What has Steven Old ever done?

He made then NZ U/17 as Paul Smalley's little prodigy and was named captain, the team didnt make it past the Oceania qualifers!

Was an average player at Manawatu and that comes directly from players who played with him, then Ricki talked Newcastle into signing him where he was terrible and hardly played!

This guy is rubbish and its a joke the Phoneix have signed him. Look at who else you could have signed:

1. Ben Sigmund
2. Johnathon Perry
3. Ricki Van Steeden
4. Greg Uhlman
5. Adam Birch
6. Matt Adams
7. Dan Terris
8. Danny Hay

I watched Kerryn Jordan make him look like an idiot, it was hilarious.....

Ricki lives or dies by his selections.  He's made the decision that Old has the potential to be an A-League defender and time will prove if he's right or wrong.

Laying in to him before he has played a match for the club is pretty rubbish TBH... and you can keep some of that list thanks.

My judgements have been made on his performaces for:

1. Manawatu-Poor
2. Newcastle- harldy played he was that bad
3. All Whites- Absolute liability

If you have half a football brain, he would be at the bottom of that list. hes not half the player Perry is, but hey its all about young talent.

Old is a player who has be given everything, he hasnt earnt a dam thing!

Send him back to the NZFC to earn his contract.

I didnt know the Phoneix were a charity

star21,

I can understand your prejudice as he certainly hasn't been proven, but why don't you actually suggest some decent  players?

My 2 cents worth below, comments in Red (not good), Green (neutral) and Blue (good) - only one of them would be worth signing ahead of Old, and some of the others must be your mates or something as the suggestion of them is illogical...

Good potential and definitely worth a look
2. Johnathon Perry
Ha! You're having a laugh - he has already proved he isn't A-League standard
3. Ricki Van Steeden
Kicky van Studs-in - one of the biggest donkey journeymen around whi will get 5 red cards a season
4. Greg Uhlman
You're taking the piss here I presume?
5. Adam Birch
Haven't seen enough of him to comment fairly
6. Matt Adams
I would be surprised if he could cut it in the A-League - I'd put him on a par with Old
7. Dan Terris
Haven't seen enough of him to comment fairly
8. Danny Hay
The team already has enough Chiefs - he is too disruptive and is looking like his legs won't go another full season

Personally I think JP was much maligned.  He was a good player for the Kingz, but age is probably getting beyond him now.

So what are you actually suggesting?  Like it or not the guy has signed, will be playing this year, and is a professional footballer.  Personally I'd much rather have a young guy with the potential to improve but thats my opinion...at the end of the day what does sl*gging him off like this (1) prove or (2) achieve?  What is your point?

ah, keyboard warriors... maybe we should run a poll and see if we should set a policy that if you want to lay in to someone publically you should have the balls to use your own name, not a pseudonym ?

...or at least own up to your pseudonym

sigmund - i reckon he'd go great guns

perry - liked him with the kingz and stood out for auckland at the world club champs

van steeden - i like him too; not as good as perry and sigmund, but a good old fashioned hard b@stard

uhlmann - nice pick, very under rated.  might get a regular run for auckland now that perry has retired

birch - not sure about this one

adams - ditto, but very good at nzfc level

terris - good solid player

hay - agree with cnut

old - still in the promising phase.  i agree he has had it quite easy, and nzf have spent a lot of money on him going to parma and all and he has yet to really perform, but let's see how he goes

Firstly, I don't think Old is there to start lineup. More as a reserve, banch player (wait until braasil boys arrive).

Secondly, He's still young enough to be given a look in.

I'm no Old fan, and have even taken the time to bag the guy on the odd occaision, but I think the criticism in this thread was a bit OTT.

Not alot of love in this thread..... Last year was only his first year of professional football so I'm sure he was on a steep learning curve.... in terms of not achieving anything he had a pretty good college career in the states at a good school.... so I think give him time and he will develop into a good a league defender, i mean how many defenders are in their prime when they are 21

Sigmund is the only good player on the list.  For his sake I hope he gets picked up by a different A league franchise.  I know it would be great to see him with the WP but he has been stuffed around for years by Herbert and NZF.  They only became intrested when they realised he was off to Aus to try and make a go of things.  Perry to Old.  Van Steeden To old and Sh&t.  Uhlman to old and slow.  Birtch to old and slow.  Adams good player but not good enough.  Terris same as adams.  Hay.......I won't go there. I'm happy with Old as a signing Will be keen to learn and already knows what standard the A league is.  If any of the players in the list are able to step up I'm sure it will be him (except for my boyfriend Benny)

I haven't seen too much of Old but he looked pretty hapless when playing for the all whites, but the Phoenix signed him as a reserve and he is young, so I think he deserves a chance and if he isn't up to A league standard by the end of the season release him.

Old was also on the boos at Parma in Italy for a couple of years - give him a chance - also he didn't look great for the AllWhites in South America but then he was plaing ion a back 3 with Bunce and Hay and they're slower than me.

I don't think this is a bashing thread against Old, it is purely just "facts and figures" most of us saw Newcastle play a couple of times last season and the All Whites South American tour.
I hope he proves us wrong but going by past performances I cannot see him getting on the pitch very often.

But what are you suggesting Phoenix management do, release him?  I just don't see the point in starting a thread saying that one of our plyers, who none of us have even seen play for us, is rubbish.  I just don't understand that mentality...

Who are you criticising star21, Old or Herbert?  Do you really think Herbert has no idea?

Give old a go.

Personally I think one of the reasons he looked so bad for the all whites was the fact he had Hay and Bunce next to him, the quick South American strikers ran all day and those two watch going...ohhh that looked good.

At the castle he got injured remember whch cut down his time aswell.

Old needs towork on his distribution, but that can come, in the air he is excellent and he does read the game reasonably well, just needs to be quicker to react.

Has the potential.

Hay WAS great and Perry wasnt too shabby in his day, but dude, wake up...im thinking Kingzfan is onto something with Old and the angry chap's sister

Its good to see that most replies have been posative of Old in this forum so far. Star 21 you're speaking some absolute smack here!

Firstly when Steve was first selected for the all whites he made his debut as a late replacement aginst Aus at centre back in a 1-0 loss. May i add that he did not play in the crucial game against Vanuatu in a game that led to the all whites not making it past the oceania qualifiers. Ryan Nelson was playing center back in that game an we all know how good a player he is so would you not sign him or any of the other all whites who havnt made it past oceania qualifiers? You would lose half the squad mate!

Secondly i dont think you can report it as a fact that Oldie was average at Manawatu. Collin Tua surely rated him there and if you talked to most of the players there i think they would tell you he was pretty handy even though he was only 16 and 17 at the time!

Yep, totally agree. he is no dud (yet). let him get on the park and show what he can do. New team, new players, new management. Why rip into him when he's hardly kicked a ball for us? And I don't think Ricki had to convince any other teams to sign him either. this thread as started by star21 is way over the top!

I fully agree with star21.

I know nothing about football but if Steven Old can be a professional footballer then I may as well be a suga daddy at the caketins local asian brothel.

Old is useless.

Star 21 I think your also forgetting that Old is a sizeable young lad with years ahead of him as a professional footballer! Sure he may have scored your sister but thats no reason to hold a grudge! when Oldie scores the winning goal for the phoenix in the grand final he will be an even greater new zealand hero than he allready is!

Old only spent a week or two trialing at parma and didnt make the youth side. Some of you guys need to stop rating players on which club they play for or country they are from.

I've said this somewhere on here before, but to me Old's career has suffered a bit due to the weight of expectation.

He was "the next big thing", made captain of the under 20s (I think) at age 17, rushed into the AWs straight after that and it's no wonder that he has stalled a bit. He's certainly got the raw material to be an excellent player over the next decade or so.

He's a good signing by a good coach who himself played in the exact same position.

what a load of crap - the guys got the goods, just needs a couple of good wins to build his confidence and some support around him. Are you people forgetting the Brazil game, played out of his skin against the best attack in the world, when his captain and other CB went off injured. Now his second season of pro football - he will grow and this silly page will be laughed about
