Countdown to oblivion
Think we need to change formation but I'm content to wait another week to see if it works any better. Can just see that if we changed to 3 at the back would solve a lot of problems we had adding another CB will cover for the lack of pace, having fenton and cacace in the wingback roles will help them be more involved and bring width, davila will be a lot better in that traditional CAM role.
Cant stand SFC! no doubt they will get a goal from VAR.
If we line up in a like-for-like 4-2-2-2, we're doomed. They're better man for man.
Can't see us winning this one, but also see Sydney winning the comp this year so.
We won't switch to a back three after one game, maybe we never use it at all, but man I wish we would change to something like this.
The only difference in that squad is Sotirio out for Hudson-Wihongi (anyone in for Sotirio is a good move really). We all want Libby and Louis to not have to worry about getting back quite as much as they have to in a back four, and shifting Davila into the middle would mean he wouldn't get lost drifting out wide so often. With the 4-2-2-2 we saw on the weekend it seemed like we had 3 players on each wing at times, with nobody in the middle. It won't happen, but I really want to see us back to a back three

This would be preferred lineup too, I think with the squad we've recruited we can only play narrow 4 at the back formations or 3/5 at the back formations with the lack of out and out wingers can't really see us working well in a 4-3-3
Love the 3-5-2 formation, overlapping wing backs who get high up the pitch is a MUST in the modern game
identical to the system Sheffield United used to get 2 promotions in 3 years back into the premier league.

This looks like it suits our squad much better. I reckon it shows Talay's releative inexperience.
Can Ollie Sail play up front? A big unit, good link play around the box

Crack Up
Your sighting UfUK reasoning that he isn't using the above formation due to his inexperience, whilst advocating a forum users line up, who I'm guessing doesn't have 20 years experience as a pro footballer and won a league as an Assistant Manager.
Having a laugh.
I think the above works better as well, but I have nothing but gut to go on and having watched too much footy!

Time will tell if results aren't coming after a few weeks and he's not wanting to change then you can say its his naivety as a head coach but it does feel he wanted to use this formation before he'd even signed any players and i feel like without signing a hit striker he needs to adapt to where our stronger areas are which is like the wingbacks
Tbh results as an assistant manager mean jack diddly. Some assistants go on to be great managers. Some go on to have shocking records even if the team they were with won everything while being assistant.
Can i watch the game without having sky?

Yes, if you live in Sydney :)

I love this attacking 5-3-2. The problem that many teams have with implementing this formation, is the relative lack of effective RWB's and LWB's compared to almost every other position available. However we have two of the best in the league in those positions (and yes I'm including Fenton here).
As soon as you lose one of the effective wing-backs the formation falls apart though, as we found out when Fenton got injured. WU don't have any LWB's as far as I can see, and teams that can play effectively with width are going to tear them apart down the side the Pain plays on. Even the Nix, being basically ineffective outwide had most of our good play down this side.

With that personnel, it will turn in to 5 - 2 - space - 3 pretty quickly too
You said it yourself @Jazzy Jeff, Talay won't go for it anyway, but I'm guessing he will tweak the tactics, if not the formation (IMO the tactics were the issue, not the formation)
100% this ^ Talay needs to push the full-backs higher and get the defensive midfielders to act as defenders when they attack so they can cover them.
Exactly. Western United's 5-3-2 was tailor made for our full backs to engage with their wing backs.
Either that or play a flat 4-4-2 with the wide midfielders engaging with their wing backs. We did neither.
In theory, this week will be full back on full back, with the difference coming from at least one of our attacking midfielders doubling up of their attacking midfielders when we don't have the ball.
In any formation, there is the right answer, the tactics are the important bit

Yeah this is beautiful. TAHW's most suitable position too imo so will soften the, uhh, blow of losing Sotirio. Ufuk's definitely most comfortable with the 4-2-2-2 so I don't mind him tweaking it to suit our players.
If we stick to a 4-2-2-2, I'd love to see Fenton and Cacace push much, much higher up with the ball (to the point they did last season) and Steinmann sinking back into a defensive three once he's got rid of the ball and got it forward. Fenton and Cacace bust a gut to get back (Cacace certainly has the engine for it when we lose possession. Rufer acting like a bulldog in midfield when without possession, with Ball dropping back to support Rufer and Davila in midfield to overwhelm the opposition's likely attempts to counter-attack. Our import striker (hopefully a big guy with pace) sticks up front harrassing the back line. That way when with the ball, we can choose to either hoof it to the target man with the onrushing Fenton and Cacace cutting inside (something Cacace likes to do), or buildup by filtering the ball to Steinmann and working opportunities like we did last season.

I like the look of this, but however I would go with McGing ahead of TAHW. Controversial I know, but he looked really good to me in the preseason, and I'd like a bit of pace to cover for Taylor and Devere, who aren't exactly the quickest. He's also a good young prospect, and I'm always in favor of youth.

I think TAWH would be better suited with his ball skills and his pace. iirc McGing was injured recently so probs not fully match fit didn't make the match squad last round. I'd probs replace McGing with DeVere over the course of the season

The two fullbacks were clearly tentative about going forward, I haven't looked at Louis's passing map but it looked live like he was playing everything backwards or inside. Notable too that without Krishna's hold up play that the two fullbacks rarely got the ball in space. We need to be better in possession in the final third to suck their defence central before we go wide rather than going wide straight from our defensive central midfield.
We'll park the bus with with a 0-10 formation. 0 shots on target. We'll take the 0-0 draw and 1 competition point and get on the first flight out of Sydney. #COYN #talayvision

I'd take that.

I'd be good with that. I'd have sotirio no where near the first team. Still gobsmacked he lasted the full 90

Not sure about Davila up front - in theory, that position is the one that should get most of the chances as Ball will drop deep to spray passes wide.
same as last time except put Cal where Sotirio was and put Piscopo where Cal was playing

Agreed, though not sure about Piscopo. Don't think he's good enough to start yet.
Hooper up front?
probably not till next week at home v perth.
Doubt we'll see him at all v Sydney
Has already been confirmed by the club that he won't play in Sydney, first appearance looking at the Perth game.
