I think that's actually a lot closer than you think, with involvement of the NZ Professionalf Footballers Association.

I don't think AKL is realistic at all, or Chch. You have to remember that NZF is right behind the scenes of the Phoenix (not giving them any credit, but we know they'll take it) and I can't see them green lighting another side. The plan is still to have the AW's playing in Phoenix strip and if rumours are true we'll be closer to that next year. It's a nice idea, but I'm not really sure we have or will develop the depth to sustain a second team based in NZ. A big part of it the development process, so it will be interesting to see what happens with the youth development league that is being talked about, and whether the Phoenix/NZ get funded to participate in that.
 
Basically, it would mean young players have a better springboard than the NZFC to progress to the A-League.

I think getting a team in that is probably more important than sending teams to the U17 or U20 WC's. Exposing our best to that level of competition is a great way to keep them playing regularly, in NZ and with each other. That's key.

Hi LG - I would prefer Ch-Ch, for the obvious reason that we would get a better topography coverage, given the S Island. That said Napier would be my second choice with Hamilton third - Ak last as they have got one hell of a lot of convincing that their interests carry no hidden agendas.

Auckland team at Mt Smart within 10 years.

There is no way the FFA will ignore an area with a population of 1 million+ - even if they have to bend the rules to make the team successful to draw crowds i'd bet they would do it (see also: Sydney season 1)

There is not other market that size in Australasia.

First and most important priority is to make sure the Phoenix get a team in the A-League under 21 comp. This is absolutly vital for the development of the game in NZ.
Not only will it give regular game time to youngsters already in the Phoenix like Barbarouses, Draper and co....but it opens up a viable pathway for NZ under 17,19 and 21 players to play top quality hard football week in and week out.
 
My pick for a second NZ A-League franchise would be Christchurch. It has the population(close to 400,000), Cantabruians are exceedingly parochial, the only other major sporting franchise is the Crusaders(no warriors or Breakers), they have a good football stadium at QE2 park, there is a football comunity there plus a big English population that would support a football team.
The only problem would be finding the money....is there a Chch equivalent of Terry?
 
Some people will say there is not the talent in NZ. I disagree. There are huge numbers of under 16 year olds playing in NZ....its all about spotting and developing that talent. Recently we have got youngsters on the books at Sunderland, West Brom and ????can't remember???? Aston villa???
 
A-League 2017....Wellington Phoenix wins the A-League again....Canterbury Rams and Auckland Cellphones both make the playoffs for the first time.

Auckland, yes. 1.3 million people is hard to argue with.   It would take some organising.   The orginal organisers of the Knights/Kings didn't have the dosh to do a Terry.  So it was footie on the cheap, but it still lasted 7 years.  They made the classic Kiwi mistake of under capitalising, and not sharing control to get the best overall professional advice and direction.
With vision comes passion, but its a hell of a lot easier with money.  I can think of a few people capable of this feat right now.

The only reason Football failed in Auckland was because we had two crap owners who put out two crap clubs that played crap football and put off the fans. We got figures close to what the Phoenix did in the first couple of years and that was playing halfway to Whangarei with no buses or trains.
If we had an owner half as good as Terry it would succeed, especially with a good derby relationship with the Phoenix.
It will happen within 10 years, because football is going to be huge in this part of the world and Aucklanders don't like to miss out on the latest thing.

I still dispute that the FFA would be willing to give AK another chance without either serious cash or a very new, very innovative gameplan. Auckland may be a market of 1.3m people but that's part of a 4m person market in NZ and that may be the way the FFA look at it.

Christchurch would be good or maybe a general south island team.The Kingz once played in timaru and 3000 people turned up.Timaru has a pop. of just under 30,000.Christchurch had over 4000 at ther pre-season cup game this year with very little advertising done.I think the support wud be there but i dnt know if we have a terry

Speaking as someone who was there for the first two NSL seasons, yes they were comparable to the Phoenix. Season one they had good crowds and got to five figures a couple of times, although they dropped a bit in season two. If I recall correctly that season they had to beat South Melbourne to make the play-offs, battered them in the first half but copped a sucker goal to be one down at HT. We were all booking plane tickets, but then the Kingz shipped five more in the second half, changed coach three times the next season, and many years later we have the Phoenix.
Hopefully the only comparison to the Auckland team and the 'nix is the enthusiastic welcome of season one, and the lessons of the Kingz/Knights have been well and truly learned. From this perspective, that seems to be the case.
