Now, a major(ish) dilemma occured in the zone (and various other pockets of the RoF) last night, due to confusion as to whether shirts off applied to the Nix being ahead in the final 10 minutes of the game or after the 80th minute mark. Similar confusion reigned during the penalty shoot-out vs. Perth.

My opinion is that the tradition should apply to being ahead after 80 minutes, for a couple of reasons;
Firstly, due to stoppage time, it's impossible to know exactly when there will be 10 minutes to go, for example, based on the current guidelines, if there are 3 minutes and 24 seconds of stoppage time played, shirts off should begin at 83 minutes 24 seconds, or if extra-time is played, 113 minutes and 24 seconds.

Secondly, in the case of a penalty shoot-out, there is no set time at all, and it doesn't seem right that the Phoenix should be winning at the business and of a match without chests being beared for the boys' efforts.

Your thoughts please.

Last night we weren't winning with 10 mins to go.
110 was the right time for shirts off.

You took yours off early didn't you?

In extra time, why couldn't it be at the 20th (110 minutes total) minute?  We were ahead with 10mins remaining in regulation extra time.

Having read that literally, as written, yes I was wrong.

But isn't the spirit of the tradition that essentially "from that point onwards" (ie. the 80th minute) "if the Phoenix are to go in front" that shirts will be removed?

Anyway regardless there was not enough shirt removal yesterday. And tradition needs clarification for clarity in future finals.

P.S. Does this happen for away games also??

Because there was an excuse for getting them off earlier

Bah! The way I see it, it was past the 80 minute mark and we took the lead. That's shirts off, and that's when I got my shirt off. May have been 5 minutes early (when Ifill scored) but I could sense victory and that's the idea of all this anyway.

Fully with you Oska. If we take the lead at any point after 80 minutes, shirts go off.

I think this makes sense - if we take the lead past 80 mins, shirts off. However there does need to be consensus, because I've had no idea the last two games.

Pathetic. Not apathetic.

This is a very important issue that requires clarification.

The Fever Zone tradition is that shirts are removed with ten minutes to go, if the Phoenix are leading.  They will also be removed if the Phoenix go in front during the last ten minutes

Pretty clear cut. "last 10 minutes". as soon as extra time starts,it is no longer in the last 10 minutes of the game. Removing your shirt with 20mins to go in extra time is a jynx, gives too long for the opposition to score and us to look like idiots

Is right.  If it was "The Fever Zone tradition is that shirts are removed at the 80th minute," then any time after that would suffice.  In an ET scenario, the correct time is 110 minutes.

I also removed my shirt early, and I apologise forthwith.

Guys, before you go spouting on about the 110th minute, pay attention to when Ifill scored the 2nd goal.

It was after 5 minutes into the first half of overtime. "Last 10 minutes" in the first half of overtime.

What's wrong with that?

You can't have your cake and eat it too.

"That 10 minutes was the wrong 10 minutes" WTF?!

I agree with the OP, it should be "leading or go into the lead after 80 minutes". Then people can stop pissing and moaning about which 10 minutes is the "correct" one.Ard Righ2010-03-09 13:44:58

Does the above rule still apply if you're not sitting in the FZ? If not, then perhaps I was exempt?

Otherwise I had mine off after the third goal so apologies if I'd reneged on the rule.

I think the only way to settle this is through a poll.  I've heard it phrased "shirts off after 80 minutes" and "shirts off with ten to go" so I was unsure also.  I do think that in extra time to take shirts off at 110 minutes is stupid as penalties can go on for however many minutes.  So I took my shirt off when Ifill scored as it was past the 80 minute mark.

Big whoop, wanna fight about it?

I think its a moot point anyway, you say "oh but if you take your shirts off early (at 105 minutes) you jinx it" and yet there was no jinxing - we went on to score again.  I'm not saying we'll take our shirts off earlier during regulation time or anything, but extra time is so rare that it should have special rules.  I stand by my decision to shirt off at 105.

I propose that the official rules for removing shirts be handed out with the song sheets.

I have followed the rule in the Zone, out of the Zone, in my lounge room, and in various hotel rooms when travelling. The only place I haven't followed the rule was in a pub in Hastings where large threatening-looking gents in patched leather jackets were sitting nearby. (It was the ojnly pub that would show the game rather than the rugby)
And North Queensland scored in the 94th minute... you could call that lesson learned.

My point is, following that wording it is impossible to know when the last 10 minutes will start, without knowing the exact amount of stoppage time to be played.

I maintain that that can't be done until we have 7 goals.  I repeat, 7 goals, not only if we have 7 more than them, just 7.

We were going to do pants off in the Gold Coast game but the players were too lazy to bag another.

last time I checked there were two halves of over time, though I am prepared to be proved wrong on that....

I'm happy either way ("after 80 mins" or "last 10 mins") so I think we should have a vote.

for what it's worth there is a major draw back to both that should be considered. If we do "after 80 mins" and we score in the first couple mins of over time the opposition has around 30 mins to score.....

if we do last 10 mins people will allways prematurely take off their shirts due to the unbridled excitement that acompanies going ahead in extra time. For co-ordinating purposes I think maybe "after 80" is easiest, though I have been refering it to the "10 mins to go" rule for 3 years now so am a little reluctant to change:)

I have taken my shirt off every time we've been winning at the 80 minute mark at home ...or when we hit the lead at any point after that time.

My shirt came off as soon as Ifill's shot hit the back of the net....and stayed off as we banged in another....we hit the lead after the 80 minute mark is the way I see it, and will do so regardless of what anyone says.

I've also had the pleasure of taking it off once in the Sydney Football Stadium in the 2-1 win over there last season and I'm fairly certain I'll be removing my shirt in the SFS around 11:35pm (nzt) on Saturday night....
