Sunday News (John Matheson masquerading as somebody else this time) running a further episode in his longstanding anti-Elliot campaign today. appaling journalism. another one of his "news" stories riddled with personal and subjective comment. if you cant find somebody to say what you want to about a player SN/John, then at least have enough integrity to call it a opinion/comment article and put your own name to it.

I would be happy with Elliot, but not as a marquee. I thought he played well at the olympics and he was quality at Fulham.

If we have him,it may as well be at marquee. He'd be quality.

Allegedly

2 years ago he would have been a fantastic marquee, but now not quite as good.

just read the sunday news - what a disgusting piece of 'journalism'

'door slammed shut' 'one dimensional game' 'was never going to be a success' what a spiteful rant.

why such hate matheson?

someone much better informed than you saw his ability and made him a regular in the fulham side until injury got in the way

that sunday news "article" was a joke. Simon would be a quality signing (even though he may not be positionally what we need)

the good thing was that the sport editor told someone to "give themselves an uppercut" for suggesting RH got the sack

Agreed, surely Brockie needs to be signed.

i dont know about elliot, i think we are already overloaded with midfielders and devoid of anyone capable of partnering smeltzy for more than 45 mins(coveny).
sign a brockie or a  boyack up front.

Agree that we are terribly exposed upfront and heaven help us if Smeltz gets injured. However he has hardly been living on a wealth of opportunities being created by our midfield. The central midfield combinations to date of Dodd, Ferrante and Johnson have been disappointing to me from the perspective of playing decent balls forward. I'm looking forward to seeing Brown get a start and hope he adds that bit of quality but if Elliot is fit then he is the finished article and if a guest spot was an option I'd be grabbing him.

Grabbing Elliot does not mean the search for a striking partner and genuine cover for Smeltz needs to be foregone, we have a spot for a marquee player.

We should have signed Brockie as cover for Lia.
OK, he's not exactly cover, but there wasn't much point signing Muscat when Mulligan can play either side, and Sigmund can play right back.
That's plenty of cover there; would have given us a keen striker and still left the marquee spot open ...

What's wrong with playing Costa for 45 & Cov for 45.  Or even give Costa an extended go at the job hes being paid to do.nzyido2008-09-09 08:09:40

Well you don't want to rely on a planned change each week, hardly helps with those funny things called tactics.

from the player rating threadon the new cal game

elliott 9 - Excellent, very good passer of the ball, values posession highly and doesn't resort to long ball nonsense. Very impressed with him.

Elliott needs to be playing like every week to be on form and fit for that important worldcup home and away game.

But in all seriousness theres no chance he will come to the Phoenix unless his agents cant sort something out.But a max 7 or so weeks over a year at another club?not really ideal

At least Elliott showed something in the All Whites game - Mulligan didn't. Not sure why we would be getting Brockie when we haven't even used Draper or Costa.

Because Brockie is to an extent proven at a higher level where Costa and Draper aren't

Yep. Hearfield couldn't make the Aussie Olympic team. Draper was in the NZ Olympic team. And he showed a little bit of potential against...Brazil! So I think it couldn't hurt to give Draper a chance up front, instead of Covs. Certainly if we are going to spend money on another under-23 Olywhite striker, who showed very little in the NZFC, Draper should get a run first. Brockie: He's no Joel Porter.

With all respect Mulligan has never played in the Premier League, or hasn't played there recently. Elliot's last games have been as an international representative (and MOM according to the match thread) and in the EPL.

Gosh I hope that is true. I think Elliot has the experience and a cool head which is what we need in our current situation. He will bring a confident and collected approach and should help us distribute the ball more effectively in midfield. I'd like to see him start alongside Tim Brown (who can fill the bruiser role) with the trinity in between them and Smeltz.

Just not Brockie ....please! A wonder strike against China and that's all he did. As Siggy said, the gulf between NZFC and A league is big and to the best of my knowledge Brockie has yet to prove himself at NZFC level. Brockie is definately a knee jerk suggestion.

Elliiot would be a very good signing. He'd be a big improvment over Johnson or Ferrante.

Brockie definetly wouldn't be the answer to all our problems, but I think he would add some spark and pace up front, his finishing isn't as good as Smeltz but I think he is actually more likely to create chances out of nothing than most of the current line up, his pace could also create space for Smeltz. I think his style could complement Smeltz more than Coveny does. He's also played in the A-League before and proved he is not out of his depth with the Knights, at Sydney he didn't get much of a chance.

Yeah I'm not completly convinced that Brockie is the one who can help us turn around and get the ball flying in the net, but is there a better option on offer?

By the way, if it's true the Elliot deal can surely only be positive
You know we belong together...

Great news if Elliot is available and we sign him up, never mind we probably should have had him a couple of weeks ago but better late than never.

Not so sure about Brockie, has the feel of a desperation signing and they seldom work out well. Muscat, Mulligan and Kwasnik fit into that category for my mind.
