Look at Scott Gemmill, ex International and Premiership player and he was an absolute f*****g waste of space when he came out here. (Mind you, I never rated him that highly at any stage!)

Scott Gemmill was always just a premierhip squad player in a ( at the time)very average Everton team and only an international because Scotland were crap at the time.

I was just too polite to say that Dunc.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

By the way, if Richardson is one of the brighest stars in his generation, Englandare in trouble. He is Premiership quality, but not up to it at the top level. And before you say it, his goals were against the USA in a friendly

All that Vinnie could teach them is how to tackle 10-year old kids...

possible suggestion, was thinking about this before and 2 names seemed to pop into my head, first was Harry Kewell, altho admittedly i don't know his situation at Liverpool, or much about him in general, altho that he is Australian which would help. a few years down the track maybe? as i say, could be waaaaay of the mark. also whats the situation with ivan vicelich these days? he playing somewhere? don't know / havent researched, just an idea

I think Vicelich is still toiling somewhere in the nether regions in the Netherlands.

Ugh! The idea of some tired old British nag from yesteryear coming down to the Antipodes to teach the locals how to play doesn't appeal at all. NZ soccer, ie the Phoenix, is doing the right thing by looking to other countries like Brazil for footballing talent.  We need to get out of that stolid, porridgy British mindset.
I can honestly say that apart from the odd free kick even the 'legendary' Beckham bores the bejesus out of me. And who mentioned Duncan Ferguson? Isn't he already in a rocking chair, sipping a hot toddy with a wee tartan rug draped over his lap?

Simply look what Beckham has done for the profile of football in the states. look what he has done for the Galaxy.Do you really think  that a big name wouldnt do wonders for the profile of the Phoenix?! Come on Fella, Wake up.

If you are looking for an older player with huge talent, who isnt playing anymore, but is still fit enough to get around a field for 90 minutes you should find out what Dennis Bergkamp is doing. Only problem is you would have to drug him to get him on a plane for every away game (just like B A Baracus from the A-Team)

Zidane would be good, if we could get him out of retirement

Combine the elder statesman with masses of experience with the Brasilian abilities...

Rivaldo
Roberto Carlos
Cafu
Ze Roberto
Or, of the less 'fashionable' names, Vampeta, Giovanni and Edilson - not so much overseas experience, but masses of Brasilian league action.

All are still active and will most likely want to play for 'one more year' - the A-League and a relaxed life in New Zealand may appeal to them.

a lot of the players mentioned on here who are still playing, are on wages of about 25,000 pounds per week (Roberto Carlos in Turkey, Fowler at Cardiff, I would guess that Kewell would be on at least double that).

Do people think that we are going to be able to offer $50,000 per week to these guys to match what they are on at the moment?

Beckham has barely been on the park for the Galaxy yet! We need a fit and committed player to help us win the league, not an over-paid tabloid media muppet.

I checked out the Duncan video: impressive but an obvious fake. My Scottish contact reliably informs me that he saw him last Saturday night at a Stirling bingo hall. Won a few quid did the old fella.
Great seeing that footage of him chucking Paul Ince over though. He's worth ten Beckhams for me.

What a waste of space this thread is.

We've got a full line-up of imported players.  We've got a full squad.  We've got a Marquee signed for two years.

I know, Terry has spent millions buying us a football club so let's waste bandwidth and talk bollocks for hours on how we can waste more of it.

Let's talk about the players we have instead of offering Terry's money up to be a retirement home for some vapid money hungry player looking for a retirement package.

Glad its terry that put the money up and not some of those posting,as we would probably be supporting a team of crocks who could only last a couple of games.Round 6 and already some want to replace some players.Hate to see what it looks like on here if we have an Auckland season in the years to come.Guess that will sort some of you out.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm thinking of next season - upwards and onwards, and all that.  The Brasilian boys I listed will still be looking for good money - but there will be fewer offers on the table from Europe and it may be possible to nick one of them away (especially with Juninho speaking highly of Sydney, Romario still singing the praises of Adelaide, and the less famous Brasilians like Daniel and Felipe also enjoying life here).  Can you imagine the effect of trading up from an aging Ross Aloisi to an aging Ze Roberto?

Only Daniel is on a two year deal - which means the others will most likely leave unless they get new deals soon.  If Felipe keeps playing as well as he is, he'll get stolen away like Fred did last year.  If Cleberson and George don't get game time they'll go somewhere they can actually play.

reckon terry will offer big bucks to him? i know there is a salary cap but if clebs and george leave then it will open up 2 imprt spots plus money

Wouldn't mind seeing  someone like Ray Parlour in the Squad. As for defense... persuade Tony Adams out of retirement and play him in Centre back

There is a really awesome german striker with A-League experience. He'd cost a lot but would be worth breaking the bank for:

I think that Elrich is way better than a veteran. He has the skills and pace to play at a high level (and he did until an injury rueld him out), so why should we get some old pansy player who's 34/35 when we can havea Socceroo who rules??

Also, this is an interesting topic but our squad is full. So shouldn't we close it and perhaps re-open it at the end of the season?

Bobo Balde would be a great signing in this league - I was always a little surprised he never went further from Celtic in England, Italy or Spain

I think that if we don't extend his contract we're a bunch of dummies. Daniel's the man - no doubt about it. But Felipe is just as good. So usually when you have two great players - logic would suggest that you should try and keep them.

Haven't seen Milan selling Kaka, Roma selling Totti or Man Utd selling Rooney...

True NZP - but those fellas don't really have much else to aspire to - whereas there are huge steps up from the A-League.

Getting Felipe to sign a new contract is a must for next year - Daniel has already signed for two years.

My money would be on bringing Teddy Sheringham to the Nix....he would both shine and lead with a wealth of knowledge for the rest of the team to learn from.  Imagine how good Smeltz would become playing in a squad with Teddy!!!

He'd quickly become a Yellow Fever favourite I'm sure of that.

Felipe will be signed for next if not two more seasons.....that will be getting worked on right about now.

lol i didnt know that! but it goes to show a true first class player can bring the rest up to scratch.I Wasnt really thinking of the likes of Devine or Elrich who have tinkered with the big guns, more along the lines of the Roberto Carlos and Edwin Van Der Sar types, players who have had to earn their right to stay at the top for years not just a season or two (like Devine) who were bought on a whim or flukes of form. But you could go either way on it really, would the money be well spent? would they learn anything? or would it just be a waste of a spot in the squad because their just TOO DAMN OLD to run around! lol

i thnk van der sar is a huge call. maybe the biggest. i cant think bwt it seriously
