It still baffles me why they can't open up some random channels between 100-999 to show games they have rights to.

Dont get me wrong, we are all going to be making an effort, it's just that I hope our individual e-mail really are being read. There are some people on here who really know how to write a sensible well thought out effort and I dont want to see it ignored.

Sydney are hoping for a solid season as are Fox Sports. Ratings plateaued on the back of Sydneys mediocre 2008-09, but this season well be delivering live coverage of all 142 games almost twice the total of season one our new Matchday Saturday, which will provide 11 hours of football, and extensions to our magazine shows and gameday coverage. Bigger and better. Bring it on.

from the SMH, very differing opinions...

Anyway, today I was asked if I'd like to forward my earlier "dry" comment to Sky Sports, so I did, I added a bit about Deaker and here's what I sent just now. I dont expect a reply for some reason.

Why does SKy Sports Co-ordinator make me feel like this??
We here at Sky are quite proud of keeping our heads buried in the sand. After all we know every New Zealander would literally kill to get home and watch a game of Rugby from the distant past. We pride ourselves in managing to get repeats of Rugby on as many of our sports channels as we can, not just the 24 hour totally dedicated "Rugby Channel" Also we like to annoy the hell out of viewers with endless repeats of Deaker Live as a bonus.

I didn't send this bit to Sky but this part of that news article by Peter Parusinni says it all....

With the recession the international television market is weak and rugby, despite all the hoopla, is still a fringe sport. To put things in perspective, in the large television rugby market of Britain, Europe's Heineken Cup final in May had 460,000 viewers. In contrast, soccer's Champions League final attracted almost 11.4 million.

Sky can't use the excuse taht the (non-phoenix) a-league games clash with other live sport - majority of games played at night - 7.30 or 8pm kick off so only live sport it would clash with would be league  (with time diff)- so no valid excuse that I can think off - defys logic.
Write in to sky - I know its good to vent your angst on this forum but take it further - sky need to know.

Irrelevant. We live in New Zealand not Europe so those numbers mean nothing.

That doesn't mean skys coverage isn't a disgrace (it is) but saying its a world game doesn't matter when Sky only broadcasts to New Zealand not the whole world.

Not really, in a Rugby dominated country such as ours, attendance figures are down and I'd say so too are viewing figures.

We have used the rugby comparisons quite frequently on this thread  sometimes humorously and sometimes angrily.

I think it is important to emphasise our issue with Sky is the lack of A-league coverage.

NOT interested in seeing our protest marginalised and dismissed by Sky as "anti- rugby" - its nothing of the sort.

Very true. Guilty!
I hope Sky have a re-think though. The point I was making was there are a lot of age group footballers out there whom would watch any live game. In comparrison to last season we are getting a lot less. I enjoyed watching up coming opponents to get a measure of how we might go. And some of those "other games" were also damn exciting and entertaining to watch.

What will probably get me, is that they will counter the argument by saying that there plenty of football because of EPL, MLS UEFA, CL on their channels as it is and that A-League is more of the same thing.

So it is important to say that we have huge interest in localised football like A-League and with some NZFC because we are New Zealanders with personal stakes in it.

I hope a sensible compromise can be achieved where Sky can find a way to show us all the games.

As you're saying LG... we have an interest in what a lot more of the players in the League are up to. plenty of ex-Nix players in other squads, plenty of new players in the A league we want to keep an eye on too...who's going to be a threat when the Nix play them ...We need the intel Sky,..its in the national interest!

Yeah AWB, I'd prefer "Quantity" A-League and NZFC, and "Quality" Football..not the other way round.

My email to SKY read:
What is going on with your A-League coverage? We've always had all the games shown either live or with a short delay. Although seeing games delayed for things like live cricket on muliple channels simultaneously(!) has been a common annoyance, it was better than pretending the A-League doesn't exist.

Looking at 10pm Thursday night, when the season opener kicks off, I see a rugby magazine show on SS1, followed by filler programmes including a REPEAT of a Prime TV programme. SS2 has nothing but filler programmes of old content. SS3 has kayaking, a magazine show and a repeat of Indy Cars. Obviously none of these programs have any priority rating - it's all fillers and repeats.

So why is a game, in which at least one All White will play, from a NZ-relevant competition in the world's biggest sport being ignored?

Going forward to the Friday night, you have an all-Aussie line-up. Cricket of England v Australia and Aussie Rules. There is Rugby league between a couple of Aussie teams but at least that's from a league with a NZ team, so justifiable. These choices would only seem to make sense if we're watching Sky Australia instead of Sky NZ. Only the NRL match has any NZ context, so you'd expect one of the two available channels to have the NZ-relevant football match.

Bottom line - if you're going to prioritise filler and foreign content over actual NZ-relevant matches, I don't need to continue to pay you $115 a month. I'd be better off spending that on a bigger monthly internet allowance and watching games streamed on-line.

Why the change this season? Please tell me the on-line guide merely has an error. Five games a weekend over three 24x7 channels must surely get room for inclusion, even if some them aren't live. You usually show more games than that from leagues in which there is no NZ involvement, so why treat NZ like it doesn't matter?

Response:
Initially our contract for the A-League were to show LIVE Phoenix games only, with no rights to show any others. Fortunately we were able to extend our contract terms to include all games though please be aware that not all of these will be LIVE, and because of the late contract change we will play these games where we can. Some we can bring in LIVE others will either be delayed or shown where available.

Guys,

I for one love to watch live football, no matter what league. I am not one for giving out links, but if you do want to watch any game live, just go onto the internet and you can watch the live feed from Aussie!

www.myp2p.eu then click on live sports! you can choose any game you like from there Free in HD if you have the Bandwidth!). Watch EPL anything, you can even do what i do and watch LIVE League 2 matches in England.. i love following my beloved Southend UTD!.

Me, i'll be in front of my big screen, using my media centre to  watch the opening game this Thursday! otherwise, you can sit and Watch World of Golf, Motorsports hour ITM Fishing Show or the 25th Replay of a load of blokes running round like headless chickens in SA getting smashed and embarassed!

Once again, no actual answers.

We still have no idea.
1, How they can continue to claim all games weill be shown delayed, despite the SKY guide quite clearly showing they are not.
2, How they justify filling an eveing with filler when they have live sports availabel that do not cost them a cent.

Yes, your contract is Phoenix only live, but I would have thought your obligation to customers was to show live sport whenever practical, not just to do the contractual bare minimum.

I also notice the new heads of football programming have been spectacularly quiet on this.  Anyone get the impression they are Premier League snobs who think the A-League is beneath them so must be beneath everyone else ?

Well then, all the more reason for a dedicated football channel, which I for one would subscribe to and then not subscribe to the other sports channels.

I'd choose the 4 channels plus football channel option myself.
If sky did that, more space for live coverage of A League...and Kayaking too.

Well you can forget about CL and UEFA, as ESPN no longer have the rights for these, its gone to Fox and Setanta. MLS - cant stand the Yankie commentators! (Offence!! as they say when a team is attacking!) But EPL.. we get more live games than in UK!!

Was talking to my Dad and he said that they get about two games live, then the rest are pay per view! But the coverage is much better as all interactive!

But i agree, would love to have a dedicated channel for Football, and they could show some classic games! like (Liverpool v AC Milan) (Newcastle v Liverpool 4-3 1995-96) (Liverpool v Arsenal 1989) (Man U v Roma 7-1 2007) (Milan v Arsenal 1-5 2003)(Hereford Utd v Newcastle 2-1 1972)  TO NAME BUT A FEW.

I would watch those all day long if the misses allowed me to!

The best being my Hero Stan Collymore scoring the winner v Newcastle in 1995 and watching Kevin Keegan (Newcastle Manager) drop his head!! google the match if you never saw it!

Fact ---> ESPN has broadcast rights for "Oceania" from UEFA for Champions league and Europa league.
ESPN is bigger than north america.
Fact---> Sky NZ purchase it Premier league package direct from the premier league. We get a minimum of 6 live games a week plus highlights and a magazine show.

Can we act slightly rationally people, the Rugby Channel doesn't work so that means there is absolutely no chance that a Football Channel would be commercially viable because as much as a number of people on this site like to ignore Rugby is still king in NZ.

The Rugby channel doesn't work because they still keep showing the games on Sky Sports 1 anyway, if they removed all Rugby games/programmes and kept them exclusively on the Rugby Channel, subs would be up and it would work.
