Season Preview: Wellington

Hey guys, firstly if I'm in the wrong place let me know. I think I've got it right.

Anyway, I've been writing up season previews for each of the A-League clubs and I've ventured here to get some feedback for what I've written about the Phoenix at the following link:

http://thebigtip.com.au/football/20102011-league-preview-part-3

It's a little out of sync as I wrote a lot of it before I heard of the North signing, but regardless...have I missed anything? Any glaring errors? This is just something I do as a hobby but all the same I want to make sure I'm on the money when I post something.

I tell you what, it's a lot easier coming here to ask for feedback (mostly cause I enjoy watching Wellington play) over the Sydney forum...I reckon if I go there as a Victory supporter I'll get eaten alive

Thanks in advance.

OT: Good write-up for the Phoenix - not sure that North is a huge upgrade on McKain (who may well have been our second best player last season), but getting him signed was a big coup for us.
The pressure is on the front-line for me - Ifill is great for this league, but Greenacre, McAllister and Pavlovic still have to truly prove themselves in the league. But still think we're top 4 material.

Some editor I have hey?

I mentioned it a little in the piece, but I reckon the intangibles that Wellington gain with North & Durante together is the biggest gain. Not saying that McKain wasn't any good, he was definitely one of the most underrated players over here, more that any time you can resurrect a title-winning defensive combo it's usually going to be a pretty big upgrade.

Yep, i'd feel more comfortable with McKain back there - North is an adequate replacement but I don't think he's as good as Jon.

Can't disagree with anything else in the article, though.

I'm a little worried about all of this positivity however - if Robbie Slater predicts that we'll place top 2 my head might explode.valeo2010-08-02 22:31:50

Mckain and Durante formed a pretty good understanding between themselves too. But oh well,North is probably the best replacement we couldve possibly got.

Allegedly

"They built their season around their fortress at Westpac Stadium, equalling the record for most matches undefeated at 14 before being beaten by Sydney."

It's technically correct that our loss at Sydney did indeed end our home streak. However, if the point is in regards to us making Westpac Stadium our fortress, it'd probably be more on-topic to mention that said loss occurred at FMG Stadium in Palmerston North, rather than at the Ring of Fire

Other that that, good work, will give a link on Twitter tomorrow.

I don't know if McKain is that much taller but Durante and North seem quite similar in height to me - possibly why I think they might not be as good together in the middle

Cheers man, appreciate it a lot.

Yeah, that's something I should have clarified. Mistake on my part. It would have been good though if there was some sort of technicality that kept the record going considering the loss at Westpac. Any record that gets taken away from Sydney is a good one don't you think?

@ Valeo, McKain is 5 centimetres taller than North according to Wiki.

Certainly agree with you there!  We've still got the "undefeated in Wellington" record going, which is great for marketing and is still something to be proud of, but yeah, technicalities

Dura was better and not too far behind Ifill in my books.

I'm not sure what you are basing your comparison on Valeo

North and Durante were a championship winning duo, McKain and Durante were third. I expect they will click again and Durante was instrumental in getting North to come him here, he is sure of him. Plus North has played more games than McKain for the Socceroos.

I think he is more than an adequate replacement.

I do agree that all this positive stuff is a worry, it's unfamiliar territory.

Looking at the way other teams have strengthened also means we will need to be on to it from the start

Sigmund- barnstorming run- wins corner- GOAL => NZ to the world cup. Pace isn't everything, and he improves. Just look at his first few games and how he quickly got up to speed after that. He'll be back to his best.

I see he had a team mate by the name of Dylan Macallister in that 1999 team.

I know, I know, its serious!

haven't most of us quietly forgotten that aberration of a game/venue/place etc ever actually took place?  Is group amnesia a sufficient technicality do you think?

Those who forget the lessons from history are doomed to repeat them. In this case, the lesson being "don't play regular season matches Palmerston North"

Yup. Bring the next one to Arena Mayfly in W(h)anganui (no Southland poofs allowed). HRH Laws would be happy to have you here, so long as you can change the team name to the Poenix.

Yeah, I remember Aussie being very impressive in that tournament. Think North was playing right wing, with scummy dreadlocks. But it's quite impressive how many faces from that team are still kicking it professionally:
Van Stratten, Srhoj, Kennedy, DMac, SMac, Pantelis, Brain, Fyfe, Byrnes, Cansdell-Sheriff, a quite impressive list (without any total superstars of Viduka/Kewell/Culina calibre/reputation).

As cultured as Che Bunce's left foot and as profilic as John Lammers

Fourfourtwo: Reasons why your team won't win the A-League

"I'm struggling to find a reason for them to fail. Except for the Mad Miron factor, of course." - End of the Gold Coast's reasons, need this for the Phoenix part to make sense.

"Wellington Phoenix - See above...and they've not only maintained their strength, they've bolstered their side with the addition of Jade North in defence. They don't even have a mentallist coach at the helm with the World Cup-hardened (and undefeated) Ricki Herbert - and their home stadium is a fortress with record numbers of fans. This could be the year to embarrass the AFC..."
