A new import rule is being set up in Asian football which the A-league is part of and therby the Nix. Essentially if I read this right this rule  allows extra imports if they are Asian in Asian football leagues ........Interesting if players like Song from Scum could be imported and not counted as an import ....

+1 rule for foreigners in AFC

From correspondents in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

October 30, 2008 NEXT season's revamped and lucrative Asian Champions League will introduce a 3+1 rule for foreign players, while the final will be played in Japan.

The Asian Football Confederation said it had been decided to allow each ACL team to field a maximum of four foreign players, one of whom must be from an Asian country.

Japan's J-League is introducing a similar system next season, and Asian football's governing body is pushing other member associations to follow suit.

"I would love to see a Saudi player playing in Korea and a Korean playing in Saudi Arabia,'' said AFC president Mohamed Bin Hammam.

"By implementing this 3+1 rule, we are giving more chances for Asian players to play for other Asian clubs.''

The AFC also chose Japan as the host for the 2009 final, which will be played at a neutral venue for the first time.

Japan was selected because of its "ability to promote the event and arouse regional interest''.

On Tuesday, the AFC announced the prize money for next season's revamped Champions League had been massively increased to $US14 million ($A20.97 million).

The total budget for 2009 is $US20 million ($A29.96 million), dwarfing the $US4 million available for this year's event.

Of that, 70 percent is dedicated to prizemoney and incentives.

But strict new criteria has been put in place for teams to participate in an effort to raise standards.

Newcastle Jets and Central Coast will represent the A-League in next year's tournament.

The way I read it is that at this stage, it only applies to the Champions' League. It would be ridiculous for CCM or Newcastle to hire a 4th import just for ACL matches next season.

It makes sense for leagues that have a restriction on imports, such as A-League, to adopt a similar rule.

It's not just the champions league. Did I read in a news article or another thread, some current A-League players are now being targetted by J-League clubs, e.g. Jade North and a couple of keepers.

A shame NZ players would not be included as we are sadly not part of the AFC, as much as I like having two very strong keepers I'd also be happy to see one of them earning a decent wedge in the J-League and both of them therefore getting regular game time.

Yeah but A-League teams are allowed 4 imports this season as it is, 5 next year I believe (with the expansion teams coming in). All this new rule means is that matchday ACL squads can have the existing three foreigners, plus one other Asian player. So Newcastle can have Song playing, as well as Hakannon, Zura and some other foreigner.

So the A-League's imports rule is quite lenient compared to other Asian countries.
