See link below to Sydney Morning Herald story. There appears
to be a loophole in the salary cap. Players who come in
mid-season, to replace injured colleagues, don't get counted.
This has allowed some clubs to bring in stars and go way over the
limit - for the current season at least. Michael Bridges at
Sydney FC and John Aloisi at the Mariners get mentioned. The
suggestion is that a player earning 50K goes out, and one worth
$500K comes in. Since the total cap is only $1.8m, this is
pretty significant.
If this goes on I can see a niche occupation arising: breaker of arms of marginal, inexpensive squad members on demand by team management.
