Newcastle, Queensland & the new franchise from NZ are chasing released Chinese International Shengqing Qu, but Qu was saying that he hasn't contact any of the 3 clubs officially, because his adelaide contract ends in June.

Meanwhile, Leilei Gao's Chinese Super League club "Beijing Guo'an" confirms yesterday that they havn't sign any contract with the Finland side "Mypa" about Gao's transfer.  This means that Leilei Gao is still available for Riki Herbert & the Phoenix. (At the moment)

After David Carney and Leo Bertos I felt Leilei Gao was the next best left winger in the A League so would be pretty dissapointed if we didn't get one of the shining lights of the end of last season.

It's going to be hard to keep any former Knights players that aren't kiwi in the country, after the farce they went through. I think they should worry about representing their own country this time rather than follow in the footsteps of the Knights staff and sign about 15 players of other nationality.

The league rules mean they can no longer sign 15 of other nationalities unless 11 of them are Australians, so I think we're pretty safe.

The V2 Carney... ?  Old one foot ?  He'd have struggled in Capital 13.

I will try to find the blog, but all I know at the moment is Leilei Gao is still in Finland and training with Mypa, the news yesterday from his club means they havn't sign a deal but I don't know whether they are in nego or not, but if Riki contacts him now there may be a chance to get him back to NZ, who knows.

Can anyone send a email or whatever to Riki??

The transfer talk between "Beijing Guo'an", "Mypa", Gao, & Gao's agent has stopped due to the sudden quit of Gao's agent.  This may ends Gao's Finland league hope because the proper season kick starts next weekend. 

Rumour in China says actually the real problem is that Beijing Guo'an wants too much transfer fee and Mypa couldn't afford it. 

Also from Leilei Gao's blog:
he wrote an article about his disappointment but only about his feelings no story told. he says he is disappointed with the Chinese transfer system which gives the clubs too much power over the players.  And he mentioned he is in Hong Kong at the moment.


If we can't afford the transfer fee we could get him on loan right?  There is a chance guys.  And I will keep updating any news related.

Yesteday Gao was a 60 min substitute for Mypa in 1st round of Finland league but the transfer situation still remains unclear.

Beijing Guo'an now wants ￥10 million (around $2 million NZD) transfer fee from Mypa.

Gao says if he cant play overseas then he will consider to retire.

This finally got me to make a post.

The 4 foreign player rule i think is great. But, as you say that the Nix have got a bonus in the sense that both Aussie and NZ are NOT foreign. The reason that he FFA have made that rule is so that the A-league does not develop NZ footbal anymore than it has to. As much as i'd like to see NZ football develop, having Aussie organizations doing it just doesn't seem right. The rest of the A-League teams having NZ players in them is a very small chance, except for Perth., (maybe the Jets.)
So, Phoenix having NZ and Oz players inside the salary cap does not make it specifically a bonus overall as it's Aussie football that benefits from having more aussies play in the a-league and thus developing further. As a naturalized aussie from Finland, and having spent some time in NZ, my loyalty goes in this order in the A-League: Sydney FC, Wellington Phoenix. Yes........the nix are my 2nd team and i will be behind them as long as they are not playing SFC.  Good luck for the season ahead i hope it's SFC-WPFC Grand Final and SFC wins.

Confirmed today that Leilei Gao has joined Mypa, so all over for us now.

We really need the quality like Gao so hope Herbert could find one.

I am suprised there aren't more responses to this thread as Gao was in my opinion the only consistent player from last season and had plenty of "X" factor which will be crucial this season for us.

Gao has joined Mypa for FREE!! yes!! it's a free transfer.

Last year Gao joined the Knights on a Free Loan from Beijing Guo'an, and at the end of last year Gao's Beijing contract finishs so Gao became a free agent in the market.  Unfortunately the Knights licence was revoked and it takes SOOO LOONG for the phoenix to get the licence so we missed such an opportunity & can't re-sign Gao for FREE.

For Chinese players there is always a "silent contract" with the club, that is the Chinese club have the piority to sign first, so even though Gao is un-contracted Beijing still have the right to say Yes or No on Mypa's case.

Just today Beijing agrees to let Gao to sign with Mypa without transfer fee. (initially Beijing wants around $2 million NZD transfer fee).  Because Gao was saying if he can't play overseas he will retire, this gives Beijng no chance.

About $100K NZD a year in Beijing, I think should get a bit more in Mypa.  But it doesn't mention the salary in the article.

^^ Isn't the cap AUS$1.8 million (NZ$2 million)? anyway still a big chunk but worth it for a player of his skill and ability

Leilei was good on the left, but unsupported.  As soon as Ricki said it was okay to go forward, we had some results.  Are backs always 6ft 6 and forwards always small blokes?
