Before version 2 of the a-league the Knights planned to have an
away pre-season friendly game versus Hawkes Bay (the NZFC team).
The Knights then pulled out of the friendly using some pathetic
excuse like "the players need to get used to their own pitch". I
was wondering if anybody knew if the phoenix were planning to have
any pre-season friendly's (not the pre-season cup). If they did
have some away games vs NZFC opponents before the pre-season cup
then that could build support around the country.
What do you people think???

yeah have games aorund the country, ill go to the canterbury game

Yeah would be a good way to get support

Yeah, good practice too, the more games they can play together as a
team before the start of the A-league the better, So that most of
the team will be able to work well with the style of play that the
South americans will bring....I'm all for local friendly games.

Wont many of the NZFC players still be with their clubs?
They would be better off looking to play say a Wellington
combined club selection made up of Wellington players that were
available when there was no play for them ie: on Chatham Cup
weekend after Olympic and Lower Hutt are knocked out (just an
example).
A dog with a bone :)

You could be right - the relationship between Mick Waitt and others
involved in football may see Ricki decide to keep the froiendlies
in the Wellington/Manawatu region.

Just play a friendly with Team Wellington first! Handy!

Play friendlies against top local central league clubs such
as, Miramar Rangers, Western Suburbs, Wellington Olympic &
Lower Hutt City maybe.. just to get the boys to gell
together & get there, get some games together before the
season kicks off.

this is the normal practice. melbourne and most a-league teams play
with local football teams before the pre-season comp. theres no
doubt the pheonix will do the same, especially to get the new team
together.

I thought I read Mark Chote the new Team Wellington chairman
was going to make contact with the Phoenix and try to arrange
training between the two clubs.
It would be nice to see Team Wellington play some of
their home games as the curtain raiser to the Phoenix

I think there should a reserve comp
Permalink
Yeah that would be great but I don't think it would be useful at
this time..In the future maybe when the clubs ave become more
stable and ave enough money to spend on more players so that there
can be a reserve squads.

I would love to see WP play Perth in a pre-season game. It would be
a really good run for the boys and an easy win too.
I think pre season games against local teams, that might have
give you a good game, wouold be a fantastic idea.

Venue: Basin, Teams: Phoenix V Team Wellington - sorted
When Hibs, went up, to win the Scottish Cup - I wisnae there - furfuxake!

I take it Ginger Eejit isn't just a clever nickname ....
TW got owned by Manawatu, ACFC and Canterbury this season -
Phoenix would wipe the floor with them - needs to be a challenge -
one of the top 3 - be a good trial for Totoriri to play against the
Phoenix back 4.

Basin would be the best venue no doubt! But Team Wellington. i dno.
Maby The NZFC 11 vs Phoenix. That way phoenix can see who steps up
for the nzfc team and maby they could become potential signings.
Also just have a 5 dollar entry fee. Nothing high. This will bring
in the crowd and hopefully this would continue when they play at
westpac

The reason I suggest it is to build the hype and excitement in Wellington for the Phoenix, isn't really going to do much for the footballing people in Wellington, if Phoenix go down to ChCh to play a friendly down there.

I was taking the piss. Dont think team Wellington would a gree to
that sort of match. Unless they played 4th stringers.

ye let nzfc 11 play the phoenix great oppurtunity to play for a spot in the phoenix side i rekon. Surely Raf de Gregorio is in the mind of Herbert as a bench centre midfielder hes better then Christie neday.
Be good to have them go against the top NZFC teams to see how they
compare to them.

You rection DeGregorio...nah i rection hell get Raf a pre-contract
let him 'sober' up in Central league, get his fitness and stamina
back then next year bring him in.

I reckon an invitation game against Manawatu or Auckland City at
Newtown Park would be a goer. Personally I'd like to see YHM play
here so we (and Ricki Jervais. .. Herbet) can get a look at
Totori.
Not a bad ground for this kind of match, and seeing as
it's "invitaiton" would be the perfect size (stadium would be
far too big, and Rugby is on at the moment so grass would be a
sucky length). Good chance for us YF lads to get our singing voices
into running order.

ye tru good point. And ye Totoris all good but the rest of the
teams sh*te and he prob wont get much ball. How about the NZFC 11.
Best of the best! That has to be the best!

Obvious problem lads. The Phoenix first pre-season game is
mid-July. NZFC squads don't even have to be finalised until
October.
Just about every NZFC player by the end of the month will be at a winter club who are unlikely to release them for a Pre-Season friendly against us.
More likely to see them play the U-20's before they head for Canada I imagine.

There will definitely be a pre-season game in Palmy against
Manawatu....our first roadtrip!!! And possibly one in the
Hawkes Bay or the Naki - unconfirmed who against.....
They are keen to generate support all around NZ with a very strong base in Welli.....
