Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

Well , what a mixture, here goes....

Pasty 6 Had to make a couple of good stops, beaten too but saved by post
Manny 5.5 Not really on song
Siggy 6.5 Usual stout hearted game
Dura 7 Led by example. Boys... this is how you score. Are you watching strikers/?
Vinnie 5 Better than last time in defence, but poor balls from left foot
Leo 6 Started off in brilliant form, beating his man etc, but blew his one on one when he should have squared to Ifill and then went downhill
Smith 6 Played almost alone in the midfield, everyone else seemed too keen to get up front
Brown 5 Couldn't bury his chances, left the midfield to Smith
Dani 5.5 A couple of good crosses, but caught in possession again
Ifill 6.5 The only person with vision for a consistently decent pass, missed a couiple of great chances
Greenie 5.5 Ran around, not much happened
Pavlov 3.5 Dear oh dear, his touch was terrible
Ward 5 Eventually scored but little other impact

Their keeper 10

YF 7.5 sounded good on the TV

What do you think??

I would bump Vinnie up to 6.5, apart from that I agree with everything else...

Agreed on Lia, not because he was brilliant but because he made a decent fist of a difficult job. Pushed forward at every opportunity, defended well and made one important goal saving tackle.

Yeah I thought Smith had one of his better performances.

I thought that smith was our top man this weekend even though Tim brown left him exposed a lot. I thought that Lia didnt do too badly also considering he isnt a left back

I think Smith should be starting every time. I can't understand how either Lia or Brown start ahead of him, let alone both of them.

The only player who put in a complete shift (i.e. performed the entire time he was on the pitch) yesterday was Smith.

A number of the others played well in patches, (SigmUnd, Lia, Leo, Greeny) but only in patches. It was one of the worst performances I can remember for a few including, unbelievably, Ifill and Manny.

There was a general lack of intensity across the park.

Brown seems to have been told he doesn't have to tackle and track back anymore and he can just seagull around the advantage line with Greeny playing behind Brown half the game and doing the hard yards. Greeny is our striker but he played so deep yesterday I can't remember him having a shot / header on goal - bizarre !

I think Sanchez would be advised to start looking for his next club - he has been all but invisible since he has been moved out from the centre but , as an import, he should still be good enough to make a mark on the game.

Our bench yesterday was a terrible indictment on our absence of any depth past the starting 11 - God help us if we get anymore injuries / suspensions.

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

Their Keeper had to be man of the match by miles. Ok, so some of his saves he didn't know much about but what a display. We should sign him to replace Warner and remember Pasty is not getting any younger.

His reflex saving was pretty good (in fact really good) but I don't actually like him as a keeper that much. He doesn't really command the box, his judgement seems shaky and his distribution wasn't that great. This isn't entirely his fault but the Gold Coast defence was also completely unorganised at times. I wouldn't sign him just because of that game. Although I can't see Warner being here next season.

thought greeny was good yesterday simple passes and held up the ball every time. Ifill was wasteful but was at least trying to make things happen even though it was sometimes the wrong option. Pav needs to work on his left foot shooting/control one trick pony cutting back on his right every time.

I say sign Sanchez up. Bench Brown, play Smith as our DM and   put Sanchez where he belongs further up the centre of the park. Sanchez's touch and control are clearly ahead of anyone in the team bar maybe Ifill and Durante. hes just not a left mid. Ifill would probably be better out on the left. With an aging squad players like tim brown, leo etc.. it would be a mistake to let Sanchez go.

Smith was our best for sure.

Why the hell Sanchez aint in the middle ahead of greenie or brown is just just beyond me.

Smith easily MoM (OK Dura was pretty damn good too).
Until he got injured he was our only midfielder and still won far more balls than he should have, and his distribution was great.
Sanchez looks pretty disinterested in staying and I don't blame him. So I say keep Smith instead.

Just don't see Herbert doing it, so Sanchez probably wont want to stay.

Agree. Imagine a midfield of Sanchez at the top, Smith in the middle, with Muscat as the defensive mid.

That would be pretty solid I would say.

Perhaps Greenie steps down to more of a coaching role next season, and Ricki stops kidding himself and just plays Brown as a striker, seems like he spends most of his time up there anyway.goldienz2012-03-05 12:43:18

Pavlov 3.5 Dear oh dear, his touch was terrible

Seriously, even 3.5 is being generous. It wasn't just his touch, but his complete lack of ideas of what to do once he had it. We must have better options for the bench, surely???

ie when Ward eventuaslly scored Pav should have laid it off for Ifill who made a great run. Somewhat covered up by the fact that we scored but he took the really difficult option passing to Ward. Also last week one point sticks in mind when he fannied around and messed up when the obvious pass was to Ifill, who you could clearly hear say "For f**ks sake Pav just pass the f**king ball" He is a knob... a long time ago I thought he may have had some talent.... now little more than an oxygen thief!

Completely agree...but it will never happen. Brown will never be dropped...EVER

I reckon Sanchez will be off. There were talks about re-signing Muscat and Sanchez quite a while ago....we have since re-signed Muscat but it has gone real quiet with Sanchez. He is a quality player but is NOT a winger. It would be a real shame if he left because he could have become that elusive playmaker we have all be hoping to see one day. He also younger than most of the team IMO the sort of player you could build your attack around for several years.

I don't really get your criticism. i don't say Pav had a great game but he did the right thing in that situation. He was sent well clear, got a shot off, reacted quickly to have another crack - still no other Nix player in the picture - paused, used his noggin and, correctly in my view, laid if off to the man who had by far the better sight at goal.

Yes he did well to lay the ball off to Ward, but that was a far more difficult ball than a simple pass to Ifill. Look at the replay and see the run he made.  Maybe not the worst instance of his poor decision making, but for me, he is simply adding very little to the side, and to be honest is showing no signs of being a player who will eventually add something to the side.

So assisting a goal is not contributing to the side?
Permalink Permalink
about 14 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
he would be unlikely to be credited an assist for that. And as I said, he is contributing very little to the side. I did not say that he is not contributing to the side
Permalink Permalink

Perhaps. But by that same token, there's a few players who contribute just as much (or as little) and have much more time on the pitch than Pav. Are they oxygen thiefs too?

I have never seen the fascination with Bertos and think he is either past or very nearly approaching his use by date At times i would have gladly seen him swapped for Pav. While he has not had "long term oppotunities" to get on the pitch, He has trained and played with the squad for 2 seasons now, has had some reasonable game time and I think he unfrtunately has not progressed beyond being a nutter with pace.

Haha, now I disagree with your view on Bertos too!

Will leave that one for another time though.

Ok, I wouldn't go so far as to say he's a waste of oxygen. But surely you've got to agree that he really hasn't offered anything much playing wise this season (other than a couple of admittedly handy goals but in a game that was already won). Who would you suggest has contributed less? Downey? Tsattalios?
Edit - sorry ignore me... just found discussion about this elsewhere

Sanchez is completely wasted on the left. He did so well for us in the first part of the season in the centre, and I really don't understand why he is being wasted out wide - and why Tim Brown has such a lock on central midfield (or central seagull).

I do agree, the problem has arisen since Ifill has returned from injury and rather than playing on the wing, he has been playing up front and Ricki is still trying to squeeze Brown, Greenacre and Sanchez into the squad and has seen Sanchez shifted to the wing. To create space for Sanchez could be Ifill shifting to the wing or one of Brown or Greenacre dropped for someone more adept on the wing and Sanchez shifts more centrally.

Pav is a plank.
Id sooner we play the bench itself.

As an amateur player myself with a certain amount of talent in my younger days, I look at Pav and just think someones trying to kidding me that he is a pro footballer?
