YF + Pania of the reef statue = something that will end in tears.

But I'd be up for Napier.

Kinda agree with Oska - Christchurch has had at least one Phoenix match every year since inception. Last season was two, with the HAFH and pre-season. It's certainly been successful but if we have to share the love, we should do it properly. I think it's about time Auckland got a pre-season match, also to gauge interest towards a HAFH match there in 2011-12. The Phoenix have gotten to the point where we can't really be compared with the Auckland failures, so perhaps it won't be an issue of "Why should we go see a team that sucks when we didn't watch our own team that sucked?"

I've always suggested Napier get a match even though I've never been to MacLean Park, and as a sorta-local I agree Rotorua would be a good option. I love the stadium there, close to Auckland/Hamilton/Tauranga, and as a personal choice it's close to my parents so I'll be sussed. The Kingz played there back in the day - anyone know how successful that was?

I think it can't hurt to take the pre-season games to places like Napier or Rotorua. Hamilton could be a go. Taking the Black Caps to different venues has been a success over the years, in my opinion. The more people from around the country who see the team play the better. They will buy merchandise, and make the trip down to Wellington for big games. Share the love, Wellington! And I'm sure those of us non-Wellingtonians will let you crash on the couch if there's a game played nearby! (Although I don't expect a Nix game near Thames anytime soon.)

I remember going to that match... don't recall the exact crowd but it wasn't too bad if I remember.

Rotovegas would be mean. If they went to Queenstown they can do it up there. Better location means better crowds too I would think.

But I agree they should give these places preseason games before considering giving them season games. Do not want a flop. And there should be no more than two matches a season away, and not at the business end of the season.

Like the Hamilton idea
- Central to the whole upper North Island - likely to get New Plymouth, Tauranga, Hawkes Bay fans there
- Close enough to Mordor to get those up there down for a match (hour and a half or so drive ain't that orrible)
- Not sure what the local Football support is like but may get a fair few out

I am not a Wellingtonian but I think one regular HAL in Christchurch is enough, as for the rest perhaps for pre-season.

I'm thinking a preseason beach football game at Whangamata Beach could be a good idea...

Queenstown was good, although they needed to start earlier so the game wasn't still going when the sun went down. The Ring of Fire can get cold, but it'stoastie compared to what Q'town was like for most of the second half.

Did you go to the game?

It was a bit chili in the second half, I must agree and we scored a great structured goal finished off by Party all the time, but the dissapointing thing IMO was that only just over 2000 people turned up to the game, which for a once a season thing it was rather dissapointing.

IMO, 3 home away from home games a season.

One game each in Christchurch and Auckland

One game in another city (different each season). E.g. Rotovegas, Hamiltron etc..

During the season? I don't think Wellingtonians will like that! I think before they should play new cities in pre-season matches before the play there during the season. In the end, they are a Wellington club, and the people and the city have helped make them who they are today. I'm doubtful they could have succeeded like they have, and not just on the field, if they were in a different city. So Wellington should have all the season games. Preseason games should be all on the road, and should be well marketed. Hopefully those games would draw big crowds. Perhaps tickets to preseason games should also provide a discount to season games, to encourage out-of-towners to come down to Wellington.

Playing regional sides would be a pretty cool idea, A New Zealand Pre-Season tour. Couldn't happen this year due to the world cup etc, but for future years...

Good call, so hopefully NO more Ring of Dirt! Napier might be the best call, very strong football area.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

At least GCU might get some gatetaking money back compared to a home game in Gold Coast. [a sad and sorry chapter that is still there next season]

i think the nix should come back to asia to do a preseason tour like they did last year. maybe come to japan this time though, play some j-league teams or 2nd devision teams. i know for 1 i would go watch

but also doing preseason tours to asia could also help our position with the AFC

Calling all fans in Japan, come down and support the mighty nix in Osaka

McLean Park in Napier would definitely offer a better location than what Palmerston was. Clear view of the field, good surface, reasonable population base with the twin cities and only 4 hours from Wellington.

HB United aren't very well supported though and not sure if that would transfer to a poor crowd or not.

I would totally come to a Nix game at Eden Park - or Mt Smart - and bring all my friends. But I don't have a car (transplanted Wellingtonian, never needed one at home and can't afford one now), so getting out to Albania would be a bitch coupled with a hassle coupled with a "screw you North Shore".Doloras2010-03-25 15:39:15

If they have a game at Harbour you can all crash at my parents' place on the shore. I haven't asked them, but I'm sure they'll be fine with it!

Last Knights game, Junior News and I stayed at the motel over the hill.  Quite toasted by the time I got back from the game... watched Australian Open tennis until stupidly late.

Memories.
