I am over this. I can handle decisions going against us, but I swear the referees have got worse season (not that they were good last season). Duane was saying the refs went out the back door last season at all, but this has happened a number of times this season and I believe that is a sign of refereeing incompetence.

Agree some of his decision were complete rubbish, and as for leaving by the back thats just gutless sh*t.I also thought he seemed to over rule the assistants a bit more than normal.
He wasnt the reason we lost though that is our own fault.

Yeah it was pissing me off too, we were outplayed, and we tried hard , but some of the refs (esp Gillette and Parsons) have no 'feel' for the game.
Durante getting a booking was madness, if the lino is upset by something a player says he raises his flag to get the ref's attention, but no Gillette came sprinting over the wave a card.
He struggles with consistency too, poor tackle from Fitzgerald on Siggy, then 2 mins later Lia win the ball in a tackle and gets carded.
Right - rant over...

I just hope we're able to put together a complaint of sorts, and that the FFA get onto it.

Look, if the FFA got on to it (extra training, sit out a weekend of games etc) the'd run out of 'qualified' refs. I really don't know why anyone would come to expect decent referees in the A-league

not sure why they bother having linesmen either, the majority of the time they look to the referee to see what he says before raising the flag

Not sure why we are upset with the ref. If we had a better ref then Durante would have given away a penalty and we would have lost 3-0.

I don't blame him for the result, I just want some consistency. If you are going to call borderline fouls, then do it for both sides please. Also, consistency between refs would be good too. Matt Smith's tackle was not too dissimilar to the one that Trent Sainsbury got sent off for on Friday.

Haha i was just going to say this. You only need to look at a player like Suarez to see how gullible those pricks are over in England. Falls down, it has to be a foul. Pretty much like Broich yesterday.
This is something i dont get either, surely refs know what these players are like, so why do they keep blowing everything up for them? Its madness. Theres a reason Broich is again the most 'fouled' player in the A-League, and its not because hes actually fouled either

we were beat fair and square .
The only thing we as fans can do about the ref is what we are already doing , booing and calling him a w**ker and sh*t .
Apart from that nothing will change so somehow i have come to accept that we usually will have sh*t reffing for the rest of the season with the odd good one

With regard reffering I think most has been said, however I sometimes think we dont make it easy on ourselves. If we give away a dubious free kick we seem to surround the ref with players giving him a serve. However warrannted it may be, I do not think it helps our case.

It always bugs me how guys get away with tackles at the attack end of the field, but then the same tackle at the defense end earns a free kick if not a card.
Can't remember who up-ended Siggy after the ball had gone out but it was let go, then Lia got carded for pretty much the same tackle further up the field.
Are refs instructed to take it in to account where on the field a tackle happens?

In other words Rosco you're saying the ref was biased. The Nix attack end was Roars defence end, and vice versa, after all.
Talented Euro divers and a gullible (or biased) ref made the difference in the treatment of infringements last night, imo.
Other than that was a pretty even game. They had two well taken goals, we had almost as many clear chances but didn't nail them.

By far the worst call that I saw was the advantage given to Brisbane, the player had a one-on-one with Paston which was saved. Then the ref called it back for the free kick right outside the box. I was standing at the other end of the field but from what I could see, that was f**king bizarre.

Posted this in the match fred, probably should be here too:
Also a note on the ref, considering all the angst there.
Let me start by saying that the refereeing standard in this league is generally pretty poor. But last night, I don't think the referee was anywhere near as bad as he's made out to be here, particularly considering that his worst decisions of the night were actually in our favour.
Durante's challenge in the second half was a dead-set penalty for which he should have got carded. Also, from where I was in the first half there appeared to be a trip on Berisha near the by-line in our box in the first half which also easily could have been given as a penalty. Let's also not forget that our best chance of the game, Ifill's 1 on 1 with Theo, came after one of the most obvious attacking fouls I've ever seen - Ifill literally shoved the defender off the ball prior to his shot.
Furthermore, I see a lot of people here have stated their first goal was offside - I have to say I was very interested to check this out, as watching it live I felt it was very close and I looked towards the AR as soon as Berisha received the ball. So I've looked at some replays, which are not completely conclusive. But based on the evidence within them, I'm 99.9% certain that Berisha was on and the goal is legitimate. The replay quite clearly shows that Durante was not very alert to danger, however.
As for the bookings people are complaining about, Durante would be well advised to know that dissent does not only come in the form of words, but also in the form of actions. Waving your arms around showing everyone that you thought the ref (or his assistant) that you strongly disagreed with the decision is not really that different to call the ref a blind moron. So you're just as likely to get booked for it, just like players have been carded in the past for ironically clapping refereeing decisions.
As for Brown's challenge - and I'm speaking from memory here - he pretty much played the man, and not the ball, in a promising counter-attacking move by the opposition. Even if there isn't much contact (and remember, there DOES NOT have to be contact for a referee to blow up for a foul) I can easily see why a referee would want to caution a challenge like that with a yellow card.

This is interesting - for those watching on TV, did he actually play advantage? I was certain I'd heard the whistle and saw the award of a foul as soon as the challenge was made, but some others around me thought he played advantage. Tried to see a replay on the big screen, but don't think they showed it.

It's up to the ref to decide how much advantage is played isn't it?

Yes, but I think it is reasonable to expect if you've given a team a 1 on 1 after playing advantage that you've given them enough.
But like I said, I didn't think he played advantage at the time, and others around me said he did, and as I've been unable to see the replay, just want to know what actually happened?

Thats right, the ref is responsible for the whole 5 yellow cards that Durante and Brown have received. The players have nothing at all to do with it. In fact they probably go into the game totally unaware about the previous 4 cards

I agree, if you give a player the chance to shoot 1v1 with an advantage call that is the advantage right there. What happens when you give a free kick after they don't score, is basically punishing the other team twice for the same foul.
From aisle 20 I was fairly certain the ref clearly signaled for advantage. It was unclear however , after the advantage was called, when he actually blew the whistle and brought play back.

Fair call, but it seemed that in that example, the only 'fair amount of advantage' the ref was looking for, was for the ball to bulge the back of the net.
After the guy made some ground, and pulled the trigger, only to have it awesomely stopped by Sir Paston, that was when the ref decided not enough advantage was played.
Surely, if you're able to recover enough to go one on one with the keeper, and have a shot without hinderence from any other player but the keeper, that would be classed as sufficient advantage.

So was I the only one to hear the whistle? I thought he blew the whistle and awarded the foul (i.e. pointing his arm towards our goal), but as it was over 100 metres away, I realise I could well be wrong here.

two of us sitting in aisle 14 totally agreed that the ref had signalled play on, in fact I think they had 2 shots before he went back and awarded the free kick.
