Maybe he would be better off looking to go to a championship, or League 1 team. Didn't  a couple scouts approach him after the Wales game?

At the Nix he'll be behind Durante, McKain and Dodd for CB.

If he is gauranteed to get a decent amount of gametime then it would be brilliant to have him, he is a quality defender.  However, if he is only going to be getting the odd game here and there then he should try to get a contract with another a-league team.  There's no point in his talent being put to waste by having him bench-warming.

So he's that good that you'd rather see him play against us than see him on our bench?

That's funny.

I just don't want to see good Kiwi talent go to waste, so whatever team he can gets into, I hope they are a quality team and I hope he gets decent gametime.  Whether that team is the Phoenix or not I don't mind (although I'd prefer he came to the Phoenix if he'd get enough gametime).

I understand your sentiment, but he can't be that much of a "talent" if your concern is that he'll be a benchwarmer of the team that finished bottom of the league.

He'll be cover for Lochead as well - he's played left back before and is a natural left footer.

McKain - saw him captain the Olyroo's v us in 04 - was a beast at the back we never got a sniff while he was on.

So, is it possible that he, or one of the other three named here, is being seen as a potential to fill the right back role, rather than CB?

I do recall a game or two last year (NZ A vs Fiji?) where Sigmund impressed going fwd from the back (like a wing back, though starting from a CB position); much as Lochhead impressed many of us at the start of the season when we were playing 4 at the back.

Fantastic, although I don't like the line from Ricki about how Siggy completes our defensive signings for the year. We still don't have a proper right back!! I guess it means Lia will probably try and play there.

Dodd has played an A-League season at Right back in a side that was pretty decent defensively (but absolute rubbish in front of goal).

Siggy can play anywhere.

Three for me, and two for them.

Isn't he a lefty though? Wouldn't want him at right back if that was the case!
I'd love to see Siggy command a place in the starting XI, probably with McKain next to him and Durante at RB and Lochy on the left. I'm so excited about our defense, how about a cheeky bet on us conceding the fewest goals in the league next season?

Great to see another good kiwi player step into the Phoenix. Shows that there is a path from local NZ football to the A-League if you are good enough.

I guess we will have to wait and see what the final defensive formation looks like. I personally would'nt dick around putting Durante at RB. He will be our defensive general this season and we need him calling the shots from CD.

I think the theory is that there is a lot of versatility in all four centre backs.  Dodd can play Right or DM as well, McKain can play midfield and DC, Siggy can play Left, Midfield and Centre, and Durante can play Right or Centre.

If you start two the other two can go on the bench and you have cover for most of the field.

The right back search hasn't been successful.  No one is standing out in the NZFC, reports say the trips to Melbourne and Sydney have discovered no one, and also say Mulligan wants too much money.  It's all rumour, but if you can't sign anyone better than a Dodd/Lia/Plodder option then you work out how you do it with the players you have.

Yeah... but only as long as we have someone at right back who can respond quickly and intelligently to those shots Durante calls!

Siggy is a Blenheim boy! Great news!

We just need to be sure to keep attractive cousins and livestock out of the crowd so he can focus on the game is the only thing.

Durante won't be the CD general - McKain will.

Durante is actually rather overrated IMO - you've paid over the odds.
