The home games for the Phoenix in the pre-season cup will be played in NZ, but not in Wellington. Palmy and Napier I think.

Definitely NZ and the draw on the website says Wellington, but no
confirmed ground. Early rumour said Napier and Palmy but
since then reports say the Basin.

I don't know why FFA don't market this tournament a bit better. It
is crying out for a better title and they ought to make it like the
English League Cup, with therefore a bit more prestige attached to
it. At the moment it just comes across as insignificant when, with
a bit of thought, it could become a more prestigious tournament in
its own right.

One Basin, one QE II then...
WELLINGTON Phoenix FC will play its first
games on home soil when the club takes part in the 2007 Hyundai
A-League Pre-Season Cup fixtures at the Basin Reserve in the
capital and QEII Park in Christchurch in July. The Phoenix play
their first Pre-Season Cup match against the Central Coast Mariners
at Bluetongue Stadium in Gosford on Saturday, July 14, before
returning home to take on Hyundai A-League big guns Sydney FC at
the Basin Reserve in Wellington at 2pm on Sunday, July 22.
The team then heads to QEII Park in Christchurch for its final cup group stage match against the Queensland Roar on Friday, July 27, with kickoff at 7pm.
Phoenix commercial and operations manager Ian Rogers said the club was thrilled to be able to play its first competitive home game at the Basin Reserve.
The Basin is an iconic Wellington sportsground and to play our first game there reflects (club owner) Terry Serepisos passion for the capital and for football.
But in saying that, the game in Christchurch is also an indication of our desire to grow the profile of the club and the Hyundai A-League throughout the country.
The two games are going to be community events for football, an opportunity for fans to find about things such as season tickets and other Phoenix information. It will also be a chance for us to build links with local clubs.
The Phoenix will build up for the 2007 Pre-Season Cup with four inter-squad games planned in Wellington (Newtown Park), Upper Hutt, Porirua and the Wairarapa.
The Hyundai A-League season begins on August 24.

Agree with your concept, but let's shy away from League cup
comparisons!! That's the definition of meaningless!!
Problem is, now that you can play non-signed players in it
it's going to have even more of a trial feel.

Cant wait sounds like an exciting concept. Sydney Fc should be a
good game.

Is QEII Jade Stadium or a different ground?

No QEII is smaller, and better for football. Hosted a recent
All Whites match against Malaysia which got about 13,000 so we've
got to hope for someting similar. No news on tickets as yet
but we'll put all the information we get up as soon as we get it.
Chch YF members, you've officially got two months to start
firing it up!!

This game on the 27th July then fly up for the opening
A-League game on the 26th August... Sounds like a decent couple of
months coming up for me.

Hate to be pedantic, but it was 10 800 at that match. Absolutely brilliant atmosphere there. It's the biggest football game I have ever been to. I went ballistic when Old netted to make it 1-0 to the All Whites.

All us Christchurch phoenix fans have to bring our mates along to
the game on the 27th of July to make it as big as possible.
Hopefully there will actually be advertising this time! When the
All Whites came to Christchurch there was almost no advertising and
we managed to get in excess of 10 000, so imagine how many fans we
could get along if we do some proper advertising. I hope the team
actually comes down this time (after last year's chinnanagins with
the Knights when they decided not to because they had to get used
to their home ground or something).
About advertising, I don't know if you need a permit or anything to advertise, but we should just get pieces of paper saying who's playing, where, what time, and price (and the yellowfever logo if there is one) - then laminate the paper and attach it to fences and stuff.
Anybody got any ideas as to how much money the tickets will cost to the pre-season cup (which they should re-name the FFA Cup)

there are certain places where you can and can't advertise. eg: the
fences around Deans Ave & Moorehouse Ave which are usually
covered in advertising need a permit i think. you may also need
clearance from the club/FFA.......
all it takes is a few of us going into/emailing/faxing places like service stations, dairies, fish n chip shops etc around Chch trying to get an A4 sheet put up in the window stating who, what, when & where.
it would be nice to get the highschools & clubs around town involved in promoting & attending. put up a few posters in club rooms, school corridors, in newsletters etc and *hopefully* the crowds will come.

Has there been anything in the press about ticket prices for the
pre-season cup?
Several of the guys at my game today were saying they had read
it was $10 for adults and kids free. I'm not sure were that got
that info from as I'm sure there's been nothing on here about these
prices that I recall seeing.

My missus works for the 'Nix and I feed her lots of the great ideas
surfacing on YF........I'll pass on your comments and ensure the
Chch game gets great exposure.
They are after a real nationwide support base hence taking an
early game to the South Island at the earliest chance they
get.
Fairly certain both games at the Basin and in Chch will
be $10 adults and kids free.

Sweet. What's your wife's job at the Phoenix? And do 16year olds
count as kids?
She's not my wife yet, cos she hasn't asked.....
She's involved with their marketing, I'll find out what age
they class as kids but I doubt 16 would be - most
sports/games/events are around the under 10's or 12's these days
from what I've seen.

mates!!!!! ill get my arse into gear for the uni club to get
funding in sh*t, ill make a few banners up and try and get a decent
possy of 50 odd, good thing about the basin is the chaps who dont
want to pay can jump the fence. Itl be mad...any pre season
gatherings to get some chant lists?? perhaps another forum

It will be $10 per adult for Basin and for QEII park games - under
16's classed as kids and are in free at pre-season cup games.
Lets fill the bank at the basin at least and show the rest of
Welli just how many people are behind the Nix.
If the Thistle is our home game boozer, where shall we meet to
grab a few pints prior to the Basin game....?
The Cambridge perhaps.....?

Gunner, I would love to play against you mate 'cos you are far to honest.
Play to the refs' whistle (as in you try to get in for free until you get pinged at the gate)! and don't tell your mother I told you that.

Don't worry mate, Ol' Lizzy (my mother) shall be none-the-wiser about your somewhat cheap suggestion. And na, I'm honest, I will pay for my ticket. Besides, the money is going towards the Phoenix (at least I think it is anyway).

Pleased to hear that. I really wasn't suggesting anything dodgy -
just checking on your moral fiber (seeing as you support the mighty
Arse). See you at the game. Ronaldoknow2007-05-31 22:45:05
