I think aside from the football aspect of the transaction (eg promoting the game, etc) the Councils investment in bring Becks to Wellington will stack up financially. I think the quote from Kerry Prendergast was that they expect a return of 20x the investment for them to put the money up.

best start working on posh spice chants hahahahahahahahah i know there must be millions for evey team in the premiership.

i feel the game will be ridiculously over priced, YF/phoenix members should get heavily discounted tickets. $5 i reckon

whats the bet some group of tw@ts will ruin the whole event by bagging Becks and co for the whole game....awesome, a great way to "entice" other teams to come down to this part of the world.

some stuff to ponder....

a) theres no points on the line in this one, purely exhibition, make it a carnival atmosphere
b) check the stats, he's a great footballer (love him or hate him, check the f***** stats)
c) don't judge a man by his wife (unless however she happens to be Eva Longoria) and beside, Posh won't even be here anyways (and don't lie you lot, you'd lay it down on her in a heartbeat)

I will pay through the nose to watch David Beckham play 55 minutes or whatever, i'd pay through the nose to watch Gary "Long Ball, Shorts Up" Neville play.........these guys are the "heroes" that so many of our kids in NZ look up to and get up in the early hours of the morning to watch on overpriced satellite TV (different thread required)......lets make it an enjoyable day for them.....

And as for the council "forking out" - lets just be thankful that the council are even looking "our" way when it comes to funding. Would you rather the club fork out more? get a grip FFS.

Its nothing to do with the council looking "our way" ,its about an increasingly desperate  mayor trying to jump on a popular bandwagon a few weeks out from an election ,ever get the feeling you are being manipulated!!

A rates inquiry sparked by a ratepayer backlash is expected to urge local bodies to get back to basics (Source Dom Post today page A 2)

I read in the Dompost today the funding for it will only come from commercial rates - So I don't think that its that big a deal the are expecting 20 dollars back for everyone they spend. However I don't like the fact the club will cover and losses....

Its a gamble ,just look at the Tiger Woods  Paraparaumu fiasco !and i can still see no justification for not disclosing how much money they are going to spend .
Also i am a commercial rate payer as well as a domestic one !

By the same token, look at the V8's or Rally New Zealand in hamilton.

There will be 10's of thousands in the Waikato for both events.  This weekend from all over the world this week for the rally.  Inspired coucnile leadership kept two important NZ sports events here.

Can't believe we'd try and bash people for investing in brining a high profile event to the city to increase interest in the sport and the Phoenix.

How's my driving? - Whine here

Im not bashing people just looking for more disclosure and openness from the mayor on  A) what the exact benefits will be in funding a promotion for what is basically a self promoting juggernaut ie the Posh and Becks show and
B)how much money they are actually going to give them!
Don't get me wrong im just asking whether people do actually think this is the sort  business a local council should be involving its self in.I have no problem with exhibition football everyone has fun when the circus comes to town ,i  just personally think it is an inappropriate use of council  funds !

I think that if they make a good weekend of this - it could be alot like the sevens same carnival atmosphere etc. Esp if people make an effort to dress up- every one in asile 22 for example could be supporting a mustache and some sideburns - take the retro ricki theme a bit further. The only problem i can see is the fact that the game is sceduled for a sunday. I think it would make alot more sense for a saturday that way we could continue the party right into the night!

the sevens atmosphere is what the punters want, alot of the casual fans we need to pick up to make this work will come to the games because of the atmosphere at the ring of firel not because good football is being played. If we want the casual fan to buy season memberships and get behind the team  we need to give the games a carnival atmoshphere, its the most noticable difference from rugby games.

Have to agree ,far to contrived !
One of the saddest things ive seen was  a face paint and  coloured   wig set on sale at the Warehouse during sevens week!how safe and unimaginative is that  !!

football is atmosphere it doesn't need or want a fancy dress box (save that for kindy or Madhouse!) (Go Madhouse, you're organic!)

All the media quotes from rugby watchers and jo/anne public said they couldn't believe the atmosphere and excitment - and that didn't need any moustaches, f'ing togas or any other 7's bullsit,

the 7's games are a distraction for the people who like to dress up

the game on the pitch is what counts - and the noise the fans make coz they care - not coz they fancy themselves in a blue wig and high heels!

Please, please, please no rugby Sevens type dressing up!

Do we want visiting teams (and media coverage) to think our hardcore supporters are a bunch of teletubbies, smurfs, angels, and cross-dressers?

Well, to be honest I don't wish to get on the ratepayers'  bandwagon over this.  Perhaps the key thing here is not how much is going to be paid out.  It's not even really an issue of transparency.  Instead, it is simply publicity for the Phoenix and for the love of football itself.  I can't see how that could be a wrong motive.  To get fans (albeit Beckham fans) into the Ring of Fire is the best way to show them how great it is to be at a football game.  So, they'll come back for the Phoenix - we all know how contagious yellow fever is!  I think that it's important to keep the big games in NZ, and more importantly in Wellington - what a great way for the millions of overseas viewers (and the key NZ viewers) to see our boys in action!  Save the council bashing for another code, yeah?

My love of football is completely undiminished but my lack of love for a profligate local council who will  not even tell us how much money they are going to spend on bringing Becks the Galaxy and his missus down here  also shows no sign of waning!!
Its a council who has a committee some of whom are not even elected who have a ten minute meeting and then dip into council coffers and secretly give out council/rates money to high risk entertainment ventures!
Its  three weeks out from an election ,Prendergast has spotted a euphoric wave on the horizon in the shape of The Phoenix football club  and its fans and  like any politician she is instinctively opportunist, manipulative and desperate, she can also  can smell a juicy bit of publicity from miles away !!
iI think we are being had on this one

ok i am a phoenix fan and will try to outchant my previous games effort.

I DONT CARE IF ITS BEX or ANYONE, he will walk into our stadium and when he does i will do my best(within NZ standards, i understand we are not in greece) to show him he is not welcome. THAT MEANS chanst about his wife are totally on the cards. we should chant somthing along the lines of "posh is a slapper, when shes shagging bekham shes thinking of clebo!!!!" needs work but you get the idea.

please can you rugby fans not ruin our team by dressing up etc. Its good some of you enjoyed the game but please realise that its football not 7s or union.

I'm not sure if anyone else has posted these comments yet, so here goes. The fact that the LA Galaxy are playing the Wellington Phoenix is huge publicity wise for Wellington and NZ. This game will be televised in the USA and god knows how many more countries around the world. The idea that a NZ football franchise can compete at that level is nothing but mind boggling. This opportunity should be taken with open arms. I don't personally care how much the council spend on promoting this event(and that so far is all they have committed funds to). The hotel and hospitality industry in wellington will make a fortune from people traveling to the city from outside the region. There is no way that this can be spun negatively. I don't hear people complaining about how much money the council spends on the Wearable art shows and that is significantly higher than what they would be expected to pay for the Galaxy coming to town. The timing may seem significant if you are a conspiracy theorist, but you would be naive to think that anyone from retailers and publicans to politicians wont try and milk this opportunity for all it is worth. Thats human nature. I'm sure the Phoenix management are not organizing this for purely altruistic reasons. They have something significant to gain.

Im dry retching already at the thought of Prendergast and Posh holding up a Phoenix scarf on the front page of the Dom Post.
Prendergast is so obviously jumping on the bandwagon for political gain and the means of doing this is by secretly spending other peoples money ,do you agree with the lack of disclosure Uber?
One of the richest sportsmen on the planet will play football for a club owned by one of the richest men in Wellington and heres the punch line the council are going to help pay for it ,hilarious
Hope people will find the 30% rates increase thats on the cards as easy to swallow as this  and as a side issue do you think the council should be turning down funding for events like the dragon boating festival but still find money for Beckham and co which one benefits the community more in the long run ?

I don't see what the big deal is with revealing how much will be spent. If i remember correctly from the dom post article it was something to do with the council not wanting another city to "outbid" them please correct me if i'm wrong. This doesn't seem like a valid excuse because it would be a kick in the face from terry and co to all the wellington fans and I doubt he would doom the phoenix just to make a quick buck. I'm all for council funding but it should be transparent otherwise is the council really representing us...

Raising a Profile / increasing interest requires sustainability. While I see this as another tick in Prenderghastly's 'events capital' strategy I am still not convinced such longevity will be brought to the Phoenix.

But I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

I'm still worried that the galaxy have bitten off more than they could chew by bringing in Beckham, they are forced to fly over America and the rest of the world to play meaningless friendlies to pay his wages, they are really struggling in the MLS and I wonder whether the team would really be up for a game against the phoenix, a friendly played at walking pace after a huge amount of hype could really be damaging for the Phoenix and I think they need some guarantees over the rest of the team and the level of performance before it goes ahead.
