Well, over all it wouldn't be one of the Nix's best displays of football, but good teams win ugly at times, so I guess we're grateful. Two superb goals though.
Pasty 7 Did everything right, hope the injury isn't too bad, not needed much
Manny 8 Brilliant set up for Leo's goal... the chip the one-two, take it to the line, square pass for the tap in. Defnded very well too, only dodgy moments were when he nearly brought down strikers running into the box.
Siggy 7.5 Very sound, much improved, kept Simon under wraps most of the time
Dura 7.5 Led by example, always in the right place
Lochie 7 Did his job well
Ifill 6 One super goal, some moments of sheer magic, but a dreadful first half.
Timmy 6.5 Good interceptions
Vinnie 6 Worked hard
Leo 7 Great to see him score, did a lot of good work trying to control things.
Big Mac Hmmmm worked hard, continually off side, dispossessed too often 5.5
Greenie 7 Covered back well and some great linking work
Toto 5 Not convincing. Surely Daniel must be higher up the pecking order.

What do you think??

First half Siggy 2, 2nd half Siggy 8.

Browny and Lia 5 - both very average.

Rest about right.

Brownie and Lia need to find their last season mojo. Plenty more to see in the middle from those two. Though similar can be said for most of the side.

It was't that Tim played badly, he just was not in the game. Sure, the ball to Paul I was great but apart from that he was never in it. If you go back over the game he only touched the ball about 10 times.

Then he needs to bring himself into the game.

It's not surprising Brown and Lia were a little bit anonymous since so much of our game plan seemed to involve the defence booting the ball way over the top of them.

Paston 7 - looked pretty decent, less punching, more catching
Muscat 8 - good game, great play for first goal
Lochhead 6 - solid enough, I remember that silly foul in the 2nd half that could have been costly
Durante 7 - usual solid game from him
Sigmund 6 - seemed to do ok today
Lia 5 - missing in action and a bit casual when he did get the ball. Abysmal shot late on too.
Brown 6 - also missing in action, extra point for his assist
Bertos 6 - scored, but did very little after that
Ifill 7 - good goal, still trying to do too much sometimes, missed a few other chances
Greenacre 6 - not involved a whole lot, good pass for first goal
McAllister 6 - decent performance, could maybe do with a goal

Subs
Toto 5 - did ok, nothing spectacular
Daniel 3 - not much time, could've had a goal with a bit of composure

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

I actually thought Toto looked alright when he came on, agree with 5, and that Daniel should be ahead of him. But still, he looked good.

Bit harsh. both deserve a 7 at least.

Three for me, and two for them.

100% agreed

Don't think Brown and Lia did anything wrong this week.

Manny was clear MoM for mine - that setup/run was just beautiful and he defended good as well. Thought that Lochy was impressive as well.

Ifill had an off day but still managed to score - kind of shows how good he is.

Leo had a good first half but drifted in the 2nd.

Macallister was disappointing for mine but allowed Greenie to play his natural game again and Greenie performed well for the 2nd game in a row.

Toto should not be in front of Daniel.valeo2010-08-22 20:49:06

just focusing on midfield.

Brown did fine i thought. He's not a possession midfielder but he was tidy enough when he did have the ball, created a goal and got forward into some handy positions.
Lia I can recall little of except one raking long ball. He has not started the season especially well I dont think (Boca, GCU and today he's been off the pace).

Perhaps Lia will be the fall guy when North arrives?

Seems pretty evident at the moment that we have a lot of work to do in the midfield area.......not helped of course by the long ball over their heads!

I honestly think North should just be a straight swap for Sigmund. Though I trust Rickis judgement.

But Bertos? Muscat does deserve to hold his spot. So something like this:

                      Paston
        Durante       Sigmund    North
Muscat                                 Lochhead
            Lia             Brown
                        Ifill
               Greenacre    McAllister

Though could quite easily slot Muscat to where Lia is and Bertos to where Muscat. My team doesn't give us a lot of attack out wide.

CCM worked out that Sigmund cannot distribute the ball and pressured him every time the ball went to him and he responded with an aimless hoof apart from one terrific ball he put through to Ifill. If there is any thought of playing 3 at the back Sigmund will need to pick up on his distribution big time. Defensively he was great.

Lia did a great job breaking down play in the midfield but was half a yard off the pace all day when it came to receiving the ball. In 4-4-2 Lia/Brown is a limited central midfield and really needs Bertos to get more involved.

Actually thought Toto looked ok when he came on.

Thought Paston put in a quality performance commanded his area well, pulled off a top save and all of this with an injury.

One good ball ?  Go back and have a closer look.  There were a number of occassions where Sigmund played balls forward to a player.  It was something I watched closely and very little was an 'aimless hoof'.

Not sure what you watched closely! Most were aimless hoofs.

Paston wasn't tested, but I thought he had a good game. He played really confidently despite his injury.

Man of the match easily Manny, he had a great game. I don't think anyone had a terrible game, it was more that the team didn't gel a lot of the time. We'll only get better this season.

shouldn't that be "hooves"

not that I'm wishing to intervene on the more pressing matter of how many were aimless

it's never good the nix going up a goal, the intensity drops.  this was the worst (or certainly least entertaining)  game that i've seen from them since we got rid of clebersen and co
but 2-0 is just fine and dandy

it didn't help that the Mariners pushed the off side line up and compressed play.  which might not have mattered if we had avoided the 7 offsides in the first half.  mind you i'd like to see the replays - the linesman seemed to have a seriously wong day, including one not given in the second half against simon. Any-one seen the replays on tv?

i thought toto looked quicker than daniel - both accross the park and quicker playing first touch balls, and he didn't give it away any more than daniel does imho
love daniel so not arguing against him

got a better idea about mcallister's game today; useful and greenacre will enjoy having him, not much pace there tho', nor touch

still, both good signings - giving us depth and that target option up front.  Pav may pressure bigMac for his place later in the season

would love to see toto and daniel both on as subs for some good time, with toto central for lia, brown dropping into the deeper defensive midfield role, or going to a back three with lia brown and toto all playing central midfield

great result  slow game

Disagree with you there: Siggy's distribution was badly off on quite a few occasions, especially in the first half. BUT all of Durante, Lochy and even Manny were guilty of firing away possession. The hoof ball forward was clearly Ricki's game plan to combat CCM - not one I agree with but it got us the result we needed.

Once again, because North is seen as Siggy's natural replacement I think many are paying disproportional attention to his game, while mistakes by Durante, Lochy etc are ignored. Even Fred de Jong was doing this.

De Jong was awful.

He told us about a formation that wasn't played, he described tactics that weren't played. Generally the first 45 from both commentators was dreadful.

Which is why I am currently downloading a decent commentary to listen to on the ipod tomorrow.

Although even Piney and Chotey must have struggled to make that game sound exciting....

Fixed

Also the offsides were pretty spot on. The reffing in the game was pretty good actually.

Commentary - moan, moan, cant stand those two.

Toto, I thought he is interesting and would like to see him in the middle, slipping delicate passes through.

Didn't pay too much attention in the 2nd, but from what I saw the AR got every one right in the first half - Players kept coming back onside to receive, but were offside to start with when the ball was played.

i'd agree that goal was a peach, but i doubt you'll find a game in the last two seasons with less shots on target from the nix (2) together with less corners (3).  for me, overall, it was the least exciting game in two years, but you're entitled to your b'sh*t opinion

thanks aitkenmike + hep re the offsides

Must have been the game plan as I was watching Brown and when Durante and Sigmund had possession Brown would just jog forward and at times Macallister, Greenacre and Brown where all within about 10metres of each other as a front 3 with long balls played into this area.

Brown hardly ever made moves looking for the ball, again evident when play was switched and Lia would be making the runs to offer himself to wide players and Brown would stay central, even though he would have been a lot closer to the play than Lia.

Must have been how Ricki wanted it. Definitely resulted in long balls as Lia was the only option to pass to in central midfield.

Sooner I get back down to the ROF to watch a game live again, the better. Obviously watching games on telly is giving me a false impression of McAllister because so far my opinion of him involves the words big, slow and carthorse. Not been impressed at all from what I've seen of him so far. Another downside of having him in there is that we are now bypassing our midfield to knock long balls to him. Hmm.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

everyone did fine except for that 15min period after half time. CCM never looked like scoring. You can only beat whats in front of you.

Was arguing with my mate when watching that Siggy is a good player so we were counting how many of his long balls found a Nix player, was 2 out of about 9, the rest went straight to CCM players.

Other than that I thought he played well, great diving header from a corner to clear at one stage.

For me he's definitely added that extra presence up front we were lacking last year. But also agree his ball skills are fairly average at best.

Somebody needs to explain the offside rule to him - it was so infuriating watching him continually stay goalside of the defenders on purpose, then coming back after the ball was played to him, automatically making him offside.
