The new Wellington Phoenix football franchise have scored their first win on Australian soil.

Goals from Shane Smeltz and the Brazilian midfielder Daniel enabled the Phoenix to beat the Melbourne Victory 2-1 in a Pre-season Cup competition match at Olympic Park in Melbourne last night.

The only goal for the Victory came from an own goal by the Phoenix's Karl Dodd.

The result gives the Phoenix third place of the four teams in Group B of the pre-season tournament.
