Paston 7.5 flawless no mistakes, instilling confidence
lockhead 3 cant cross, cant pass, is looking worse with every week
Durante 9 looking quality kept smeltz under shackles
Siggy 7.5 solid as ever, average distibution but can be forgiven for that
Manny 6.5 gave the ball away at crucial times but solid enough
Daniel 6, apart from hitting the bar ran around like a mug
Lia 6.5, solid tackling, great hack for the yellow card
Brown 7.5 high workrate closed players down well
Leo 8.5 Skinned players with easy needs to convert chances to goals
Greenacre 4.5 Did absolutely nothing... needs to start scoring goals or should be looking at a spell on the rimu
Ifill 7.5 Always class, needs to get fit and ride challenges

Costa 7 did well in limited time
Caceres 6 looked ok

Ricki 7.5 Played a 442 finally, and dominated, deserved 3 points

Didn't bother reading the first time after seeing Lochy's 3, but saying Daniel 'ran around like a mug' is also lolworthy

Bertos really should be looking to provide, rather than score.  If he's been told to be aiming at goal, the instruction is somewhere between desparation and wishful thinking.  If he's just doing his own thing, then the situation is much more serious.

Lochhead is certainly having some issues.  Not sure I'd rate him a 3, as FM's rating system has grafted itself to my brain, but definitely needs to turn his form around.  I think he's probably better advised to focus on the through balls and short passes with whoever's ahead of him, as his crosses are looking very inconsistent right now.  Actually, I'm not even sure who's supposed to be on the end of them, so wasteful might be a better term.

Greenacre is a different story.  He put in his usual game of running around trying to do the job of a bigger and stronger man.  Benching him won't help unless there's a replacement, and the service to young Costa didn't suggest that Ricki's system currently accomodates a small, quick forward.

Speaking of the manager: the 4-4-2 obsession some posters have on this board shouldn't be an excuse for marking up Herbert's performance: if 4-5-1 is a more natural fit to his best team, then it's a matter of working out the plan of attack from that shape.  That said, the team looked motivated and worked well together in defence and build-up.  Set pieces looked better, too.  But there's still no finish.  If it was just one game of struggling to score, then "bad luck" would be the right conclusion, but as things stand, something more has to be done.

I don't think Lochhead was that bad. GCU make a lot of use of those wide attacking backs so he and Manny were put under a lot of pressure, not all of which they coped with admittedly. But they were still sound in the air and firm with their tackles.

Lochhead's crosses were no worse than anyone elses I might add. Can't remember a great deal of decent ball from anyone, except from corners.

why can Siggy be forgiven for his poor distribution, but not Lochy?  Last I checked they were both professional footballers

I also love how our left back gets rated down because he doesn't cross, even though he did his job (defending, not crossing) to a good level.

I won't defend the OP's precise ratings, but Full Backs in the modern game are expected to be able to provide extra attacking options with crosses or helping the wide man ahead of them to get through the defence.  Centre Backs, not so much - it's more a matter of not giving away possession in key areas (though posing a threat in the box is a big bonus).

so their distribtion is relevant then.  Either way, poor distribution by either of them (either as a full back trying a cross or putting a winger in space, or a centre back trying to find the feet of any player) is not good and should be marked as such.    How you can say one player was sh*t as his distribution was poor, but another one was good even though his distribution was poor is a mystery to me.

You've over-simplifyied things with "their distribution is relevant".  And I'm pretty sure that you knew that when you typed it. :(  Clearly, the OP was giving into hyperbole.  It's more accurate to say that Lochhead was a bit disappointing, whereas Sigmund performed adequately despite some shortcomings.  Both can do better.

what the f**k can Greenacre do when he can't get the f**king ball ???????????

he did a good job in the circumstances, he cam back numerous amounts of times and was defending with Brown, Lia.

Full backs these days are expected to provide some attacking options, and Lochhead has shown in the past that he can do better in this area.

Perhaps it was that Lochy as a fullback did it well in the first season and people just cannot get their head around the fact, (myself included), that he is not quite the same player.

Seamonster central defender is forgiven as he is fearless, plays his heart out and tackles well, (yes I look at Siggy with rose-tinted specs),  and I reckon his distribution can only improve. At this level the lack of an all singing all dancing defender can be forgiven surely?

Be interesting to see who the back 2 will be when Mckain is back, as Durante cannot be dropped the way he is playing at the mo. Unless of course Mckain shifted back into midfield to accomodate Siggy?

When Porter hit siggy in the face with a full blown shot I was surprised he got up straight away and carried on as if nothing had happened. That must have stung/hurt.

Yeah normally, you have players clutching their faces for 10 minutes like they've lost an eye or something.

Sniffle is struggling for mobility at the moment, last night he physically couldn't do what he wanted, ie push past a player. Should have been taken off at 60 minutes.
Sigmund is a top bloke but does not pass the ball to an A-League level.
If I had to choose between Lochead and Traore I probaly would take the African

can't agree more with that, service at times to greenacre is piss poor. He makes some intelligent runs but no one can deliver a decent enough ball to reward it. he works hard which makes up for his lack of goals I reckon. He's a proven goalscorer, I reckon they will come.

you have a short memory, you forget a free header from a corner which he muffed, im not disagreeing he works his nuts off, would just be good to c him hit the net

Greenacre has been dissapointing in general and he had a bad one last night.
Ifill's strain I think could be worse than we know, he is not himself last two.

Not sure that Costa is doing enough to land a place on the bench even...anyone know what happened to Chen?

Why? He's done nothing wrong in the limited opportunites so far.

Btw, the original post's mark of Lochy is massively harsh.

Sigmund "does not pass the ball to an A-League level"? What does that mean? From the games I watch, and (nerd alert) I watch them all, the A-League is week in, week out chock full of terrible passing and lousy distribution. That's why it's the A-League and not the EPL.

In fact Sigmund is no worse in this department than the other four defenders, including McKain, and he's a helluva lot better than quite a few A-League players I can think of.

Re Traore, he is very quick, gets forward well but have you noticed that his final pass is invariably rubbish? Also his defensive postioning is not good, which often leaves the cumbersome Rees exposed, and he's not much good in the air either. So I'll stick with the Welly boy thanks.

Traore is kind of like the anti thesis of Lochhead. Can't defend, but is awesome making runs going forward.

But doing nothing wrong will continue to only get us draws. We need people to do things well so we can win.

Yeah I agree that Sigmund is never going to win awards for passing, but then if he is marking other players and doing what he has done every other week, well then I'm not going to get too caught up in it. If he was a better passer, one would suggest he may not be playing at this level so its all relative.

I've been away from computer access for several days. Good to see someone maintained the regular thread, though dunno about some of those ratings. Here are my very belated ones:
Paston 7 Looking more confident by the week, under little pressure though
Manny 7 Did his part in that tight back four
Siggy 7 Good movement kept the attackers under wraps for once
Durante 8.5 Excellent game, read it, and dealt with it
Lochie 6 Gave a bit too much room at times, but defended well for the most part
Leo 8 Ran at them, harrassed them, good free kick almost scored from, set up Ifill's sliding chance at far post....
Vinnie 6.5 He and Brown had the better of the midfield
Brown 7 A good game in there
Daniel 6 Not running at the defence as much as he could be, shame that header didn't go in
Ifill 6 Two misses, but another good game
Greenie 5.5 Should have scored with the header
Costa 5 Disappointingly, is too easily dealt with by oppositions
Feel free to argue, if you can still remember it!

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

unfortunately limited chances are all that he's going to get at the moment and when those 'limited' chances come along he has to grab them and show what he's got...unfortunately he isnt and already the opposition seem to be able to deal with him too easily

How do you know that? I thought that in the 10 minutes he had on the weekend he held the ball up a couple of times while having 2 defenders on him until he got support, and made an excellent run in behind the defenders which would have put him through on goal had not Ifill's pass to him been headed away by the defender.

That's a pretty useful 10 minute stint as far as I'm concerned.

I used to worry about the mid field and backs, now it's the otherway around.
