Does this annoy anyone else? Media, specifically Dimwit Katsanos but others are guilty, always calling them THE Wellington Phoenix. He/they do it with most of the other A League teams, THE Queensland Roar, THE Perth Glory etc etc.
Why? It's not  THE Glasgow Rangers, or THE Blackburn Rovers, or THE Real Madrid. So why do they have to call our team THE Wellington Phoenix? It's not their name, so stop it, you jumped up little excuse for a man.

I'm the opposite, it annoys me when people don't use 'The'.  I can't explain why but it just feels wrong without it.

Easy to confuse Phoenix as a singular term rather than a plural. Roar, Glory and Victory are all singular terms, so it must rub off on us.

But I'm with News - I prefer "The Wellington Phoenix", or "The Phoenix" etc. Sounds kinda wrong with out it.

Of course I am, it is my purpose on this planet.
But it still annoys me. It's not their name.
I hate it too when people call one of my favourite bands THE Buzzcocks. It's not their name either, they are just Buzzcocks.

I like the 'The' because it fits and doesn't fit when used with other clubs.

While I'm no English scholar its using the words Wellington and Queensland as a kinda form of possesive adjective and Phoenix and Roar as nouns (usually singular but not always)

The Wellington Phoenix
The brown chair
The large cup
The big bed
The Miami Heat
The LA Lakers
The Queensland Roar
The Dallas Cowboys

Real Madrid doesn't really work. Now if they were THE Real Madrid Stars, then that works.

It also ties into using 'a' and 'the' as definitive and indefintive articles. You don't go to watch a Wellington Phoenix (being definitive use) but you do go to watch a Wellington Phoenix game (indefinite use). Likewise in a role reversal you go to watch the Wellington Phoenix but don't go to watch the Wellington Phoenix game (unless it was defined in conversation)

(Yes I know.... I'm unemployed at the moment, it fills in time)

Amusing comment since your forum name is "TheJam".  At least there's just one Wellington Phoenix but there are a plethora of jams... which one do you mean?  I'm so confused...

It doesn't work either way, it's Spanish (well, Castillan if we are being pedantic).

Real Club de Futbol de Madrid = Royal Football Club of Madrid.

Blame the Sex Pistols and their f*cking t-shirt for that!

I don't like "THE" when it follows "Go!" or "Come on!"

Example: "Come on The Nix" or "Go the All Blacks"

Piss off from these scenarios please, The.

Works for Bay of Plenty in egg chasing - "C'mon the Bay!" or "GO THE BAY!"

But that's because we're "The Bay", not "Bay".

I like "Come on the Nix" (though prefer Come on Phoenix), but yeah, cheering for the All Blacks = fail

The Jam is the band's name, The Wellington Phoenix is not the team's name.

I wholeheartedly agree.

The one I hate the most is C'Mon the Naki. No one in Taranaki refers to it as the Naki. Its every other person outside the province that calls it that. Much like JAFA, they view 'the Naki' as being derogatory.

What is a Naki anyway...

I'm surprised nobody has spotted the key distinction here.

If the team's name is a regular everyday noun that has been hijacked and used as a proper noun, you expect to hear a "the" because that's the default everyday usage and to drop the "the" makes it sound odd to your ear.  For example:

The Phoenix
The Cowboys
The Roar
The Fever

Whereas those team names that are JUST proper nouns and only used as team names don't suffer the same auditory confusion.

United
Madrid
Inter
Sydney

Grammatically speaking though, TheJam, you are correct and there should be no "the".  So we should say "Wellington Phoenix are sh*t" and not "the Wellington Phoenix are sh*t" just the same as "David is a fatty" is correct and "The David is a fatty" is not.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

+1. It's THE Wellington Phoenix because the phoenix is a thing. Thats my interpretation of it anyway. When commentators refer to other teams that are fc It's just "Sydney Fc"

Wierd. I've met tonnes of people from there, they all refer to it as "the 'naki"....

One definition of the word 'the' is, "used to refer to a person, place or thing that is unique (noun)", and the Wellington Phoenix fits snugly into that definition.

Whether I'm right or wrong, though, in some cases it just sounds more fluent with 'the' included.

The new team is announced

"The expansion of the Hyundai A-League to ten teams in only the fifth season of the competition was confirmed today with the official naming of team number 10, the North Queensland Fury."

They will no doubt be called "the Fury"
