it just frustrates me that we have gone into this season without trying to upgrade our weaknesses. Manny Muscat is our reserve CB and Tom Doyle is one injury away from the starting XI.

I agree; but unfortunately they've both come into the squad late and aren't up to speed yet - that is the biggest problem for me. There is no reason they couldn't of been signed much earlier.
