Question to YF re Phoenix into the future

Assuming this to be a write off given the lead into the season.

Given the next media deal will be out within twelve months, were do the Nix go.

From an interested outsider, Auckland failed, partly because of stadium  location and partly because poor management.

The Phoenix have succeeded, in getting backers and the city of Wellington behind them. Moreover the NZ football community seems to be behind the team.

Can that success continue without a change on the park. I read somewhere about twelve months or so ago, the Phoenix attract the lowest away crowds and have the lowset TV rating in Australia. OK OK I assume they rate in NZ

I see the Phoenix I see a great fighting side, who defend with zeal and energy.  Breaking teams down and hitting on the break. Not an unused, nor uncommon system, used by many clubs world over. However I ask aloud will this bring new folk through the gate.

Do the Phoenix need to recruit a player maker and develop the team around that player, then playing a passing game build out from the back etc., to drag more folk through the gate and increase TV ratings.

I watched the game against Heart and wondered aloud if I were a non-hard core rusted on football person, would the style of the Phoenix be enough to drag me through the gate, or keep me coming.

Please dont take this as being overly critical of the Phoenix simply asking  in NZ as we move forward does the style of play count in connecting the Phoenix with the broader football community and then the broader community of Wellington.

The phoenix need to sign a couple of big marquees for 12/13 i think, its time. The goal of reaching the finals by the 3rd season has been fulfilled. The goal now should be to finish in the top 2 on the ladder and win the final.

the minimum should be finals every season. We have long enough off-seasons to sign the right people.

We need to get young lad in who represent us and the public can relate to, while also bringing in foreign quality to get us the wins and to mentor the young up&comers.

Because we have the structures and resources to do this.

Our new owners gave us the distinct impression they will be doing that though J82.

Although I notice Russell still writes media releases, Greenie is still our only assistant to Ricki, we can't score a goal to save ourselves and they are still running the offices out of a corner of the stand at Newtown Park.

Loving the New Dawn.

I was under the impression that the Nix Nine had totally written off this season, their only goal being losing as little money as possible, and then having a good go next year with a marquee etc.

That takes time.

If we are to make the finals every season we'd need a lot more than Ricki and Greenie,  Lee Taylor and almost 20 fit players, plus Nathan doing two jobs and however many posters we can put up around town.

We're in a 10-team league and most of them are better resourced than us and with youth teams.

It's fine to be aspirational and indeed until Terry's mate Ali G failed to materialise (well the end of the last season really), making the finals even winning them was plausible.

This season I'd like us to make the play offs (do able) but if we don't (possible) then at least we play good football (audere est facere and all that).

Obviously you didn't watch us absolutely boss Sydney off the park here in Wellington.

Don't get me wrong as I posted I am not having a go at the Nix's.... I am asking is the manner in which the side normally plays .... which as i said is a system played all over the world by many clubs... is the style of football you play likely to bring the fence sitter's [for want of a better word] tho the gate....

As for SFC and your victory ... it was a good victory but I still don't think you played a flowing game... more hits on the break ...

Like I should talk after Hal 4 & 5 at the Mariners... but my question is I think more simple... if the Nix's played a more open game do you think it would get more tho the gate and connect better to the wider community ... or are results the key and important thing.... most coaches and mangers say the result is the important thing ... better to win in a scrappy game than loose in a free flowing game...

I'm just going to put it out there that a Mariners fan commenting on counter-attack football is delightfully ironic.

Hard News

two things ... first playing the man ... but althrough we may still hit on the break we also push forward ... we are luckly we have Musty he adds a measure to the rest of the team that means when he is on the park we are a totally different side to when he is not... also last season and recently the Mariners have played a reasonably flowing game...

Second it is a simple question as I said not meant with any malise .... it has been long argued in Sydney that the manner in which SFC play affects their crowds... all I asking in the  broader scheme of things what is morwe important in Wellington... style and results ... or results at almost any costs..

We had a huge debate in OZ over Pim our last national coach, with half the football community saying he needed to win with style ... the other half saying win at all cost just make the WC...

Only one team in the league plays a noticeably different style of football than everyone else, and that's Brisbane.

If reading all 28 pages of the Waikato FC thread has taught me anything it is that playing pretty possession football with lots of local youth but losing will definitely draw a lot of positive attention and plenty of fans.aitkenmike2011-12-05 20:38:56
