I was thinking today about the whole new sponsorship deal with Sony
and thinking about the NRL and Super 14.
All the NRL and Super 14 clubs have dropped the town name and are referred to as the Crusaders, Blues or Warriors.
Even more so in the media, and pretty much any coverage, the Warriors are always referred to as the Vodafone Warriors, undoubtedly giving extra mile to the sponsorship arrangement.
Has anyone thought about now referring to the Wellington Phoenix as the Sony Phoenix?
Its the first real major endorsement of its kind of a football club in NZ and from the rumours, quite a hefty investment. Why don't we start referring to the Phoenix as the Sony Phoenix. Its kinda our way or repaying Sony for their goodwill and support of the nix, it helps to keep the name Sony in the media thus giving more value to the sponsorshp deal and if by doing so, they get extra mileage from it, it may help with continuing past the current 1.5 + option arrangement. Could be a good lesson to learn from our fellow NZ based aussie franchises. Come to think of it, you always hear the Harvey Norman Breakers too...

One of the main reasons Wellington Phoenix has got great support
from the general non football public in Wellington is because of
the name.I dont think anyone should think otherwise to remove it
would take something away identifying ourselves and to me any way
would be a major mistake.
GET YOUR SHIRTS OFF FOR THE BOYS

no simply, we'll end up like the vodaphoen warriors, next sum1
(probably political) will suggest calling them the new zealand
phoenix, keep the name wellington at all costs

Ok maybe it was a poor idea. Apologies to all. Just trying to
support sponosors considering I have a Phillips flat screen and I'm
not looking at replacing my tv anytime soon and no-one puts money
into football.
As for the Red Bulls, they always were the Red Bulls, the sponsor came on later. Named similarly to the old Super 12 team the Blue Bulls

I thought they used to be the Metro Stars? And there was seriously
a team called the Blue Bulls?
that's hilarious. spam2007-11-24 23:40:16

Northern Transvaal Blue Bulls... Jaapies

They were the New York/ New Jersey Metrostars, nothing to do with Red Bull.
The LAST thing anyone should entertain is changing the club name to a sponsors name. It's alright in Johnny come lately sports like League and Basketball, but a sure way to disenfranchise supporters of football.

I wasn't saying to change the team name, just refer to them as the
Sony Phoenix. Anyway I think its overwhelmingly dead so you may as
well lock the post

from Wikipedia
From the 1998 season until right before the 2006 season, the team was known as simply the MetroStars. On March 9, 2006, it was sold to Red Bull, and the name changed to Red Bull New York. The sale of the team has been controversial among some fans of the MetroStars, not dissimilar to the situation in Austria, where Red Bull bought SV Austria Salzburg and renamed it FC Red Bull Salzburg.
