Looking forward to watching the next huge EPL derby between Southampton and Newcastle this season.....

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

If they put an Auckland team in the A-League THAT would create a rivalry.

I thought there already had been an organic "rivalry" with things like the medias and Patrick's banter last season.

And how would a Wellington Auckland one be any more organic.  If they stuck a trophy in it year 1 that would be just as artificially made, if they advertised it as the NZ clash or any other title, that would be just as artificial.

We've got a rivalry with Adelaide and particularly we had one with Gombau. Sydney were something of a bug bear, and with Smeltz and Pignata for sure. Perth? More of a fraternal game IMO. The lol, rivals, ha, yeh game

Because, quite simply, there is already a rivalry between Wellington and Auckland so there would be no need to create one. Fox Sports deciding that we should be rivals with Perth because they happen to be the furthest away from us is ludicrous. Rivalries grow, as Rosco says, they don't just magically appear because a TV station decides they should.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

I still think we should refer to Perth's stadium as the Glory hole.

As in, we're going to get humped at the Glory hole.

Honestly, it's probably better it happens now rather than half way through the season. Gives a chance for the likes of Fox to step up immediately and get some experience.

Now, if Siggy succumbs to his niggling injuries too - we could have some big problems.

Will Zadkovic completely fluke a screamer again or will he finally have a mental breakdown after watching too many JAYFC videos? Find out Sunday night.

To commemorate this huge occasion, a new trophy has been created;

http://www.wellingtonphoenix.com/article/long-dist...

"The Wellington Phoenix and Perth Glory will be playing for a new trophy when they meet in the second round of the Hyundai A-League at NIB Stadium on Sunday.

The two clubs have collaborated to form the Long Distance Derby Cup which acknowledges the 5255km between the two cities which is the longest distance any club travels in world football."

Unfortunately, this is completely wrong.

There are several teams in Russia that currently travel almost twice as far:

"The title of longest distance travelled between teams in a domestic league actually belongs to Russian clubs FC Luch-Energiya Vladivostok and FC Baltika Kaliningrad, who travel a whopping 10,366km for their second division clashes."

http://www.3news.co.nz/sport/phoenix-glory-to-contest-long-distance-derby-2015101313#ixzz3oaMwVR1Z

Since 2002 Batlika Kaliningrad have also faced SKA Energiya Khabarovsk in the Russian second division. The distance between the teams is 9,500 km which is 5930 miles.

Teams in the UEFA Champions League sometimes travel much further than the Nix or Perth do too.

In last season’s Champions League Porto and Shakhtar Donetsk travelled 9,300km to face each other in Group H.

We sign Danaskos who can apparently cover CB (or not, depending which report you read), then, we use our last spot to sign a young CB to provide cover for our CB's.

Neither of these signing are apparently good enough to cover our CB's - both of whom went into the season with injury niggles and both of who are well over thirty.

Not Ernie/Greenie/Domey/Russ's best work to be fair.

This is simply not true, the distance between Porto and Lviv (where the game was played, in western Ukraine) is about 3300km (9,300km is practically halfway around the world!

The longest distance that I'm aware of in the Champions League will actually occur this season - this is the first time that a Kazakhstani team has qualified for the group stages, and they've been drawn in the same group as Benfica. The distance between Lisbon and Astana is over 6,000km. That's pretty intense for a midweek trip!

Ah, my fault - the UK article was published no doubt before the venue was switched from Donetsk to Lviv due to the Ukraine turmoil. It has 9300km as the round trip - they describe the distance beween stadia as 4650 km. In reality, the switch of venues meant the distance was 3465 km

http://metro.co.uk/2014/11/18/meet-the-russian-clu...

As you say, the more than 6000 km trip between Lisbon and Astana this Champions League season will be more than the Wellington - Perth trip.

Atletico Madrid and Benfica are in the same group as Astana (Kazakhstan) and they travel 5671 km and 6165 km respectively to play Astana.

But if the Phoenix website article is referring only to domestic leagues, then the Russian second tier has at least two sets of clubs who are more than 9000 km apart.

UEFA has a recent article on the longest trips in UEFA comps:

http://www.uefa.com/uefaeuropaleague/news/newsid=2...

This season, Kairat Almaty (Kazakhstan) and Bordeaux travelled 5947 km to face eachother in the Europa League qualifying play-offs.

Previously Kairat and Aberdeen travelled 5496 km to play eachother this season.

Yes of course its domestic competitions, because otherwise you'd count the club world cup or one off friendlies. A Premier League team playing in Australia for a pre-season would be the furthest, they probably also consider it the longest trip in a top tier which I would disagree with.

But I can see that the Nix v Perth fixtures have significance in football in this part of the world, so why not have a trophy?

After all, it must be a pain in the arse for the players to travel so far every year.

Outside of football though, fixtures against Perth sides are common and the general sporting public are kind of used to NZ teams travelling long distances.

The Breakers travel to Perth every season in the NBL

The Super 15 Rugby sides travel much further to South Africa as well as to Perth.

The ANZ Netball has a Perth team.

Can you expect someone thats only been with the team for a matter of days to start? Been a profesional for a matter of days in fact. Manny probably has been doing that role in training throughout preseason.

Would prefer to see Doyle there though.

That's a reasonable explanation for why we aren't starting them in this game, but it begs the question of why we didn't sign CB cover months ago. I suppose it's possible we were chasing some guys and the deals fell through late or something, but all the noises out of the club wouldn't suggest that was the case, and I can't remember any substantial rumours or statements from the club that indicated we were anywhere near signing defensive cover until Danoskos showed up. Doesn't mean we weren't of course, but usually someone hears or says something

Greenacre said on this weeks podcast that all the CB's we looked at signing were either a bit shiit or were asking for more money than we could afford to allocate on another CB.

My feeling is that we've settled on a couple of young(ish) players at the back in order to be able to spend parts of the cap elsewhere. Allocating your cap correctly is such a big part of being able to win the A-League.

Not sure where we've spent the rest of the cap considering Sarpong was the only other player signed? I assume he's on quite a bit of coin, though if what you say is true then he'd be on much more than I initially thought.

Powell too, obviously, but assume he was on the cheap too.
