At the start of the season Ricky Herbert said that if the team didnt make the playoffs he would walk out of the job.... what are the odds of that happening? The team were so negative all season - there is need for a re shuffle in the backroom staff. Starting with Herbert.  Thoughts?

Sure... Its all ricki's fault we became the most successful nz a-league side.
I HATE HIM!
The team was so negative all season?

Feedback, I don't recall Ricki saying that.

If your post is inacurate/a guess/wishful thinking/pointless trouble causing (take your pick) perhaps you would have the manners to correct it and apologise for misinforming us.

If I am wrong and there is a record of Ricki saying that, I will apologise to you.

I know Ricki said anything less that a top four this season was unacceptable. I'm sure he did allude to his job being on the line if he failed. Would like to see those posts/quotes if anyone could find them.

BTW I'm for him staying. Not a brilliant finish. But it's been an overall upward climb - with some dips - so let's not do anything drastic. Just learn our lessons, look very hard at who we have, who we want to keep, and who we need to transform the Nix into a better team.

I'm confident Ricki can do that. But if he doesn't take us to the top four next year then all bets are off. I suspect Terry might also feel the same way.

Yes.
I would also say.. Stupidest poll.

This sh*t is what I dread at the end of a season or after a loss. Stupid/Idiotic polls.

Have you been watching Newcastle thinking it was the Phoenix? From what you write that is very likely. It's OK son, you're gona be all right [pets him over the head]

if ricki needs to go because of the way we played this year then kosima and van egmond must be out the door as well seeing as they were tipped for the top 4 no worries

i think we need another coach  - keep ricki but have another guy also for the fact i think we need some new tactics on how to attack (might be fixed next season with new recruits) because we seem to have the ball in the box a lot but never take a shot thats got to be an issue

Durante for Costa and Christie for McKain when you are 1-0 down needing to win - Brilliant!

Shouldn't be sacked though. Just look at CCM and Melbourne to see what stability gives you.

A sign above the goal saying "SHOOT!"
Thats all a new coach could say anyway.

ahhaah, well said Stephan. A little bit like in Forrest Gump when the crowd at the stadium spells "R-U-N F-O-R-R-E-S-T" !
hey that's actually a good idea. we should make a banner and use it at home/away. that would remind the boys!!

I was just thinking that. (Banner and Forest gump)
I have been thinking of getting a Proper banner made too for the next season.
Just what it will say.. I cant be sure.

I recall a comment to the papers of something similar to what's inferred above... Ricki tactically does play a pensive defensive game plan, but I feel that one of the reasons he doesn't often go for more up top is a lack of technical ability and vision in the midfield.  So his tactic is to scrap, and slowly break team's down.  This season had a large reliance again on Smeltz, although to be fair to Herbert I felt the team looked a lot better with a class midfielder in Fred steering the team forward and making the defenders come off Smeltz a bit more to open him up.  The true test for Herbert will be next season without Smeltz as his master marksman, he will need to probably open it up a bit more.  I think the back 5-6 players we currently have are doing a very manful job, it's now a matter of how they select their strikers and also what type of midfield the 'Nix end up with.  I would expect a more flowing game plan next year as the hold 'em and hit 'em approach of knocking it to Smeltz isn't possible next season.  Hopefully they get the players with the 'on the ball' skill to perform those roles.

Those plastic chairs must be very comfortable, coz Ricki did remain seated quite a lot during the season. Thank God, he didn't get the Luxury Alex (sorry) Sir Alex Ferguson Model. He may have sat there during half-time..

He was up quite alot too.
Its mostly his coaching staff ive found who shouts orders.
Which would make sense, Ricki passes on info to coaching staff for them to shout while he remains focused on the game

I voted No for a New Gaffer, with a clause he gives up the All Whites Job..

Coaches should be telling players what to do they spend most time in training with them, but it should be the Manager (i.e Ricki) who should be getting involved in the game, you see most top flight managers roaming the technical area like they're lions in a cage, demanding that little bit extra from their players and reminding them of the tactics they started the game with. The managers who sit back and watch the game from the directors box or the comfort of the "plastic chair' end up getting relegated, although  having said that Lawrie Mckinna rarely gets off his seat neither does Frank farina

Oh for God's sake! What has how long he stood up or sat down on the sideline got to do with anything?

He's done alright. Some of his substitutions have been baffling, to say the least, but he's done reasonably well with the players we've got. Players determine the tactics we use, which is why I think we were a pretty dour, unexciting outfit this season. I expect, as we get more ability and creativity into the team, our tactics will change and we'll become a far more attack-minded side next year.

Most coaches say that building a succesful team takes years. Jeez, Ricki had to start from scratch with, literally, no players. Judge him at the end of next season.Jag2009-01-24 13:24:57

Agree with everything you said. I think that he wanted to play an expansive attacking game at the start of the season but it just didn't work out like that as players didn't play to their potential or were kack (Gao).

Ricki has done a fine job. I'd personally keep him. How would everyone have judged him if at the start of the season he'd said "No we are not aiming to make the top 4"?

However I have heard rumors of him going overseas...

He's off to a UEFA course I hear...
It's residential and he'll be focussing on Touchline Prowling, Pitchside Ranting and Gesticulation 101. There's also an optional workshop being offered in the HairDryer Technique.

Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

I am far from convinced that Ricki is anything special BUT he has, in my mind, earned the opportunity to coach the Nix in season 3. I think Terry has also confirmed his intention for Ricki to continue. If that is the situation then the focus needs to be on the learnings from this season e.g.

Pre-season program - we peaked too early

Lack of leadership when the wheels were falling off in the first few rounds - I don't think, with the way McKain and Sigmund have developed as leaders on the park, and the obvious strong team culture that developed in the 2nd half of the season, that this will be a problem next season

On occassion strange, imo, substitutions and tactics - presumably Ricki will review these with some wise heads

Playing players out of position (I still cringe when I think of Dodd at DM)

Why key recruitments didn't work (Gao & Kwasnik) or happen (2nd striker)

How the conflict of interest, if it continues, with the Nix coach also being the All Whites coach will be managed next season - it is, again imo, no coincidence that the wheels fell off, and took a month to put back on, when there was a conflict between the Nix and All Whites duties

With the foundation laid this year, good off season recruitment and lessons learned we will be in very good shape next season.

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

nix and all whites games dont clash. I dont understand this argument. A league breaks for international window now. AWs is very very part time job for ricki and i dont see how you can claim it affects his ablilty to coach the nix, especially now that the games dont even clash

leave Ricki alone...........he's done an Ok job considering the player talent we have.

At the start of the season if someone said we would be watching the last game of the season with the lads still in the hunt for top 4 then we would have said GREAT!!!!!!!!

If someone had said that we were in that position despite not getting Porter(or an adequate striking replacement)r and your other ace attacking options Gao and Kwasnik turning out to be a dogs, then you would have said well done Ricki.

We played a style of football that suited the players we had. it was a succesful style. You can't play like Barcelona or even Adelaide if the players are technically not up to it. There was a lot to like about this season, don't bag the coach.

He's a good coach and I don't know of anyone out there who would do a better job. It wasn't a terrible season by any means. i weould like to see Ricki there at the club for at least another 3 seasons. Then we can review how he's gone.
