What on earth is this?  There was an add for Whitcoulls about it.  Is it an autobiography?

Could well be keen to buy it.  Probably costs about $40 mind you.

I'm going to buy it and put it in Auskiwi's christmas stocking.

Maybe Ricki's just bought a new fire?

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

It's his autobiography co-authored by Russell Gray (Kit Man). $35 in some places. Cheapest at the Warehouse and a decent read.

There has to be a sequel after the World Cup surely??
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Would someone like me who never saw the '82 campaign and was obviously too young/not alive to follow his career find it interesting?  Much about the Phoenix and All Whites over the past 10 years?

Ricki Herbert A New Fire

9781869507466

$ 34.99

Every Kiwi football fan knows Ricki Herbert. A star of the 1982 World Cup-qualifying All Whites, who under the inspired coaching of John Adshead and Kevin Fallon did the impossible, and took on the world from Mt Wellington, as Eriksson Stadium was then known, he then played professionally in the UK for Wolverhampton Wanderers. At the end of a successful playing career, one of the most highly respected and best-loved figures in the local game took his considerable skills into coaching the game he has loved with a passion all his life. When a New Zealand franchise, the Knights, finally joined the Australian league, their struggles and misadventures became headline news. In danger of losing their place in the competition after a disasterous year and facing an ignominious last on the results table, Herbert, by now coach of the All Whites, was called in to see them through the last five games of the season. He pulled them up from the bottom of the table. When millionaire developer Terry Serepisos came to the rescue and formed the Wellington Phoenix from the ashes of the Knights, no one was surprised that he wanted Herbert as coach. In a revealing and very readable account of the trials and tribulations of a life spent playing and coaching football from New Zealand, Ricki Herbert: A new fire is one for the Yellow Fever, the Phoenix fans, and general sports readers alike.

Sounds like a good read.

Just read it.  Well worth reading.

Has one of the funniest pictures of Ricki working with horses and he has a great mo and a mullet and he looks furious.  I laughed particularly hard.

I've found that it depends on the book for me - if one really catches my attention, I can read it cover to cover in a day. If it doesn't, it can wind up in my bookcase for months before I pick it up again. I'd suggest going to the Phoenix store and reading the first chapter. If feel like reading more, buy it. If not, buy it for someone else

I was disappointed that it was only 250 pages, that's how much I enjoyed it.  Really gives an insight into football in this country and the Phoenix/AW's.  Was well written and it kept my interest.  Call me what you will but Russell Gray spelt the last name of the Phoenix's oldest striker 'Coveny' and 'Coveney' within one page.  Thought I'd let everyone know that I'm a troll of sorts.

One tiny complaint is that I thought they should have hastily tried to include something about our victory over Bahrain and heading to the world cup.  The book was completed before the first leg.  I know it would have been very difficult to have it released when it was (aka just before Christmas and just after our victory) as there is more to releasing a book than writing it and putting in on a shelf.

Still, quality read and worth $35.

I recommend it. Bought it in Wellington when there for the Bahrain game. I guess they produced it in advance of the World Cup playoffs with the idea that they would sell a few more should the All Whites win...

Ah, looks like a mix up between Mt Smart Stadium and Mt Wellington the national league club.

Said some interesting things when talking abouty Nix players, Mulligan thought he was too good for the A-League when he arrived and got a rude shock and Ricki thought Smeltzy owed him personally and that should have been enough to keep him at the Nix. Didn't mention G** when talking about the players he signed going into Season 2...

Book wasn't wonderful but gave a good high level view of his life, would have liked to have read about a few things in more detail such as Nix season 1 and 2 and a bit more about being at the World Cup itself.

I finished reading it on Saturday. Really enjoyed it especially the chapters on the Phoenix and how the club was set up and how he assembled the squad.

I thought his playing career could have included a bit more detail though considering it was supposed to be about him. There was almost more about the Nix.

Was interested to find out that he retired from international football at the age of only 28.

SH, if I were you, I would seriously look at getting a divorce from your parents. If I recall correctly, they have failed to buy you a ticket to the World Cup in South Africa and now they haven't bought you RH's book. That has to be the last straw, surely?
