That would be a good signing (not the import - Smeltz). He is sharp and has the ability to do well in the A league.
Noticed you put this post on at 2:55 then edited it at 2:57. Was that because you needed to wipe the saliva off your keyboard before you could correct your spelling mistakes? Have you got a family photo you could post CelticFC, cos I think I knew you as a child and your name was Mark Moots and you grew up in a shoe box in the middle of Lindsay St in Timaru. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Smeltz had one good game for the all whites, just one, and all of a sudden he's a good signing.

One match does not make a player, if cov was at the game and killen filt he'd be our fourth choice striker,( i'd pick james b4 him.)

I would of given him  a trial first, his record in England is woeful.

If Smeltz is being picked up I would hope that he is not costing too much.

Haha i think they mean his wage. Surely wont be over $50,000!
Permalink Permalink

He should get a performance based contract, that'll encourages him.

50,000 at most.

How much a goal would he be worth? say we won't him to score ten goals a season, thats hmmm $5000 a goal. make it an extra thousand for each goal over that. Same for Covs.

Unconvinced about Smeltz...can't help feeling we could do better...

I dont think hes worth over $50,000 to be honest. A guy who scores 2 goals in 31 games in the conference would struggle to score ten in the A- League. Hope im severly wrong

score ten??

I'll be very happy if he score more than 5

I must say Smeltz Career has been dominated by two goals. I mean the only reason Adeliede signed him was because he scored two goals for Napier in the national league final. Then the reason he gets released by Halifax is because he can only manage 2 goals in a season. And now we sign him because he gets 2 goals in a game vs Wales. But there is a glimmer of hope. While playing for AFC Wimbledon he scored 26 goals in 50 games. But this was in the Ryman League? Whatever that is.

pretty mediocre signing IMO, couldn't hack it in the NSL, I can see him doing much in the A league..

I've no knowledge of him from any point in time but...

Terry McFlynn and Leo Bertos are both solid HAL players from the Conference level

Not quite, he was the leading scorer in NZ domestic football, ahead of a rampant Graham Little (he won the title most of the years around Smeltz's one season at NCR), hardly a one match wonder.

That feat is enough to have many on here suggesting we should use an import spot on Benjamin Totori.

Please don't sign Shane Smeltz.  Compare his record against that of Steve Devine in England.  If he can't make it at lest as a bit player in the conference I can't see him making it here. It would be best for NZF if he signed for the league two club that was banging down the changing shed door to get his number.  Does any one know who that club was??

buggar he's been signed. Hope herbert can get him to play like he did for the all whites

I hate to say it but it may be a case of the all whites coach using his club role to keep his international striker playing. This signing doesn't add up.

Why not ?

Smeltz is likely to be the next choice AW's striker behind Killen, he's a former leading goal scorer in NZ domestic football, we've used up (or are about to use up) all our import slots, and he's coming from the same level as Leo Bertos, Terry McFlynn and a number of other successful players to the A-League...

Sounds like basic maths to me. He's exactly the type of player the Phoenix should sign.

Leo Bertos was in the Conference after almost 100 football league apperences and as for Terry Mcflynn, he  played a similar number of games and scored twice as many goals!! as a midfielder!!
Smeltz had a great record in the Isthmian League but showen he wasn't good enough to step up to the conference.  All players in leagues ar not equal.  Also before the wales game he had played 15 AW gases and scored one goal.
I hope Shane can prove me wrong.

I personally like his signing, he will need to work hard but if he pulls it off it will be a great coup for the nix

Hopefully he is signed as just a backup, the phoenix are in trouble if he is there first choice striker.

Have to agree with Nembo, another NZ player, maybe not quite top level but has enough to be more than just making up numbers. So far the signs are positive.

We are never going to be able to afford a proven goal scorer.
Thiseam has the best mix of Kiwis since the first season of the Kingz. Fred, Wynton & Ivan.
Support the players, coach and team.

Who is George?

George was a placeholder for whatever Brazilian striker we sign.

The latest name linked was George dos Santos Paladini known as George.
