Mike Ashley would have done better.

Can't sell to a-leauge players.  Plus his contract is up.

How exactly are you meant to sell a player you don't own?

I'm incredibly grateful to you for the correction.  There are, after all, no other interested parties and the club never had an opportunity to offer Marco an extension until now.  I'm sure that you saw my grovelling apology to aitkenmike for my putting about utter nonsense upthread, so please understand that I sincerely appreciate the further correction.  Your genius and profundity is, perhaps, second to his, but this should in no way detract from our admiration.

You're a f**kwit.

2, It says the Phoenix have offered as much or more than anyone else.
3, Were they meant to re-sign him when he had played 30 seconds of A-League football and was recovering from ankle surgery that may never have properly heeled?

Phew thread back on target opportunity! Thanks HN, it's a nice abbreviated version on how it really is.

How many times do I have to admit I'm wrong?  You're right.  There was no time between Rojas' recovery from injury and now.  Basically, these things happened simultaneously.

Mike Ashley would have done better.
And how would they do this? Force him to sign a new contract so we can sell him? Or sign every 17 unproven youth player with some possible potential to 5-7 year contracts?

Wow. When you put it like that, it's obvious that there was no alternative. I retract, sir. Thank you for sharing your god-like wisdom. I can tell from your remarkable knowledge about football that; if you were managing the Phoenix, we would win the European Champions League every year, if you were the owner, we would be the richest club in the world, if you were part of the playing staff, you would be the player of the century. Once again, thank you, thank you, thank you for explaining my errors.

I'm confused . You were the one claiming that the management was basically incompetent to let him go on a free transfer. I'm just wondering how exactly you felt the club could have prevented this situation from being a possibility?

Don't forget, the club wanted to start talks with him about halfway through the season, but he and his agent said they wanted to negotiate once the season was over.

OK.  I've managed to turn the sarcasm off.

I don't think that Marco leaving on a free is a catastrophe that reveals the fundamental weaknesses of the Phoenix.  On the contrary, it suggests that the club could become a selling club and consolidate its finances on that basis - so long as the next Marco Rojas (or next next Kosta?) is actually sold off.

It took Richardinho a whole season of mediocrity to get booed. MR will get at least that, I'm sure.

Nope. I can't say what he told me, or who he got it from (which trust me, is f**king killing me), but apparently he won't leave.
I'm not sold by it either to be honest, but hopefully he's right.

I will be RAGING if he leaves. We would be really struggling next season if he does because I do not believe we could get anyone better. Ifill and Greenacre aren't getting any younger either.

I cannot for the life of me see why he would want to move to another A-League team at this stage when he's basically a guaranteed starter for Phoenix.

Perhaps someone in the know can enlighten us to any behind-the-scenes problems, other than the cashflow situation?

Anyone who says that now is kidding themselves, no matter how much of an insider they are. I don't think there's any real reason for such surprise either, it's been quite clear for a while that he isn't going to stay. He's just a small kid who's gone and got a big head.

The Keeper who was robbed for keeper of the season.  Plays at Gold Coast behind an average defense and is superb.  But it's okay.  You've got Petkovic.

Come on. He was looking to be one of the top earners, with aspirations to play at a higher level in the next few years, is he really THAT worried about his Kiwisaver?!

How were we supposed to force him to sign for us? Your acting like we've only been trying to sign him up in the last few days, but melbourne jumped in ahead of us. Simply not true.

So we should have signed an unproven teenager up to a multi year deal in the first place just in case some club comes in wanting to pay a transfer fee for him? Thats the only way what you're suggesting could have happened.

SIgning unproven teenagers to multi-year deals in a league with a squad size and salary cap is NOT good business.
