It's funny how everyone ragged on Lochhead when he was here but how many would have him today?
2 games in and I still think defence is our biggest concern. Sigmund put in the performance of a captain that lead from the front and covered everywhere at the back and considering who was along side him in the back 4, I can see why. A win, which was deserved (as was last weeks but no dice) does not hide the fact that we are frail at the back.
I still believe that Doyle and Manny are the wrong way round and it was a moment of "why are you out there" when Doyle was dead last in a 2 man foot race in the 1st spell. Manny had only one moment where I went "good work" but he largely scares me cause he gets dragged around and out of central and is too rash to be relied upon. Fenton gets forward but looks gun shy, like he either needs the obvious space or wants a weak LB to run at. His 1st half last week was his best and seems to getting progressively worse (and worse is relative to that 1st 45 last week)
Riera was solid, Lia was solid, Roly has hit the ground running but he holds that ball on for too long and needs to release it (my only niggle with him). He gets 7 shades lumped out of him every week and still goes hard. McGlinchey has been OK for me and covers a lot of space laterally across the park. He is not producing what he did at CCM but I think he is in a different role where he is less central and gets the ball back to goal more. Krishna will be fine (nice finish), Powell is just a squady and Rodriquez has done nothing wrong in his 40 odd mins.
Sarpong looks short of a gallop and his touch seems less than what I would expect with a player of his calibre. It was wet and greasy tonight and all players struggled but have we seen anything that makes you say "he'll come right"? Last year Roly was poor in game one but game 2 we went "he's got something" but so far, Sarpong has not done the same. It could be just match fitness but I would have expected a couple of little things to just show his class. Kinda like Ifill when he was not fit. He still had little things where you went "he's good" and Sarpong is not showing that yet. I hope it's just a match fitness thing.
I think we look ok against what I think will be 2 of the bottom feeders this year. We dominated possession and stopped the other team from playing. Perth and Newcastle are poor in their own right but we made them look poor too by stopping them from playing. Can we do that to Victory and a surprisingly decent Brisbane? I suspect Victory will kill us with pace and defensive frailties and that game could be ugly.
It's encouraging so far based on these 2 weeks and I think the playoffs is the minimum cause there are definitely teams worse than us. I just think we have more to show and hope that we springboard from this trip cause if not, we will have a season of those games we shoulda won but only got a point.
