The game was available online. If you don't have an internet connection that can handle at least the 'standard' connection option that TVNZ offer (they also offer a high quality version, you need to enter the 21st century.

Great article, skills for spotting it.
now that the print media is on to TV1's poor attitude to football coverage, this has become a great opportunity to put public pressure on TVNZ to lift their game in regard to football coverage
The article has comments - cmon folks add your views on that article page - rark this up! (it could pay big dividends in shifting the TVNZ attitude!!)
And get on the TV1 website and give them a serve for not showing the Ferns game!
the various media are starting to move towards football, let's take the ball that Stuff sports has played into our feet and slam it into the TVNZ goal!!
one day TV1 will be football-friendly let's help them get there quickly (it's for their own good

actually my internet connection (telstra) has been down for the last two days. plus, i dont particularly watching football on my laptop.
TVNZ played reruns of Border Patrol ahead of NZ v Olympic hosts at the Olympic stadium on tv1 last night. THat's attrocious.

it is TV 1 that need to enter the 21st century
if you want football to be only for the younger more well off memebers of society then that's your call
but i want all New Zealanders to be able to see their national teams play football at the Olympics
TVNZ could have easily fulfilled its obligations as an inclusive state broadcaster but it didn't - football fans need to encourage TVNZ to lift its game

Well I'd much rather the game was available online than their 'free'view channel, that's for sure.
The high quality stream is actually very good and I recommend it (to those above me not on dial-up).

Having sent my angry letter to TVNZ yesterday expressing my disappiotment and questioning the reasoning for the lack of free-to-air coverage, I was told that:
"TV ONE's coverage of the Games is not starting until the traditional Opening Ceremony on Aug 8. From that point NZ's football teams will be reflected into the overall coverage of the Games on TV ONE, as well as on Sport Extra and Online."
Considering the timing of the matches and lack of clash with the 'priority' programming; One News, Coronation Street, etc, I think it is massively disappointing that there was no mainstream coverage and do not have high expectations for adequate football coverage on TV One for the remaining matches.
I must now take comfort in that TVNZ have "passed on my comments". I would encourage everyone else to express any disappointment and hopefully they'll spend $10,000 putting a report together and get it sorted by the time we get to London in 2012....

The superb athletes that make up the Football Ferns have every right to feel disapppointed and let down by TV 1.
Our Womens'team effectively opened the Olympics for New Zelanders. They performed brillianlty against a top ten team in the world's most popular sport and (wait for it..) TV 1 showed reruns of Border Patrol!
It is interesting that, unlike TV 1, TV 3 has shown a willingness to cover a range of sports. Their coverage of the Phoenix has been excellent. Our state broadcaster should follow TV 3's inclusive attitude.
Doesn't TVNZ have a formal obligation to support inclusiveness in our society?
I would expect that the Minister of Broadcasting is aware that women have the vote. I expect the Minister of Broadcasting is aware that the number of football fans in the country is considerably larger than the number of avid watchers of Border Patrol.
I believe that TVNZ's programmers have let the people of New Zealand down, not just by this decision but by the head-in-the-sand ignorance and arrogance that it displays.
Get into the 21st century TV1! <<
edit - just relaised (thnx News) that china and japan are different countries

Maybe they have an automatic filter on posts containing 'TV3'?

i hope people take the time to follow the link and write a quick complaint - its the only way we are ever going to increase TVNZ awareness of the number of people who would have liked to watch both games and the amount of people who follow football in nz.
Get in behind it.

Well for me, the bottom line is that there were no clashes with anything else, so there is really no reason to not play the game last night (not sure about the women's game as I had a major assignment due the next day and had already taken a few hours off to go to the RoF). They move regular (non-rerun) programmes for things all the time, so other than being a lame excuse for a national broadcaster, I just don't see any reason for them to not have played the game. Even if football isn't rugby or racing, the fact of the matter is, that it is NZ at the Olympics, and all sports, including football, should be getting the most exposure wherever possible. Border Control or whatever it was, I'm sure wouldn't have been missed by many last night if it was played at a later date.
It goes back to the earlier debate this year of TVNZ wanting the rights to broadcast NZ sports free-to air. Well that's all well and good provided you actually get to see the sport...and that is why we have SKY. What's the point having the rights to broadcast when you're not going to broadcast anyway? They may as well hand the 'left overs' to SKY in that case. Anyhow that's my rant.

It's not only football fans suffering/unhappy - http://www.stuff.co.nz/4650040a26500.html.
The rowers are on ATM but they're not being covered. There aren't any New Zealanders being covered at present (on TV 1 and online). Lame.

Hang on, I kind of take that back. They've just cut back to the peloton in the cycling and Julian Dean is there. But still, nothing on the other online channels.

Now if it had been the Rugby 7's team playing at the Olympics, you would have had it covered on the Internet, On TVNZ Sports, TV1, TV2 (delayed coverage) etc etc.
Some attitudes never change at TVNZ. that's what makes Sky's decision to show last Wednesdays game "Live" an exceptionally good one. They know a good thing when they are on to one.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!
