I'm not convinced that on paper we do have that good of a squad. Sure, we have some good players but I don't think we're close to the top sides in that regard. And even with the players we have there's a difference between having good players and having a good squad. A good squad implies players that complement each other and that make sense as a cohesive whole - and we definitely don't have that. We can't fit all our supposed star players on the pitch at once without having guys out of position or playing a weird formation, or both.

not as good as Sydney or Victory or City no. But it's better than the Mariners and Jets, and on par with everyone else except maybe Brisbane which might be a fraction better. I agree with the formation issues, and if there is an issue, I think it's that we have the same number of 'stars' as any other side, but the backup squad members probably aren't as good as some of the other sides. Even still, just two extra wins at this stage would have us right in the mix, which is frustrating.

CCM was a "big" team then.

In what sense? IIRC they didn't have marquees and were spending within the cap. My memory is didgy though

He still had a lot of talent in his squads - the season CCM won the championship was the season WSW won the premiership and he still coached CCM another season. That season was also Victory with Ange and Marco winning the Johnny Warren.

I should have explained that better.  Given the number of exceptions now available, it's going to be very difficult for team outside of the two Sydney and Melbourne sides to win the league. So even if you had the best coach at a lower resourced team, your chances of doing what Arnold did at CCM aren't as good. Really need to have some of those big four teams to have bad seasons (like that did when CCM were good).

Fair, but I think that there is still a chance for a well drilled and balanced team to do better than a team of grab bag marquees, but I agree it will be harder than it was

See both Singh and Ridenton in the lineup. http://www.wellingtonphoenix.com/photo-gallery/wel...

Moss, Tratt, Roly, Lowry, Fox, A-Rod, Kosta, WeeMac, Watson, Parkhouse, Rossi, Lia, Doyle, Italiano, Krishna, Ridenton, Singh and Smeltz.

Durante is out due to five yellow cards ban and Finkler is away for two weeks in Brazil due to birth of his daughter.

Edit: missed Tratt and WeeMac

I wish they would just post the team news on one slide.

Singh and Ridenton in for McG and Tratt I guess. Injured?

Edit: Tratt and Mcg added now. They weren't on the list when it was first posted!

Yeah it's frustrating the slide thing but appears to be an A-league #Metric. Fenton out with injury.

Tratt and WeeMac are listed

Does not bode well!

Singh  has the potential to be top class. I would love for him to get a decent run against Melbourne as he is good enough.

I'm pretty sure I heard from Dura on the Pod was that he has a lot of promise, but he would get bullied in the A-League in terms of his physicality. Would definitely like to see him get a chance eventually though.

Myself, I'm really excited about Riddenton. Wish he would get his chance, feel like he would do well for us in a midfield/attacking midfield role. Singh is young and has plenty of time, but I am very excited about him as well.

Since we beat victory and played very well, we have been pretty sh-ite. I can't explain it, but somehow we need to get into a positive mindset and attack. We are crap when we dwell on the ball and start passing it backwards, we achieve nothing. Midfield has to move it quicker and move it forwards and everyone has to at least try and get it near smeltz more, cos we ain't using him correctly at all.

Victory were dog-tired from their previous game and did not rotate their team much. We played well against a tired team.

It really isn't a good squad. Unproven youngsters, has-beens and under-performing 'stars'.

We simply are not good enough and I am tired of watching very average journey men and under performing "stars" so I would rather have a young, hungry player with lots of potential on the field.

Its funny if we lose and say it's too hot then we're making excuses, if we win then we make excuses for the other team...
