I may be new to the forum, and I did post a pretty frivolous post earlier on in the Chants section about getting Herbert out, but Ive been involved in football for a reasonably long time and watched the Phoenix since game one (all be it via Sky as I live in Auckland), and Im serious when I say that Herbert is not the man to take the Phoenix forward and be a serious contender in the A-League this season (or any other).
Im sure Im going to get flamed, but lest take a look at the stats for the club since it joined the A-League (the table is ranked by Points won in the past two seasons, not including last weekends games):
Key: P-W-D-L-GS-GA-GD-P
Queensland Roar 42 18 13 11 61 46 15 67
Melbourne Victory 42 18 11 13 68 56 12 65
Adelaide United 42 17 13 12 62 48 14 64
Central Coast Mariners 42 17 11 14 65 57 8 62
Sydney FC 42 15 13 14 62 55 7 58
Newcastle Jets 42 13 13 16 46 60 -14 52
Wellington Phoenix FC 42 12 10 20 48 68 -20 46
Perth Glory 42 10 12 20 57 79 -22 42
Herbert has lost the most amount of games (equal with Perth Glory), has the second worst goal scoring record, has the second worst goals conceded record and therefore the second worst goal difference record.
The top 5 teams (out of 8 until this season) are only separated by 9 points, but there is a 12 point gap between the 5th ranked team overall (Sydney FC) and the Phoenix and hence that means a huge gap of 21 points between the Phoenix and the top ranked team (Queensland Roar).
How can this be judged a success?
Was anybody really surprised at not only the defeat at the weekend but also the nature of the defeat?
Im sure Ricki is a nice bloke doing his best (All Whites commitments not withstanding) and his mo makes a cracking T-Shirt, but how long are Phoenix fans to accept the mediocrity and inept performances that we have seen from Herberts side week in week over the past two seasons?
