In 2017/18, 80000 people died from flu, so the coronavirus does not even get close.

Um, that argument would be an incredibly good argument if the chart below (covid deaths) immediately drops to zero tomorrow. Unfortunately that probably won't happen.

Firstly, that chart is extremely poorly plotted. Secondly, 90% of the deaths have happened in China (mostly in Hubbei province) and Italy. China is understandable because that's where the whole thing started, and Italy, well, I explained what happened there in a different thread. Suffice to say that it's far from a typical case.
None of this is to say that the situation isn't to be taken seriously, and that's exactly what our government is doing.
I see on Instagram davila's baby was just born. I assume he will be flying off back home asap
He's in the phoenix match preview which came out after the birth so maybe not.
Apparently victory arrived a couple of days ago, either precaution from the virus or treating the game like a final.
I can confirm the Victory arrived on Friday afternoon as I was at the Intercontinental when their bus turned up.
"The AFL is determined to protect the integrity of the season by completing the full schedule of 198 home and away matches"
"banking as many matches as possible in the first weeks of the season in case of possible shutdown" - including shortening matches, 5 day turnarounds, lists of lower league players to step in if frontline players fall ill
AFL CEOs have been warned to expect the outbreak to peak in Australia sometime between May and July.
.." risk players on commercial airline flights?"
Presently the AFL is due to launch on Thursday night behind closed doors, instead of the 90,000 expected at the G for Richmond v Carlton.
I think article will age very badly.

In what way is it poorly plotted? Italy is a special case? Check back on Spain and Germany in 10 days time... Your comments will have aged like milk.
Also just looked and 57% of deaths are in China not 90%. Within 7 days that will be below 50%. "it's just the flu" is seriously such a bad take

The virus in China started in November 2019. 22 Jan isn't day 0. Germany's intensive testing started on 24 February, Italy's on 21 February. As of right now, Italy has 1,200 dead, Germany has 8. And this is not to mention that the virus has actually been in Europe since at least January, and possibly even December.
Next.

China AND Italy.

You're right. I read your comment incorrectly. Apologies.
Well, I'm looking forward to a good game tomorrow night!
Sadly I have a bad feeling it'll be the last one for some time...

I hope you are right but unfortunately this in my view and more importantly the scientists is more serious
No one wants to give this thing a year to see the stats
One key difference is there is no vaccine
and the fatality rate for this new thing is higher
Borders wouldn't be closed for the flu

This virus is still spreading has no vaccine and has a 10x fatality rate of the flu, you can't compare a few weeks of this new caronavirus with a years worth of established flu virus.
All very unsettling for the players. Particularly those with kids. Especially for Davilla.
Going to make focus difficult tomorrow.
The amazing approach to this is the UK. It's the complete opposite of the majority.
They know it's out of control now but are deliberately allowing it to spread further.
They figure by allowing the majority of the population to get it, and develop herd immunity that is the best approach long term.
Schools stay open for the meantime as by and large children are not getting sick from this at all but are super spreaders.
While telling those most at risk to lay low.
They figure they can flatten the curve this way.
When their health system starts to creak they will turn the tap off. Closing schools briefly etc until their health system can cope again.
Meanwhile those who have had it, developed immunity and haven't died keep the economy going.
It sounds brutal but that's exactly what they are doing, playing the longer game
It does not come without risk and could end very badly
Luckily we are one stage behind them and potentially may be able to not go to the extremes of a lock down (China) or their approach

Do some reading. Spouting this nonsense is dangerous at this point, and should be lumped in with anti vaxxers, flat Earth enthusiasts and Trump supporters. It's anti-science and anti-logic.
For one, a large section of the population already have antibodies to fight most strains of flu - COVID-19 is a different beast altogether. It's a new virus; no one has these antibodies. We've also got flu vaccines which, while they aren't 100% effective and are a bit of an educated guess depending on which strains are going around - is a hell of a better than *no* vaccine, particularly for the elderly and the immunocompromised (these people make up quite a significant chunk of the population..)
The majority of the world will likely catch this virus. Think about what this will do to our health care system - even in countries like NZ and Australia where it's comparatively good, it's going to place an unimaginable strain on nurses, doctors and general infrastructure.
Read. Get back to me. Don't call it fake news. Cheers.
All very unsettling for the players. Particularly those with kids. Especially for Davilla.
Going to make focus diffult tomorrow.
The only silver lining to this pandemic is that the virus does not seem to (thus far, pending any mutations..) affect young children. I believe the death count for people under 10 is currently 0, but correct me if I am wrong there.
I'm not sure if it's 0 but yep kids are definitely not dying of this
That's very good

People are catching the virus multiple times though, immunity isn't lasting very long. Countries like Singapore went into extreme lockdown at the start and are doing the best. It's a short term economic pain to make sure the health system isn't overwhelmed.
so no one cares we have to play home finals in Campbelltown just because of a runny nose and cough.

I really dont think people in NZ have come to grip with how serious this is going to be. I flew from NZ back to France three weeks ago. When I arrived there were probably a dozen or so cases in France and a few hundred in Italy. Every one was relaxed saying its a Chinese problem. The scary thing is how the numbers just explode. France now has 5000+ cases and in Italy 100+ people a day are dying. France is now following Italy and shutting down. All schools, universities etc are closed. The city where I live has canceled all public events, the library has even closed. Everyone is advised to avoid social contacts as much as possible.
This will happen in NZ, 100%. The virus is already in the country.
From a sporting point of view I would expect by the end of the month there will be a complete shut down of all sport in Australasia. Tough for the Nix as they are having a great season but sport is secondary to health.
The good news is the virus will run its course. Life will go back to normal. The average age of people dying in Italy is 81. In France all the deaths have been for people over 65 with preexisting medical conditions. 85% of people who catch it will have mild symptoms.
All very unsettling for the players. Particularly those with kids. Especially for Davilla.

I also read yesterday that the death count was 0 for under 10s, and only one for age 11-19.
NRL, AFL will stop too. They're delusional right now, and quite frankly irresponsibile too.
I believe it isn't clear that a game behind closed doors will lead to the virus spreading.
when 1 player or support staff is tested positive in any of the 11 teams then they will call time, may even end before this happens. either postpone or cancel. it may be shark for us but it has to be done. cannot seriously expect our players to be away from their families for 7 -10 weeks while this is happening.
A lyrics refresher for the 51st minute (in honour of the 51 Christchurch mosque shooting victims)
crowd maybe smaller today, will not help with dominion post headline" suspected virus case in wellington"
confirmed case now,man in isolation in his hotel room in wellington according to nz herald.
Expecting a lot of no shows crowd-wise today - for good reason.
It's going to be a difficult game for players and fans alike to really get into. What a shame given the enjoyable season so far. Hopefully, we can pick it all up again in a few months when there is a little more certainty around the status of the virus and managing life around it.
Bill Shankly was wrong.

I was more thinking about if the team is considering relocating to Aus. That will be tough and unsettling right now for those with families during these uncertain times.
just saw the warriors are staying in australia and david dome saying in the herald that the phoenix are looking to do the same
Do some reading. Spouting this nonsense is dangerous at this point, and should be lumped in with anti vaxxers, flat Earth enthusiasts and Trump supporters. It's anti-science and anti-logic.
One of the silver linings to COVID-19 is that people are standing up and shouting down "fake news" and conspiracy theory, because now life and death are on the line (as opposed to, say, just who gets into Government). Good work.
just saw the warriors are staying in australia and david dome saying in the herald that the phoenix are going to do the same
I can see the Nix doing this too. They already have planned to be there for the next week. In another week or two the A league will probably be suspended anyway like most other sports. After the Newcastle game we have the bye, so will have time to reassess. Australian players will be happy enough over there. As will the younger NZ players. Just for those with family back in NZ, it will be tough. But those players still can return to NZ anytime, but need to self isolate. At least they will be with family then. And let Davilla go back to Mexico to be with his new born for as long as he needs.
so no one cares we have to play home finals in Campbelltown just because of a runny nose and cough.
Now's not the time for your bullshark mate.
so no one cares we have to play home finals in Campbelltown just because of a runny nose and cough.
4kn idiot
So, only two options regarding the Phoenix's continuing to play games this season:
(A) Base themselves in Australia until travel restrictions into NZ are lifted or the completion of the season.
(B) The FFA agree to suspend the A-League for some time e.g. one month and then reassess the situation.
I think that I'm with Paul Ifill on this one:
Relocating the Phoenix for 10ish weeks during a pandemic to carry on playing football is ridiculous!
Suspend the league for a month and see how the land lies.
why would someone waiting for the results of a virus test be stupid enough to travel to another country. this is only one case how many other people have done this so far. hope no one was in the cafe when he got his positive result over the phone from australia.

This is unfortunately the argument for closing the borders completely. Enough people are idiots and can't be relied upon to follow the guidance. Gonna be an expensive hotel bill for the numpty.
And, yeah, I'm with Ifill and others above - suspend the league and make another call in a month or so if it's possible or practical to start up again.

Should be able to keep the league going in Australia as long as nobody in the teams including staff get infected. Will have to try some force some strictness onto players about their activities to protect them from getting infected. Sucks for us though.
