If you look at the onscreen guide it's got all the games (well friday and saturday didn't check sunday) penciled in under 'Sky Sport TBC' or "Sky Sport'. So hopefully a good sign.

From a very selfish personal viewpoint, shame.  I like to sit at the ROF watching with headphones listening to Piney doing radio commentary.

I will try and find out I think the rights may not have been signed yet therefore no promos or ads can be run.

Not sure of the details but what I do know is when we were putting together some summer sports calendars for internal use we were told to leave out A-league as the rights were in negotiation.

Does this mean that TV viewers will be introduced to the 'Ring of Fire', rather than the 'Cake Tin'?

As I live away from Wellington I watch all games live on TV and I cannot express how stoked I am Piney has replaced Dewhurst. Game changer! Looking forward to feeling like I'm watching a quality product rather than an amateur one.

rights have not been signed yet - therefore no EPG or promo's can be run until this has been resolved.

This is absolutely piss poor from SKY but I guess you expect that from them. If Piney's confirmed surely it means they assume they will get the rights but thats terrible for hype and advertisements on their channels.

Oh yes! I'm not deluded but this will go a loooong way to helping me pretend at least. The fact we will have a commentator actually discussing/analysing football during the game is going to be awesome even though I think football fans have been owed that as a right (at the very least) for years.

Yeah OK mate, it's all SKY nothing to do with the FFA..

SKY actually have a preferred window to close these deals so they can have adequate amount of time to run promos and as you say build hype, but occasionally things don't always go to plan.  Bear in mind you only hear about the deals that are late and not the 100's that are signed with no fuss or delay.

Sky actually list the Nix vs Melb City game on the EPG as a replay on Monday at mid-day on Sky Sport.

Yet they don't list it as a live game on Saturday night.

Confusing bollocks...

All this talk of Piney commentating the Phoenix games. Are we jumping to conclusions? Did he say he was commentating on SKY? He only replied that he was commentating the games this season. Maybe he was refering to RADIO. Do we know for sure? Anyway, it's all an aside really because he's not affecting the game and as much as I  prefer Piney to Boring Square Jaw De Jong or Dewdrop, it's the Phoenix that stirs me up, oh yeah. Come on you Nix!

Sky do have a long and storied history of playing chicken with rights-holders to get cut price deals. So while the FFA are hopeless at times it's generally safe to assume that if a rights deal is late in being signed it's because Sky are trying to get a bargain.

For example: the cricket in South Africa last year, the cricket in South Africa this year, the 20/20 a few years ago, the EPL rights, and on and on and on.

This is really starting to puss me off.  Obviously I watch our away games on Sky, but I also watch most of the other games throughout the season. Was really looking forward to the Brisbane V Tards game on Friday night. The recent advert on Sky for their Sports coverage for November mentions Premier League football..................no mention of A-League.

did you even read what I wrote?  the deals you hear about are only a fraction of the deals that get signed - and yes some prove tricky but the overwhelming majority are signed nice and simple.

EDIT: Actually you are showing a bit of contempt here for SKY - I didn't say it was all the FFA's fault, I just said it wasn't all SKY's.
And yes SKY do like to get good value for rights and not overpay, and that means sometimes there is a difference of opinion in value - sounds similar to lots of different business negoiations to me.

Its commendable how much you like your employer, it really is.  But the thing is while Sky is trying to get the best value they can, that value could mean the metrics not being met (as how much they pay is one of them) which could result in the team not existing.

So sure, Sky should do whats best for its shareholders, but for some of the fans of the team that could be lost because of what Sky doesn't pay, Sky's shareholders wallets aren't as important as their teams existence.  Surely you can appreciate that.

It's not just shareholders though - you have not quite grasped this - if SKY pay what the FFA think the rights are worth (and I'm sorry but they are not worth as much as the FFA think they should be) then SKY will probably pass on some of the contents cost via a price increase - so the price hits all the customers.

I love the Phoenix - and I am in a position to offer a slightly more balanced view than some on this particular topic.  I wish that SKY would embrace football totally but the viewer numbers just don't stack up against League, Rugby etc.  But I hold hope that SKY will do what they can to keep hold of the football and do right by it - but that doesn't mean pandering to every whinge moan and complaint from football fans, we are really a sad bunch sometimes!  (yes that includes me)

Football is good business in many countries. It's an untapped source for SKY to get more viewers and revenue. It can't be to hard to sell that product in NZ.

I had SKY for a while exclusively for A-League and the World Cup, you get almost nothing for your money, no interviews, replays, anything except the pure games. Instead you get bombarded with commercials  on top of you $79 you pay a month.

I wish I could agree with you - but Rugby has such a stranglehold on this country at the moment that there isn't the numbers of viewers to make it worthwhile.

If Auckland can get an A-league franchise and it can successfully tap into the immigrant population in Auckland that are mostly football mad and dont' give a stuff about rugby we will be moving in the right direction.

I agree SKY could make a moral call to lead the movement to football and maybe take some content on and not make money from it for a while and see if they can build an audience but you can't blame them for being focused on $$ - after all it's a business first and foremost.

I'm not questioning your love for the Nix dude, >1500 posts means you must give quite the shark.

But surely whether you think people are biased against sky or not you can appreciate the opinion that with them being more or less the only player in NZ and they make so much money (especially if what Ryan said is true) and if they don't pay enough the Nix could no longer exist.  And if they were the one area the Nix fell short on people would be pissed, we don't know exactly (you might be in the negotiations meetings or email chain so may be in the know, I don't know).

You wont find many fans of the FFA in the forums but if the Nix get closed because Sky doesn't pay enough for them to exist, I'm going to absolutely blame Sky as its Sky's choice how much money they pay.

As Smithy said Sky has played content chicken before so with no information I'm not going to assume that Sky are 100% angelilc.

I've just filled out Sky's contact form to ask if they have the A-League this season.

Seems to me the most important time ever for fans to contact Sky and show there is interest in the Phoenix and A-League.

Contact them here (don't have to be a subscriber):

https://skytv.custhelp.com/app/contactus/emailus

I'm also phoning them at 0800 759 759

And I've posted on Sky Sport's Facebook page (just post under any topic - whatever the latest is):

https://www.facebook.com/skysportnz/posts

Also there's Sky's general Facebook page:

https://www.facebook.com/SKYnewzealand

And their Twitters:

I don't think it is Sky's responsibility to overpay for rights that they don't deem all that valuable - especially when they have the appropriate metrics to back this conclusion up.

Not many people watch the A-League in New Zealand or show much interest in it - that is just a fact.

Since negotiations have gone on so long, I can see Sky even more unwilling to pay what the FFA wants for it. They have two days to advertise the league they're televising and get the casual fan aware of it starting this weekend. Low viewers = less money from it for Sky.

This is tough as a football fan though, if only Sky had interested competition to give them a run for their money over the rights.

I wonder if SKY will have the pop-up adds this season for Nixs home matches or there waiting on next season/TV deal to do so.
