The crowd was disappointing. It was a nice day in Auckland today - if it was raining or cold then i hate to think how low it would be. If they are going to play games in Auckland (and as an Aucklander I hope they do, please don't take it away!), they need to play at Eden park if they want crowds. I'm pretty sure if they are getting 11k at Albany it would of been over 15k at Eden park which would make for better 'Metrics' and no one would be complaining about the crowd. I agree there is no excuse for not getting to a one off game in Albany, I certainly wouldn't miss it, but for lots of people it seems too far to go.

except the cost structure of Albany will be far better for the phoenix as opposed to Eden park.

We should probably get some count of discount for the horrendous pitch aswell

Just made it back to Hastings now. Thanks Brandon, your mate and Liz for your help in gathering the flags etc. Sorry Boxey, I had cars up my carzy and could not stop and wait. You know what Auckland traffic is like. Please can we not play there any more? Paintec sand for a  pitch.

Enjoyed the game. As everyone has already mentioned the pitch was abysmal. Hated the grey strip. I dont get down to Wellington as much as I would like so it would have been lovely to see the Phoenix playing in their usual strip up here in Auckland, its one of the nicer strips in the A league as well so why make us watch them in grey?.

I just dont get why the crowd wasnt bigger. With the size of the overall football community in Auckland that game could/should have been a sell out without breaking in to a sweat. Its a one off game each season and with Ernie in charge they are always good to watch. I bet half the crowd was up from Wellington way.

Given the size of turnout, Eden Park would resemble a large barn with a few chickens at one end.

Face it, Auckland has shown for years that it is not a football city. Just bin it.

Maybe Christchurch could be home for an A-League club? Added bonus of a team on each of the main islands, and really easy connections.

Nostalgia isnt what it used to be...........

We can't win in Auckland, can we? "We're the WELLINGTON Phoenix, fudge off JAFAs. Why won't those JAFAs come support us?!?"

Listen, as Buffon II rightly said, 11,000 in QBE had a great atmosphere. It felt like the whole stand was shaking when we started chanting TEN MORE YEARS. And no-one told us to sit down this time.

And the pitch debacle, as TopLeft07 explained, was no-one's fault, just one of those things which happens in groundskeeping.

BTW, getting fans in Auckland (and Chch, and elsewhere in NZ) is one of those precious #metrics. Even if Welnix wanted to keep everything restricted entirely south of Waikanae and north of Cook Strait, I doubt FFA would let them.

As I've gathered elsewhere: they decided to re-sow it after rugby season ended, but it didn't "take". It was suggested that this might have been something to do with scraping off the top level of soil, which was done unevenly leaving the ground extremely patchy.

So much this its the same problem we have in Wellington where we also apparently have a large football community who for whatever reason just wont come out and support. If the marketing gurus can crack that one it would be half the battle.

Many years since i lived in Auckland but for those of you who do and no it would Mt Smart be an option or is that to far out, Seems the Warriors are going to be staying there so more money will be spent on it, Would it be a bad thing to align ourselves with the warriors fan base.

I've got no problem with Mt Smart as a field - it's certainly much closer to civilisation than Albania, even near a train station - but the stadium itself is pretty decrepit. Also, the Warriors are still armwrestling with the Council on whether they can stay there or whether it's going to be turned into a speedway.

My first Nix game!

Thoughts

Standing all game? Singing all game? Going crazy when we score. Love it.

The pitch hasn't got better since ACFC's first game against Waitakere - they've just got better at painting it.

The bloke next to me was so refreshed he struggled to tell which team was which, but I reckon we all did - that kit decision was a shocker.

Thanks to Tracey and others for being friendly!

Awesome stuff first time Nix fan! at the end of the day, there was only one team in it...the 22 players lolz yeah the kit clash was a fail, but the quality goals and drama on field made it a well deserved 3 points.

It's funny how all this negativity about the crowd number is exactly what you guys hated David Dome and other Phoenix people saying about previous crowd sizes. For what's become a yearly fixture, you should not have been expecting much more than 10,000 for a game at North Harbour Stadium. Here's why:

· North Harbour Stadium is a HORRIBLE stadium. Every Aucklander knows it. It's a miserable experience from start to finish and it never changes. When there have been problems at Westpac for you guys, there's been efforts to fix them. That doesn't happen at NHS. The place doesn't even have a permanent screen! Instead, there's a tiny temporary one that kept cutting out right through the best parts of the replays last night.

· Location. I said this before in another thread. From Auckland City Centre to North Harbour is the equivalent of Westpac to Porirua Harbour. That's not going to stop some fans, obviously, but the casual ones are not going to bother. They'll likely say "I'll go next year" or "I went last year". This is especially the case for families and for people who live even further south and east. From Botany, it's the equivalent distance of Westpac to the Paekakariki Domain.

· Nowhere on my ticket did it say anything about public transport. But let's say all public transport is free. I'm lucky that I only need to catch one bus to get to Britomart, but weekend times means that leaves only once an hour and would take 40 minutes to get there. And then I would have to take the bus from Britomart to the stadium. On the way back would be even harder because I don't know how late the buses go. For anyone else further afield, that instantly rules out public transport even as a free option (which it apparently wasn't).

· Ticketmaster. Makes me angry just seeing the name. For a company that sells tickets, they a really terrible job of making it appealing. I wanted to sit on the top level for the game. "Sorry, no tickets are available". It then sticks me in block 4 as the "best available". Two hours later, I try again and suddenly I'm in block 6. I choose those, go through all the stuff, it shuts down on me. I start again, get similar tickets and finally manage to purchase them. Of course, throughout this whole ordeal, I've had to fill in three or four captchas to prove I'm human, as well as manually fill in all my details including address (despite printing at home) even though I was signed in the entire time! So was that the end of it? Of course not. Trying to print was a nightmare. No matter what settings I chose, the pages would come out wrong and print too big and cut itself off so at no point a barcode would come out. I finally though, screw this, I'll just show them on my phone. I open up the page and "This is not your ticket, please print at home". The only way I could do it in the end was by print-screen, cutting them down in photoshop, then printing them on a Word Doc.

· I didn't get any food or drinks but my brother did. He was gone for at least 15 minutes during the first half because it was apparently a complete shambles. No EFTPOS initially, then they ran out of EFTPOS receipt rolls, and this was before the half time rush.

· There needs to be more advertising. And not just in bus shelters. You have to have a car to get to the match so don't try to advertise to people using public transport! I know they're designed for drivers to see as well but it's still not enough. There needs to be targeted advertising. Krishna should be front and centre for a game in Auckland. A lot of Pacific Islanders love the game and Fijians would especially love to see one of their own play but most Pacific Islanders live south of the bridge. Places like Mangere and Manukau are even further away than Botany. You cannot expect the casual football fan to travel that far for a match. It's just unreasonable.

And honestly, after last night, I'm glad it was only 10,800. We played well and beat Melbourne which is a terrific result, but that's where the good things stopped. As a match day experience, it was far more likely to put people off. The kits would also contribute to that. I can't remember who said it in another thread but it was something about not wearing yellow and black could potentially alienate the fans. I think that's actually a fair statement after last night. I came to see yellow and black. Instead I got some ugly drab grey kit with no warning or explanation. If I didn't recognise the players, I wouldn't have known who was who. It makes two horrible kits in a row now for Auckland too. Last year, we got the Hobbit one.

Apparently victory were going to play in their home strip but at the very last minute de bohun over ruled them and the ref and told them to change, they were already dressed which is why they were paying in their home shorts and socks but away shirt.

what I would love to know from the marketing gurus of the Phoenix or possibly the FFA is how that grey strip represents the rest of NZ anyway?

It was heinous

The second thing I would like to know is was it on sale at the game and assuming it was exactly how many they flogged?

The third thing I would like to know is whose idea was it?

What the hell is the A League/FFA even doing sticking their nose into it?!  Surely it's a decision between the referee and the club as to what strip they wear?

Is that true? Did he also sneaked in at night and destroyed the pitch?

I don't mind the Silver Strip, but why not use it for home home charity game like we did in the past.

Anyway, the strip is gone the 3 points stays, yay!

I love the first goal, those are the goals you need, not so nice but they win us games. I'm happy.

I am awake now.

1) It is JAFA - Just Another Fudgeen Aucklander. Not JAFFA.

2) A very big thank you to all those Victory fans whom made it over for the game, despite not being there in protest. I have never seen so many visiting fans and from those I spoke to, very friendly. You have done the Victory proud.

3) That pitch. WTF, yes it was a grass problem but painting the sand and soil green? especially the wrong shade of green.

4) WTF was with that sharkty 1980s "big" screen? Big green blotches on that too. Obviously the stadium owners really have invested a lot of money on it - yeah right.

5) Crowd numbers. From what I gather, piss poor advertising which needs looking at, and nearly 11k. A decent enough crowd because of this. Is that our lowest cowd to attend a game in Auckland? Ever decreasing circles...... But please take note, those that made the effort to attend, certainly helped for a very good atmosphere for most of the game. That has to be acknowledged. I am not a fan of the travelling circus but I enjoyed the crowd and the result. No one throwing beer around either. Probably because it was ripoff expensive.

6) It was fantastic to have a decent Mall across the road, even if it was a Westfield.

7) Thank you staff at the Merchent for being prettty friendly and helpful.

8) Thank yo too to the guy at the BP north of the Bombays whom was very helpful.

9) Thank you too to Tom Tom. Without you life in Auckland would be impossible and I also note that the driving up there is as crap as ever. Indicators are obviously an optional extra on cars.

10) Good to hear you shouting what was on your mind Doloras. I am quite sure the referee heard you.

11) WTF was with the kits? That had to be the most ridiculous decision ever and the referee should have instructed one of the two clubs to change into their first kit. A real brain fart with whom ever came up with that idea.

Fudge that was a long day, 23 hours to be exact. Cheapest place for petrol is Foxton Waitomo but they are credit card pumps. $1.69 per litre, followed by $1.71 at the Mobil also in Foxton. Everywhere else is just yet another rip you off.

Agreed . Firstly, why are we not wearing Yellow and Black? Secondly, if we change, why is to a drab grey colour which disappears into the background ? And thirdly, if we where the drab grey kit, why do the opposition get to wear it too? The whole thing is a monumental disaster, I didn't watch the game on TV cos I couldn't make out who was who. Bloody shame cos the result was brilliant. Remember: Yellow and Black please

Seriously, I know that QBE is out in the wop-wops, but I don't think it was that bad a fan experience - deffo better than Eden Park. Also note that free buses were laid on, direct from Aotea Square to the stadium.

If what Muscat says it correct, then this is another FFA balls up, forcing victory to change kit. But if we had been in Yellow and Black , then we wouldn't have had a problem in the first place, so Phoenix aren't totally exempt from blame. Football kits are supposed to be bright and colourful to ease identification, its been that way since 1900.
