STRONG interest in Wellington Phoenix FCs first warmup hitout in the capital has resulted in the club switching Sundays 2007 Pre-Season Cup clash against Sydney FC from Newtown Park to Westpac Stadium.

Wellington Phoenix FC, after discussions with the Wellington City Council, decided to move Sundays match to Westpac Stadium due to concerns that Newtown Park would not have the capacity to cope with the big crowd expected.

Wellington Phoenix FC chief executive Tony Pignata said switching Sundays game against Sydney FC to Westpac Stadium was the best solution.

Newtown Park only has the capacity for about 3000 people and we decided we needed facilities to cater for what we expect will be a big turnout.

Sundays match against Sydney FC is Wellington Phoenixs second match in the 2007 Pre-Season Cup, the warmup competition to the Hyundai A-League 2007/08 season.

Kickoff is set for 2pm and the gates at Westpac Stadium will be open from 1pm. Entry to Sundays match costs $10 for adults, while children (16 and under) will get free entry. All tickets presold for Sundays match will be accepted at Westpac Stadium on match day.

It's an encouraging sign if they think that Newtown Park wont be able to cope with the amount of people expected to turn up to the game, because that suggests a large crowd.

I really hope that Wellington people turn out for this match.  As an Auckland supporter it was so disappointing going to matches with such a small crowd.  It seems like the management of the Phoenix have stayed away from the bad habits of the Knights, it appears the recruitment of players is totally different from the Knights so please Wellington turn out in big numbers and send the message that NZ does love it's team in the A League.

Do have to keep it in perspective though, it is only a pre-season game and the switch to the stadium was made at late notice.  I mean the Mariners only got 8000 on the weekend and they let everyone in for free.   8000 would be pretty good I think

so are students with ID still free? It doesn't seem to mention tertiary prices in the article.

Yet to confirm but changing the conditions now would be a bit of a disaster so I suspect it will be the same

Why do you need a discount? You'll be sh*t faced after only one pint anyway.

I stand to be correctd but I think the NPC game is scheduled for Porirua Park so Westpac will be untouched.

great news - I was going to post up about getting directions to Newtown Park - now it's arrive by train and head for the ground via the pub

Gate 22 is the one to ask for?

I'd imagine all tickets will be general admission and once you're inside the ground you can get to any seat at all - so just head for Aisle 21/22 - very easy to find!liverpoolfan12007-07-17 19:49:28

actually at the stadium, I tend to go for the mini bottles of red wine.  Not sure what I'll do on Sunday now.

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight
