Your correct with you statement. (phew). Law 12 states "a player is sent off if he prevents a goal or an obvious goal scoring opportunity by deliberately handling the ball".
It doesn't matter what player it is. He obviously stopped a goal scoring opportunity. I don�t think it was deliberately however. Think he just got fooled by the skid of the bounce and it happened to hit his hand.
But how many free kicks for handball are given because it is a deliberate action. Most are for the player gaining an advantage from accident using his hand.
Probability a bit harsh if you go exactly by the book. I have been sent off for a similar offense. Wet conditions, and slipping outside of the box while already holding the ball.
