From day -50 our defence was shaky, no experience. Poor signings. We need a quality centre back in the transfer window. When Dodd was injured first half who wasn't praying. I mean.. Old?? We have no alternatives.
The game plan. First 15 mins, no attacks, pass the ball around square, noone goes forward. Ricki said we wanted to score first, well, hello! you have to actually attack to score. I see, its really wait for them to score to wake us up. Well it worked again, as usual.
Subs. No bloody subs used for any purpose. and we've a nearly full squad to choose from. Aren't any of them up to making an impact??
Dear oh dear. Ricki. sort it out.

Have to agree,
Obvious problems in game preperation and no decision making,
First time the crowd atmosphere turning less tha positive, obviously starting to get frustrated.
Two really basic amatuer mistakes for the goals, one off the frame a missed penalty.
BUT we still missed opportunities to put this one away.  The front men still seem panicky when they actually get  the rare quality ball in.
We are better than battling for last but it needs to come soon.

It needed to come today, since we have three away matches now.

Decisions with the subs confused me as well.

(Edit - I retract my earlier joke that beers should be emptied before throwing....they outright shouldn't be thrown at all. The cheap laugh I got from the joke pales compared to the seriousness of the situation - we're above that sort of behaviour and the last thing the Phoenix need is association with the sort of fans ultras groups are so vilified for. We're here to watch the football.)

I'd love to see Ricki play 4-4-2. Our skill is on offense and we do best when we keep the ball upfield. We need to compensate for our lax defence until we can sign some better D-men to complement Dodd and Lochhead.

Fun! Fun!
It was bang out of order. I saw a 7-year-old girl today follow the example from the Yellow Fever zone and biff a bottle.

Sure, chant, yell and gesticulate all you want but to condone throwing anything at the oppo means you've sunk to something less than what the Phoenix supporters stand for.

Grow up you muppet.

I was tempted when their goal keeper started holding up his fingers saying 2-1, but I restrained my self from throwing a bottle.

We're all tempted Harry but we're stronger when we resist.

Game over - happy to applaud CCM when they came off - responding to their acknowledging the YF - so I was saddened to see a bottle heading their way.
I'm just hoping this doesn't become an excuse for the stewards to get more active ....

I imagine it could also get us into strife with the league, and/or injure our own fans

bloody hell if you can't select from the vast range of words in the English language(supplemented by appropriate hand gestures) to express your views, perhaps you should take up watching rugby

throwing sh!t at the opposition is rubbish (seriously) - we have to do better than that. pull your head in whoever it was. if you'd broked someone's nose you'd be a right pr!ck.

mate,

Elrich ran his socks off and was Knackered. He still won't be match fit yet and he struggled for 15 mins before coming off. As for the bottle thrown, I have posted on that elsewhere.

Lets not see it again ay?

Just passing on what we do no offence intended, especially to RH as he an excellent coach

Lawie appointed from day Alex Tobin as our defence coach. Alex is the most capped Austrlian player by a long way. Further he is prehaps the best central back Australian ever produced and that includes Lucas Neil. We have lost one player to Germany after being selected to play for Socceroos, Michael Beautaum, currently two other backs in Neil Boogaard, Olyroos & Deen Heffernan Soccerros, none of these players had even state rep experience. Then we signed  Tony Vidmar a retired Socceroo defender.

I guess the Mariners put heaps of time with an excellent coach just for the defence, and it's paid huge dividends.  We also have a midfield and goal keeping coach.

As I said it's what we do no offence intended so good luch for the future

Socceroo/ Mariner / Whangarei

Frankly, I hope they nail the person who threw it. A stupid act that could have a roll on effect aginst the club the FFA are looking for anything to ping us and this idiot gave it to them!

I was pissed at our performance, at the dickhead lines man on the far side of the ground by the subs bench and when everyone came off I chanted "Who are ya" like everyone else. But it is best to refrain from the physical stuff. kids are impressionable and will pick up the habits.

Next to me i had a Dad and his young son. He didn't know the chants so I showed him my printed copy off here. i just told him not to bother with the rude words as he was about 7. i told him to make sure it's fun day and that at the end of the game to remember it's only a game. He sung his little heart out, didn't sing the rude words and had a good time. Even his Dad was pleased to learn what the chants were and why (You're not Watford anymore" was sung). Upon reflection I enjoyed today. I had an awesome sausage on bread at the backbencher, I met some new & friendly fellow fans, I had a nice seat in the sun and I got home to Upper Hutt by 7:30pm. Ok the result sucked and some of the football was a shocker but my total day experience was worth the dosh.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

Just shows you are a complete an utter t**ser.Firstly Elrich was stuffed and should have been subbed earlier.

As for the bottle throwing just plain FKN idiotic and i would hope that if any genuine YF member spotted who it was that they firmly put that person in their place.

WE DONT WANT FKN STUFF THROWN FROM THE YF ZONE its one sure way to get stewards watching us even more and even worse the "A" league hate that sort of sh*t.
So whoever you are FK off from the zone.

ive said it 4 a while.give someone else a run at right back.we cant blame christie 4 this result but we need an actual defender in this position.hes a midfielder.although we dnt have a luxury of great depth prehaps steven old or even vince lia to go back there and johnson to come in to the midfield. On second thought felipe should come bak in there.in terms of o'dor i think he still has the potential but he often looks nervous out there and should just be confident in himself.u cant be a centre half and not be confident about winning every ball that comes near you.interesting bench from ricky aswell.dunno if the coaching staff got it right on this ocassion

whats wrong with cleberson?we seemed to give up on him because he'd win the ball and punt it upfield but thats a sh*tload better than doing an average pass back for the other team to pounce on isnt it?! also go easy on the anti rugby comments!! i play rugby so i take offense to it,sorry if i sound like a fag!lol and this is about enjoying sport and getting behind wellington not bagging on rugby!!

Problem: Defensive frailties/incompetence at the back

Solution: BRING BACK OLD!
Permalink Permalink
over 18 years ago · edited over 13 years ago
Lets not bead round the bush here. O'Dor shouldnt be starting, he looked shaky last week and crapped out this week. He didnt learn from when Djite turned him inside out to score. Dodd is carrying him.  Bring in Clebo, cant do any worse than O'Dor. I know he had a sh*t game at right back, but that seems to be the selection criteria for becoming a CB at this club, i mean thats how O'dor got picked..

Lia is not a defender. Felipe was injured (or are you sayinghe should play right back which is an even worse call)
