Players pay......too much?

Interesting article in today SMH.

The CEO of Sydney United has come out and said that its ridiculous how much A-League players are getting paid considering the financial state of many of the clubs. This obviously applies to the Nix.

How viable is for a club to be losing $1 million a year? Obviously player salaries are a big part of the cost.

Before anyone says we can't cut their wages as all they would do is bugger off overseas consider some of the facts from the SMH article.

The average wage for the A-League is $135,000 Aus. The median wage for the MLS is $89,000 Aus.....the average wage in the Dutch second division is $60,000 Aus.

I was quite shocked when I saw these figures. There are an awful lot of very average players in the A-League. Surely there is scope for a lowering of the salary cap to help out the clubs. You could still pay bigger money for your Hernandez's and Ifills but the average A-League journeyman does not deserve anything more than the average wage.

You cut the salary cap by 30% and suddenly you have the Nix close to break even point.

The league minimum is well over the NZ average wage, it's not far under that dutch average.

The cap has generally gone up each season, not down and a number of clubs (or at least supporters) have suggested it should be abandoned altogether so the rich can get richer.

The MLS wage is US$ 89 000, obviously right now with them almost having parity with the US$ that is a similar amount, but in the past it would have been more in AUS$

The average Australian salary is like 90k AUD anyway. And to be fair for the level that one must to get to the a league its a fair pay imo.

Just living in the wrong country for money tbh lol

The average salary is NOT 90K. That is rubbish.

Pay youth a little more to encourage more in - decrease marquee wages. How the hell is somebody like Carle worth 1 mil+?

I once read There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics
You can manipulate statistics to show many things, and then when you compare them with other data from different reviewers the result can be comprised.
I read the a few years ago Royce Brownlee left the phoenix because he could make more in construction back in AU. (I'm sure he was rubbish too though)

just IMO but I'd guess for the amount of work and effort you have to do and people beat out there are much less demanding careers out there for the same money. The professional football world is still very small.

Besides, whats Diego got to hope for if you cut his pay :P

I remember seeing somewhere that the minimum wage for the A-League was $55k AUS

Raynes makes a good point about statistics.  I doubt that MLS figure.  There are so many marquee loopholes and such in the MLS salary cap that it's almost a joke.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Was it not Brownlie who hit the crossbar in the last few minutes or so?

I am a strange person. I still believe that discussing what others get paid is bad form. It is none of our business really.

Argue that it is causing losses to our club and could send them under if you will, it isn't the players fault. What they get paid is what they get paid. And I am entirely uninterested in the amount they get paid.

I think the blame (if any) intended is with the FFA for having a high salary cap,not with the players for accepting the money.

Interesting discussion. I think its a bad look to reduce a salary cap, some players will leave and the PFA will get up in arms.

Allegedly

I think most of us would all love to be paid to play football. And I think if we were in a situation where we were good enough to do so we would try to get as much money as we can. So I say good on them!

interesting stats.  hopefully we will start seeing more quality players arrive in search of these salaries.

personally, if i was running a hard up club, i'd spend more on the coach and a handful of awesome players.  more quality would follow, even at a lower rate.
