Word on the street is that Jacob (not Jason) Spoonley was released by the club today.

Anyone confirm?

Hmmm, just asked Tony P but he said he couldn't confirm. Must be some truth to it as I heard it today too?

Shame really as he seemed like a good lad. Couldn't really see him getting any game time though.

My guess is that, if it's true, they've got someone lined up to announce and will do a combo announcement when they're ready.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Wrong, he wasnt released today. He was released last week. Also no truth to the rumour going around that he has signed for Wests (yet).

Not really suprising. He needs gametime and he aint going to get it if Paston is still here (he shouldn't be here either btw - also needs gametime)

it should be if people arent in the 16 man squad or however big it is that they play for team wellington or another club it would equal fitter players and morale boosting

The youth league allows 4 of them to get gametime.

FIFA transfer/ loan rules might preclude this for many players. Also the cnahce of injury would probably make it a risky business.

That said though it is important for fringe players to get access to game time. . . although in the absence of a reserve grade I don't see how this is possible.

Could they be in talks about him being soley a youth league player?
Permalink Permalink

Any chance of him trying for a club overseas?

By all accounts this young boy has the goods, he looked very impressive at the under 20 world cup and apparently his form in the Olympic Qualifiers was equally as impressive.

would have been wiser to let Paston go (if this is true)

Pretty sure he is now to old to be a Youth player in the 23, let alone a youth squad member who has to be younger.

Jacob Spoonley. Position: Goalkeeper. Date of Birth: 03-03-1987

So he has just turned 21

I suspect you have to be Under-20 on January 1st... the positions are officially 'Under-20'.

Makes perfect sense then. Last season he would have counted as one of the 3 U20 players but now doesn't. So we need to sign another U20 and if we keep Spoonley as well that gives us 1 less squad place when we're still trying to sign 2-3 more players.

Plus, since we no longer need to cover for the AW's when they are away for internationals we don't need 3 keepers.

Age 16 21 (must be 16 on 1 January in year the Youth League commences), maximum age is 21; must be no older than 20 on 1 January in the year Youth League commences

So f we were able to get a youth league team this year he would be able to make it in

Not that I doubt the source of all true information that is Wiki  after a brief search I found the same details on the FFA website:

"Age 16 21 (must be 16 on 1 January in year the Youth League commences), maximum age is 21; must be no older than 20 on 1 January in the year Youth League commences"

YOUNG Wellington Phoenix goalkeeper Jacob Spoonley has been released from his contract to allow him to pursue regular playing opportunities.

Spoonley, 21, signed a two-year deal with the Phoenix in July last year on the back of a stellar performance for the New Zealand under-20 side at the 2007 World Cup in Toronto.

However, with first-choice Phoenix keeper Glen Moss and All Whites No 1 Mark Paston in the Wellington squad, Spoonley had only limited opportunities to prove himself during the teams inaugural season in the Hyundai A-League.

Phoenix chief executive Tony Pignata said the decision to release Spoonley with one year left on his contract had been a tough one, but was made with Spoonleys best interests in mind.

Jacobs a great young talent but he needs to play and the club is very conscious of that.

Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert also had big raps on the young shot-stopper.

From a personal point of view and from a national team coaching point of view, I think Jacob has a fantastic future ahead of him and playing regularly will allow him to develop his game and further enhance his prospects at international level.

The club was working on Spoonleys behalf to secure an overseas playing opportunity for him.

Jacobs future could well be at the Wellington Phoenix in two or three years time and thats something wed love to see happen, Herbert said. But right now hes got to be playing its as simple as that.

Weve considered all the options and we feel that playing overseas would be best for him at this stage.

Spoonleys season with the Phoenix had helped to significantly improve the young keepers abilities, Herbert said.

For any young player its a valuable experience to be involved at a professional club and Jacob has certainly grown as a player during his 12 months with the Phoenix. That significant development has certainly been borne out by his performances with the current New Zealand Olympic team.

He filled as emergency cover for the AW's matches last season.

If we sign a third keeper it will be another youngster... unless Paston goes.

I think we'd have been better keeping Spoonley and dumping Paston - In my opinion an over-rated keeper. Spoonley would have been cheaper and a more long term prospect.

Surely better to have a guy with experince on the bench and a guy needing experince to be at another club (hopefully overseas) getting playing time.
Ins't that also why Costa could be loaded to a VPL team for a few months to get some games under his belt. Young guys dont need to be sitting on the bench, they need to be getting game time somewhere.

Have a look at the A-league website guys, how stupid it is to have Mossy's picture on there?  They've got the wrong picture!  They don't even know our No. 1 GK!!!

In my opinion we should get rid of Paston and Spoonley.  Spoonley is too old to be considered a youth, and it would be good to have a young kiwi goalkeeper taking up one of our youth spots, while Paston is an All White and he is far too good to be a bench-warmer.  He needs to keep in good form - something that can't be done on the bench.

Another good decision by Tony and Ricki.

If Spoonley is to develop in to a future starting keeper for the Nix he needs regular game time - the caveats are the game time needs to be at a good level, in a professional environment with very good specialist goal keeping coaching.

The other consideration is I can't see why we need 3 keepers - better to free up a squad place for another back or striker. God forbid anything happens to Moss but, if it did, I assume we could sign another keeper on as temporary injury cover for Paston.
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

Did you watch the back end of the Knights last season? Paston was absolutely immense - equal to or better than Moss was for us. Not over rated at all. You can't say he's crap based on that one game he played for us.
