out.

It's a pity we didn't get the 3 points, though let's remember that Adelaide hit the post twice, and had they won it would have been a harsh result!

I like the Nix's style of play, they build it up, then use Ifill, Greenacre and Bertos to go forward and with the support of the midfielders and full backs (when they do in fact come up) build some serious pressure. But, to me, this comes to a great pressure. Just look at Ifill/Greenacre, who, in order to get a chance have to run their arses off every time. I wonder if it would pay off to play 2 proper strikers up front, so that we don't always have to send 1 man vs 3 or have to wait 20 seconds for the support to come from behind.

That being said, we're a tough side, no doubt about that!

totally disagree. HE WORKS HIS BOLLACKS OFF !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and what the f**k can he do when the crosses particularly are at knee height ?
(or the Daniel one, on his LEFT BOOT just outside the 18 box on the LEFT SIDE, which missed the goal and side netting by 5 metres ?)

and what the f**k can he do when ricki puts him up front by himself ?

Yes, he runs a lot. When he did have the ball at feet he didn't look like doing much with it - even when there were players around. To me, he looks like he can do the basics alright, but not much more. This is better than a few players actually, but he wasn't looking like setting anything alight.

Greenacre didn't really have any decent chances, did he? I can't remember
I like tautologies because I like them.

No solid chances at goal. He took a shot from outside the left hand corner of the box I think. Difficult as. He probably would have stuck in the chances that Brown had if he was there.

Paston 5.5 we look vulnerable at set piece time, and for me that is the keepers responsibility to organise
Siggy 5.5 Struggled with the go forward part, and gave the wing quite a bit of room

Dura 5.5 Ditto

Bertos 6 Lost in the midfield as the game went on. We needed to revert to 4 4 2 so Leo could have the space to do damage.
Daniel 7.5 Damned good crosses, tried to keep busy.
Ifill 8.5 Deserved to have scored the winner, excellent game
Greenie 6.5 Worked hard, holds ball up well, occasionally isolated and recieving ball from to far away (not his fault).
Hearfield 6 Didn't do much in time given, got forward well.
Diego awful

My slight changes.

I would say after running a marathon we probably was quite pungent.

Pretty much agree with these, would tweak Lochead and Lia up 0.5, thought both of them played strong games and Paston, Bertos and Brown down 0.5 Paston I agree entirely with your comments, Brown down for missing couple of sitters and getting badly skinned which almost let Adelaide in.

For me Bertos totally uncomfortable in the role he played, needs to be back out wide.

too hard on Siggie

lets remember he doesn't normally play RB and is not used to getting forward.

you can't blame him for not 'pushing up the flanks'

While we consistently put only 1 striker forward teams are always going to mark them like Smeltz.  I remember many games last year where Smeltz was also marked down for barely being present most of the game till he suddenly scored a goal - Greenacre does well but against teams used to marking our one forward you need some Smeltz magic to score. Greenacre on the other hand does a lot of prep work, laid in a few crosses and is very good at receiving long balls forward.  If we can push Ifill up next to him so the defenders have more than one striker to mark, he'll get a lot more space and be able to get in good positions.

When Ifill scored (both) his goals the defense were all over Greenacre, meaning Ifill was able to make cutting runs into space totally unmarked.

Greenacre is a bit of a strange one for me. His work rate is ridiculous and wins a lot of free kicks but he isn't a target man and also can't run at/beat defenders. He's kind of like Smeltz in that regard, I suppose, but Smeltz has a bit more creative ability.

That is what I like to see one day . . .

Honestly, just a cheek scorpion kick by him would make my day plus a clean sheet would get him a 11/10.

I reckon a full field run / goal would scrape him a 7 1/2.

Must get a Clean sheet and the following:

Storm the box and take the ball in the air every time the opposition was going up for a header.
Save a penalty.
Score from a goal kick.
Make a perfect slide tackle outside the box.
Never make errors or any uneasy moments.
Come up for a corner and score the winner with a perfectly weighted volley after the ball has been layed back by greenacre.
And a couple of assists.

How could anyone get a ten?

I like the guy. But he hasn't shown yet the ability to be part of a quick counter attack the way Smeltz could.

As much as I thought the front line of Daniel, Ifill, Greenacre and Leo ingenious- there were times when I would have liked  us to break much quicker and more dynamically...Hearfield definitely- Leo wider, and Costa are names that might give us that.

Greenacre holds up well, and wins us a lot of corners, free kicks, throws and possesion up front. If he's picking up the scraps he really needs the attention to be on someone else as well I guess...being tightly marked doesn't help.
